RUSH TO DUB: IT'S GUT CHECK TIME ( Stand up for free speech. Veto this bill Mr. President)
rushlimbaugh ^ | 2/15/2002 | Rush Limbaugh

Today, ladies and gentlemen, you cannot shout "Freedom!" in a crowded election. That's what this phony campaign finance reform bill will mean if it becomes law, which is why there is a huge debate going on inside the Bush White House over whether the president should veto or sign the bill. It appears right now the president is going to sign the thing - and this is what's troubling.

Mr. President, remember the brilliant address you made to the nation explaining our course of action in fighting world terrorism? I say the same kind of approach is called for with this deceptively named campaign finance reform bill. You enjoy an amazing level of trust with the American people. They trust you. They believe in your honesty and integrity. You could explain to them just why this bill is unconstitutional, and why it ought not ever see the light of day. The First Amendment has just been amended here in wanton violation of the Constitution.

Folks, when John McCain was running for president in the Republican primary, I said, "If Russia passed a new law that restricted free speech and competitive elections in the way that the McCain-Feingold bill does, and then claimed it was reform, our state department and human rights groups would denounce it as repression of the Russian people. The New York Times and Washington Post editorial pages would rail against these efforts as anti-Democratic - which they are." This bill is un-American, wrong and against freedom, and I say this knowing that it would make me even more powerful than I am now. Think about that.

President Bush has demonstrated that he has the resolve and the courage and the principle to face down the evil of terrorism. He's shown that he is committed to doing what's right regardless of what the European Union, congressional Democrats or even the media has to say about it. He's doing the right thing. He's following his instincts. Well, let me suggest that this assault on the Bill of Rights requires no less resolve and courage by the president to prevent a severe blow to our liberty.

To me, this is gut-check time, Mr. President. One of the major reasons you were supported over McCain back in the primary season in the year 2000 was your stand against this very bill. Stand up for free speech. Veto this bill.

Rush's position has been that it took libs 50 years , by incrementalism, to get to this point and that we cannot overturn 50 years of government 'largesse" in one fell swoop without alarming people who have come to depend on various programs.

The bill is a bad bill, an UNCONSTITUTIONAL bill, it won't work, and it will weaken the party's while strenghening outside interest groups.

However, I am for its passage.

Seek help. You are in serious need.

>>>when the President vetoes this monstrousity if it ever gets to his desk...

Sure is taking him (Bush) a long time to verbalize his thoughts on this subject. You don't suppose he's got his finger in the wind. Nah. A pubbie would never do such a thing.

Although I am against the CFR as written since I believe that it is unconstitutional (I favor no caps, no restrictions, and full disclosure)GW should not veto it.

So he should just sign any and all un-Constitutional legislation that reaches his desk?

I'm curious about how the Bush-Bots are going to handle this issue now that Rush has chimed in. Some of these people should be giving lessons in "creative tapdancing".

Actually the reading of the bill makes it absolutely impossible to enforce and doesn't seem to be something that will change anything. It's a perception and nothing more. By Rush going beserk about it the bill has gotten more attention than it deserves. I don't find anything in the bill that cannot be gotten around to our advantage. In other words, IMHO, nothing will change at all.

Too bad Rush chose this silly bill to get hysterical about....better if he had actually gone over it line by line and shown everyone the utter foolishness of the entire proposal.

From his big-government, deficit-spending budget to his socialized education bills, he's losing credibility.

Why do you think I call him "Bubba Bush"?

. None of us know the context that quote was taken.

It was a question asked at a press conference, and Bubba Bush was obviously joking and going for laughs. He got them and smiled.

I hope GWB vetoes this bill, but you're absolutely right about the "creative tapdancing." Even if he has a huge celebration to sign the bill, he will lose very few of his supporters. And he will definitely not lose Rush Limbaugh.

Apparently you don't believe in faith healing. I believe faith healing is very real but I don't think it has anything to do with Pat Robertson or any other religious leader, I simply believe that if you really believe in faith healing it will work for you. The longer I live the more I believe that it is our thoughts and the resulting emotions that determine our health or lack of health to a very large degree.

I'm shocked at how many FReepers were defending him on this issue last week.

The "Clintnoids" have nothing on the "Bush-Bots".

I've already called the White House, emailed my Congressman (who voted AGAINST it) and my two Senators. I also emailed my Congressman to thank him for voting against Shays-Meehan. However, I decided it wouldn't hurt to also mail the White House:

Dear Mr. President,

Please veto McCain-Feingold or Shays-Meehan campaign finance reform bills. They are unconstitutional, do not prohibit unions from advertising, but do businesses, does not address donations by foreign entities (i.e. China), and restricts our First Amendment to speak out against elected officials. What this does is unfairly protect incumbants.

Relying on the Supreme Court to determine bits and pieces of these bills is unconstitutional is unwise. Please veto McCain-Feingold or Shays-Meehan.
