DoD Statement on News Reports of al-Qaida and Iraq Connections

DoD Statement on News Reports of al-Qaida and Iraq Connections News reports that the Defense Department recently confirmed new information with respect to contacts between al-Qaida and Iraq in a letter to the Senate Intelligence Committee are inaccurate.

A letter was sent to the Senate Intelligence Committee on October 27, 2003 from Douglas J. Feith, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, in response to follow-up questions from his July 10 testimony. One of the questions posed by the committee asked the Department to provide the reports from the Intelligence Community to which he referred in his testimony before the Committee. These reports dealt with the relationship between Iraq and al-Qaida.

The letter to the committee included a classified annex containing a list and description of the requested reports, so that the Committee could obtain the reports from the relevant members of the Intelligence Community.

The items listed in the classified annex were either raw reports or products of the CIA, the NSA, or, in one case, the DIA. The provision of the classified annex to the Intelligence Committee was cleared by other agencies and done with the permission of the Intelligence Community. The selection of the documents was made by DOD to respond to the Committee’s question. The classified annex was not an analysis of the substantive issue of the relationship between Iraq and al Qaida, and it drew no conclusions.

Individuals who leak or purport to leak classified information are doing serious harm to national security; such activity is deplorable and may be illegal.

Only Lieberman, Gephardt and Edwards have not used the Dean, Kerry, Kucinich, Graham and Sharpton standard line that "Bush Lied"

News reports that the Defense Department recently confirmed new information with respect to contacts between al-Qaida and Iraq in a letter to the Senate Intelligence Committee are inaccurate.

This is the part that has me confused. They say that the news that DoD confirmed new information are in inaccurate.

I'm not sure if they're denying that they SAID, "Yep, the new information is true."

Or if they're denying that the information is true.

What do you think?

Here is all I could find so far:

The first-term senator defended his congressional vote in favor of the war in Iraq, citing Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's potential for obtaining weapons of mass destruction. Hussein posed a "direct threat to the security of the American people and a direct threat to a region of the world that is increasingly dangerous," Edwards stated. "I stand behind my support of the war."

I think you got him. Too bad the media is mum on it. I think that's good, because I want Dean to more than lose. I want him humiliated.

The DOD is saying that the information is not new and they haven't gotten any further evidence to back up the claims.

All they are saying is that the memo is a summary of what they use to back up their statements about Saddam Hussein and his ties to terrorism.

It's new to us (although I've heard of most of this stuff) not new to the intelligence community.

Make sense?

I think they're saying "Whoever leaked the unclassified letter is in big trouble if they leak the classified annex!"

There is one honorable and moderate Dem member of the Committee--Evan Bayh.I don't think he leaked it. It is all together possible some staffer did, however...Remember staffers often serve for years and Dems weren't always this stupid or perfidious.

Evan Bayh does seem to be a good man, Zell Miller likes him, that's says something about him. Although I disagree with Bayh's policies, especially his faith in the U.N.

But he does seem honorable

Could be the Bush administration ferreting out the real leakers. I can't believe they would give our Senators real live ammo in classified information.

Just because we just found out, by way of a memo, about the senate intelligence shenanigans doesn't mean that President Bush has been in the dark about the goings on.

Thanks for the ping.

It might be time for President Bush to do a few "fireside chats" so to speak. It worked for Roosevelt. The public still need President Bush's reassurances that he's at the helm and in control.

Fireside Chats Of Franklin D. Roosevelt..."Announcing Unlimited National Emergency "

Hitler and other dictators might be dead but the same murderous spirit still lives in our terrorists today.

Has anyone compiled the various articles we've had posted about the links and cooperation between Saddam Hussein's regime and Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups?
