In 2002, I was laid off and it took eight months to find another job. My contract expired at the end of December, and since then I've had seven serious job prospects, and have had five interviews with three companies this week. The IT job market is doing a lot better now.

Well, I am definitely looking in to changing my career from unemployed/underemployed/permatemp IT worker to fitness trainer. All the IT work is being outsourced to India, while the number of obese Americans continues to skyrocket.

Poor Democrats loose their talking point "Only 1 thousand jobs created in December"
Ten bucks says they still use it.

Anecdotal evidence: I live in Southeastern Michigan, where employment is heavily industrial due to the auto industry. One of my friends lost his job working for an auto supplier and found a new job in less than four weeks working for another supplier. This is in an area where the local unemployment rate is greater than 10%.
Further anecdotal evidence: I met with a new customer yesterday who is one of the largest, if not the largest, manufacturer of industrial robots in the U.S. They told me that January, which is normally a very slow month for them, was one of the busiest Januaries they've had in their history. This tells me that factories are receiving orders for goods and they are either adding robots to meet production or they are upgrading to new robots for increased productivity. I see this as a sign of greater economic activity that will be reflected in upcoming months.
Finally, on one of my favorite business shows - CNBC's Kudlow & Kramer - Jim Kramer, an unabashed Democrat (but also a capitalist), recently declared that in an economic recovery from recession, historically, jobs are added to the economy one year after interest rates reach their lowest level. Kramer said interest rates reached their lowest level in March 2003 so the economy should start adding jobs at a greater pace in March 2004. It looks like we're on our way there. This does not bode well for the Rats in the upcoming election.

It's like the dems have absolutely no idea just how amazing a 5.6% unemployment rate is for a Western nation. Perhaps they should check out European economies that have nearly double the rates, and a lot more protection for workers. (As if protections somehow guarantee employment...)

Have you noticed that the leftist media has completely ignored results from the HOUSEHOLD SURVEY -- a survey which notes that an ADDITIONAL 496,000 new jobs were created last month! If you add the 112,000 new jobs noted in the BUSINESS SURVEY to the 496,000 jobs noted by the HOUSEHOLD SURVEY you actually have a net increase of 608,000 new jobs during the month of January! Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!
Excerpt:
Some economists think hiring really is occurring in the economy, but it is not being reflected in the Labor Department's monthly survey of business payrolls. In the separate survey of households, employment jumped by 496,000 last month.
The household survey counts self-employed workers and contract workers, which are increasing. The survey of businesses does not.
"They're not recording the outside contractors they're not reflecting something that is tremendously fundamental now to the American corporate scene, and that's outsourcing to outside contractors," Mayland said.
The Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics acknowledged the continuing discrepancies, and said it is investigating.

If the New England Patriots were Republicans, the Reuters/Associated Press story of the Superbowl would look like this:
The heavily favored New England Patriots, disappointing their own fans, and football fans in general, squeaked out a 3 point victory over a very weak opponent. The prospects for the career of beleaguered coach Bill Belichick were certainly not enhanced by the team's unexpectedly weak showing. Experts nationwide had expected the Pats to win by at least seven points, and to hold their opponents to well under the 29 points they eventually scored. Placekicker Adam Vinatieri missed two relatively easy field goal attempts early in the game, which will certainly be devastating to his career, although he did manage to barely clear the uprights late in the game, as the Pat's drive was bogged down in a quagmire, and they settled for a 3-pointer. Quarterback Tom Brady threw a key interception late in the game, but, despite his struggles, was named MVP by a panel that was probably distracted by seeing the bare right breast of pop star Janet Jackson.

Here's something that I missed, buried in the MSNBC story:
"Still, Januarys hiring gains marked the fifth straight month of increases, and followed a revised 16,000 new jobs added in December, better than the 1,000 initially reported."
What's that? Last month's 1000 job claim was false? I think I predicted this way back.

U.S. Adds Fewer New Jobs Than Expected; Jobless Rate Falls

The American economy added 112,000 jobs in January while the unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in two years.
