Already 51% of people in San Francisco agree that davis is probably a crook.

There will be hard-fast proof later this morning. Believe it because ElkGroveDan said so on FreeRepublic.

I will update on FR after COPS holds their press conference and shows the incontravertible proof.

Los Angeles -- Republican Bill Simon charged Monday that Gov. Gray Davis had illegally accepted a campaign contribution in his state office from a law enforcement group -- an explosive accusation immediately rebutted by the former law enforcement official who supposedly handed over the check.

"I've never been in (Davis') office in my life," said Al Angele, the former executive director of the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs. He called the accusation "out of left field . . . totally unbelievable."

The matter erupted after Monday's debate in Los Angeles between the Democratic governor and Simon, his Republican challenger. Simon asked Davis during the matchup whether he had ever accepted campaign contributions in his state offices, which would be illegal. Davis said he had always acted within the law.

Pressed later by reporters about whether he had evidence that Davis had acted illegally, Simon said he did.

The Simon campaign produced a letter written by the Sacramento law firm that represents the state Republican Party. The letter to the Fair Political Practices Commission came from the current leaders of the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs, who have publicly disagreed with Davis. It said they were concerned that Angele might have violated the law "by delivering a $10,000 contribution check to Gov. Gray Davis in the state capital" on Jan. 31, 1998.

The FPPC, which is charged with ensuring that politicians follow state campaign laws, said it would investigate.

Garry South, Davis' senior campaign adviser, called the charges by Simon "an act of desperation" from a candidate headed for a loss on election day. South also said the current directors of COPS -- who have endorsed Simon for governor and accepted a $100,000 contribution from him for their slate card -- had falsely made the charges out of partisan interest.

The COPS letter to the FPPC charged that South had been present when Angele delivered the allegedly illegal check.

South and Angele angrily denied on Monday that such a meeting had taken place at the Capitol.

On the date in question, South said, Davis met with Angele and other COPS leaders in Davis' Los Angeles campaign office, where the future governor legally accepted a contribution.

Angele, a Davis supporter, headed the COPS organization for nearly two decades but last year had a falling out with those who have since taken over the group, South said.

By late Monday, Simon campaign spokesman Mark Miner said only, "We stand by the letter."

The COPS group has supported Davis for years, but this summer endorsed Simon. COPS officials said allegations that Davis doles out political favors based on campaign contributions led to the defection.

I tried to vote (FReep), but couldn't find the buttons ... I did see the results, and it looks like a huge majority of people know Davis is a crook!

We watched the Simon Davis debate and I don't think Davis did too well. He really started to lose it and whined after Simon's answer to a question denegrating Davis " That's not true, I".........and the moderator cut him off.
He looked guilty of his malfeasance in office and sounded weak.

Done. Still the best thing about Simon is that he's not Davis.
