someone can point out a distinction that I'm missing . . .

A ringing church bell at "worst" might invite someone to a Christian church service. Mostly though, the bells just indicate the time of day.

The calls to the Mosque is not an invitation. It is a requirement. And it applies to all that hear it. You too. Yea, you! The Muslims just don't have the power to drag you into the Mosque, yet.

If you do go to the Christian church they won't tell you it's OK to kill, rape or tax "non-Christians". They won't tell you that you must work to exterminate all other churches that are "non-Christian". They won't tell you it's OK to beat your wife, or daughter. They won't tell you that it's OK to lie to "non-Christians". The priest, or preacher or whatever will not attempt to run your life such that you must know how to wipe you ass a certain way. They won't tell you who to associate with, who to marry, what to buy, what not to buy, etc, etc, etc.

9/11 was horrible. There was only one positive thing that came from it in my view. It made me look at Islam. I don't like what I saw.

"The argument could be that church bells are historical since our country was founded on Christianity."

For a long time in this country, it was understood that the government could enforce what was called "general Christianity," a kind of non-denominational obeisance to Biblical and Christian principles; this was not believed to violate the First Amendment. It was understood that Christianity had a certain "pride of place" in the USA and that public policy, and the law, could defend specifically Christian values - hence the "blue laws" of yesteryear, swearing on the Bible, etc. Needless to say, this doctrine has severely eroded in the last 50 years, and it is unlikely it could be resurrected in this instance to ban the Islamic prayer.

I've probably read as much or more about Islam than anyone on this thread

The problem is that you probably read stuff from a neutral, purely educational point of view like I did, starting about 13 years ago. These guys won't think you know a thing unless you read with a pre-concieved view of hatred towards Islam and see everything in that light. In their view, not one bit of the Quran can be good teaching, nor can any follower of Islam be a good person.

You got it.

Also, it's hard to defend the modern West. Mohammedans look at the West and see homosexuality, abortion, drunkenness, drug usage and immorality all around.

I'd hate America too if I was one of them.

There are actual "words" to this prayer call. These are words by people whose religion calls for the killing of all non-muslims, specifically Christians and Jews. These are the people who say we will take over the world...the same format of the Prophet.

The Christian Religion tolerates the rest of the religions and does NOT call for killing them off. It wishes for peace but not by annilation of the rest of society.

There is no smilarity between the bells and the call of the Muslims.

Watch out...when the citizens try to reverse the ruling...The Muslims will cry racism.

I am worried about that, and the Christians need to keep their cool and show no signs that their opposition is actually anti-Muslim. That would give CAIR far too much ammo for their agenda.

Church bells ring once per week, and they're pleasant sounding; Mooselimb calls for "prayer" happen 5 freakin' times per day, and they sound like angry yodeling meece.

Why can't the Koraniacs instead just buy watches and set their alarms for the prayer times? Answer: because they delight in shoving their sick cult down the throats of the American people.

can we defend allowing church bells while banning the Islamic prayer call

Steve, go read "The Gulag Archipelago" instead of the Hildebeasts book. If you want fairness go to the NBA & tell them they need more white players to be fair. Go ring your church bells in Iran & see what happens.

People like Steve why we are going to lose Western Civilization. Hope you like Islamic law and tribalism, cause when we lose western civilization that is what we are going to get.

Christan values and Western civilization are inseparable. Lose one you lose the other.

THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for your wisdom!!! I am so grateful for all the responses to this Michigan catastrophe that will be encouraging Christians to DO SOMETHING!!!

This affects us all. I expect to hear on the news about all the church bells ringing in hamtrack SEVEN TIMES DAILY, 5 times to drown out the false god of islam and two additional times for good measure!

All PRACTICING CHRISTIAN CHURCHES in the town and surrounding townships should do the same.

Your koranic cheerleading does not belong here.

It is not cheerleading. It is correcting the falsehoods constantly spewed out the the enemies of any religion.

A person exactly like you exists in Islam. We call him an anti-American Muslim fundamentalist. It is your views on both sides that causes the strife we see today. Hate clouds your judgement.

Here's the issue: 5:00am and 10:00pm. Churches across America have had to cease ringing their bells during "quiet times" and yet the call to prayer is going to be heard at 5am and 10pm, when the tolling has been forced to cease.
