Ok, I know that I am extremely late to the party...but I have to admit it...I have become a hardened fan of (bite lip and hope for the best) - "The Simpsons". I had never watched on a regular basis for the majority of the time that they had been on the air. Then I interviewed the author of "The Gospel According to the Simpsons" last year. The interview was ok as interviews go but in the author's telling of HOW the episode is put together each week fascinated me. Each epsiode take possibly up to 3 years to put together. Most episodes utilize more than 100 writers and the writing pool is equally divided up: 1/3 Jewish, 1/3 Christian, and 1/3 fill in the blank. The Simpsons, unlike many other TV families do seem to have a profound ability to endure the hardships of life and even underscore some of the most decent of human virtues and values. All that being said, it got me thinking, watching, and now I'm hooked...

I always thought it was kind of sympathetic towards Christianity -- although I haven't watched it that much recently.

I love the Simpsons and I would have to put them into the Conservative column. Except for that brat Lisa...
Lisa is simply the one who would have no heart if not a liberal when she is under 20...

Maude's voice quit so they either killed her or changed her voice. I think the episode she died is one of the best.

A few years ago David Horowitz published a new political spectrum on one of his websites (can't remember where now). It pointed out far right, far left, liberal conservative etc for things like magazines, politicians and so on so that there would be a better appreciation for who and what is where on the political spectrum.
One of the things they did was take characters from the Simpsons and put them on this chart. So that Far Left=Homer's mom, Liberal=Lisa, Moderate=Marge, Conservative=Homer, Far Right=Monty Burns.

Quimby is much more corrupt than JFK. And I could just picture him with a cervical collar around his neck while testifying before the grand jury....

Yes, he is more corrupt. But his voice, and lust for women is JFK, ballot box stuffing, and his wife is Jackie. Pill box hat and all.

Ahh! The Family Guy that is a parody of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is on Cartoon Network now. This show is an almost perfect parody. Love it!

my two cents..the Simpsons are one of the funniest shows to ever air..they have shown some incredible depth concerning religion..during the early 90's Homer decided that he did not want to go to church and just lounge around the house..and the episode showed that it was wrong..and in the end..his house caught on fire and that he was saved by an all volunteer fire squad consisting of a Christian(Flanders), a Jew (Krusty)..and others (Apu..Hindu)..and this is pointed out to him by his minister..something you don't see on prime time tv..however..they did slip a bit when pathetically the flanders were made the guardians of the Simpson kids and found out that they were not baptized..I know there are different producers..but that did not reconcile with the earlier episodes...

I always thought it was kind of sympathetic towards Christianity The Simpsons, like South Park and King of the Hill, are smart enough to make fun of everything, while at the same time treating their subjects with some respect.
For example, even when they satirize some of the easier targets in organized religion or worship, they also have taken care to have scenes where Ned's religion is shown as noble and uplifting (even to Homer at times).

I'm sure most of the writers are liberals and the show is more representative of liberalism than conservatism. But it certainly isn't dogmatic. At the end of the day there's no message that the show consistently delivers that most of us here would find particularly offensive. In fact the show is very pro-family at it's heart, even if it's in a way that most culture warriors would probably find unsatisfying.

Big Simpsons fan here.

"A is for A." Which is funny only if you've read your Ayn Rand. Yep....I busted a gut ovet that one.
Very clever.
