Should Democrats mobilize progressives or persuade Obama-Trump voters?
The Star-Tribune ^ | September 21, 2019 | J. Patrick Coolican

Democrats are having a wonkish but important debate right now as they pick their next standard-bearer:

Should they try to persuade voters who supported President Barack Obama for two terms and then left them in 2016?

Or should they mobilize the tens of millions of Americans who stayed home in 2016 and would seem to have a natural home in the Democratic Party in 2020, including people of color and single women?

The debate tends to track along ideological lines. Progressives pushing socialized medical insurance are ready to forgo any attempt to win back Trump voters. Doing so allows them to claim that there's no electoral advantage to moderation. They think a robust progressive agenda will bring out Democrats who stayed home in 2016.

Moderates believe their policies can win back these Obama-Trump voters, who are usually whites without college degrees — many of them in the crucial "blue wall" states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, but let's also throw in Minnesota.

I doubt there is anything a democrat can offer middle class America. What have they got? A return to companies fleeing overseas? The return to no jobs for the middle class?

Democrats need more than, “Orange Man Bad.”

"including people of color and single women?"

President Trump's policies have created record employment for people of color and single women. Is this something people of color or single women oppose? If they stay with the Democrat Party, will the Democrat Party continue with the policies that have been demonstrably helpful to people of color and single women? If so, have the Democrats articulated that yet?

Exactly. People of color and single women are beneficiaries of President Trump’s economic policies. All the Democrats can do at this point is promise people of color and single women that this will stop when Democrats get back in power.

Democrats are having a wonkish but important debate...

There are NO intellectuals on the democrat side ... there's just pretentious assh*les, the loser children of 'elites', and idiots who bought into liberal 'group-think' while in college... born on third - think they hit a triple types...

So no, the word 'wonkish' doesn't fit ...

The latter is an impossibility given their actions in the wake of the 2016 elections and the collapse of the Mueller fiasco.

They will go hard left and try to gin up intimidating riots.

Policy wonks can be the most myopic political observers on the planet. No demographic is theirs by right, and it isn't false class consciousness that makes its members stray from progressive assumptions - the assumption that white working class people "should" vote Dem because, by golly, the Dems are the party of the working class, is only an assumption and was patently false in '16. The answer to this is not to blame the white working class for being ill-educated, but to dump the assumption, which your true, narrative-bound proggie has not done and is incapable of doing.

Still, radicalism is passion, and passion gets out the vote, and hatred is a powerful passion. That is why radicalizing the voters is so important: such voters are more easily manipulated. That this approach shows profound contempt toward those voters on the part of people who consider them their intellectual and moral superiors doesn't appear to register with the proggies, but it does with the voters, and that part means a rejection of the Political Correctness that is intended to keep those voters from straying. PC is, in fact, brute force, and that is becoming clearer by the day. I wouldn't expect a sudden swing toward moderation from anyone in the current Democrat party for this reason. Too risky.

If they’re asking this so late in the process, they’re in trouble.

You want to have this kind of thing ironed out before the primaries.

BTW, I dare anyone to picture the four of these women naked :)

One positive side effect of the good jobs economy is that more people have good health care through work.

Demoncrats are only promising to take that away. Are they selling anything ordinary Americans want?!

The title alone made me think of a story told from many pulpits of a challenge between God and Satan.

Satan declared he could make man better than God so God accepted the challenge with;

"Get your own dirt"

The democrats are in an impossible position and really have no idea how to get out of it.

Jerry Nadler is the perfect thermometer.

Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome.

Democrats should set an example and do all they can to save the Earth, reducing the harmful human population, by jumping off of cliffs or into volcanoes. I think only selfless acts like that will appease Gaia and inspire conservatives to appreciate democrats.

What’s the difference between “People of Color” and “Colored People”. What if we call them “Colorful People”?

Obama-Trump voters? Uh, not to help them out, but they should probably concentrate on voters who exist.
