MARGARET THATCHER today paid tribute to her former close political ally Ronald Reagan as his body lay in state in Washington.
The former Prime Minister, who described him as "a great American hero", was among the mourners to visit the Capital Rotunda where the body of the former US President had been placed ahead of a national funeral service tomorrow.
The lying in state followed a ceremony which drew tens of thousands of people on to the streets of the US capital.
As the flag-draped coffin lay inside the Capitol building, Mr Reagans bereaved wife, Nancy, ran her hand along its length, a look of anguish on her face.
The body of the 40th President was taken to Washington after lying in repose at his official library in California.
After the national funeral ceremony, at which Baroness Thatcher will join President George Bush in eulogising Mr Reagan, there will be a private burial back at the Reagan library.
Baroness Thatcher paid a glowing tribute to the former President after hearing of his death at the weekend.
"President Reagan was one of my closest political and dearest personal friends," she said.
"He had a higher claim than any other leader to have won the Cold War for liberty, and he did it without a shot being fired.
"To have achieved so much against so many odds and with such humour and humanity made Ronald Reagan a truly great American hero."
The ceremonies in Washington have prompted a massive security operation and some streets were briefly evacuated yesterday, moments before Mr Reagans coffin arrived.
The former President died surrounded by his wife, his daughter Patti Davis and son Ron on Saturday, aged 93, after a long struggle with Alzheimers disease.

Ping!
I remember how much the liberal press hated the partnership between these two.
Read this morning that Margaret Thatcher did a curtsy (sp?) in front of the President's casket ... an act only reserved for royalty. God bless the Iron Lady.
We knew in our heart that Lady Thatcher would pay her respects to President Reagan in person...what a classy lady she is....we wish her all the best of health...and love....
This photo is stunning.
Lady Thatcher - there will never be another like her.
Yes, she did. I didn't know what she did at first, I thought she was walking down a step, but she did bow her body briefly at his casket. Just seeing her there brought me to tears (again). A great lady.
That's because the hate anything that is Good
She showed so much dignity it was the most touching moment of the ceremony. Other than our beloved Cheney, of course.
Tony
Good to have you back, friend.
Ivan..conservatives may well win in Canada..Bush wil win comfortably this fall, sounds like the good guysin the UK are getting the vote becuase of the EU referendum....what's going on?..can the Tories get their act together on your side of the pond?...let me pose the question ina different manner. Of al the Brit pols today, which one,IYHO, has the potential to be the most "Thatcherlike."
Lady Thatcher and President Reagan represent what is right in this world versus the dark side, the lunatic left politicians then and now.
Such a wonderful lady! I saw a clip of her touching Reagan's casket this morning on the news and I just broke down completely. When you see clips of her meeting Reagan when he was president you could feel the true friendship. God Bless Margaret Thatcher and President Reagan!
The "Iron Lady". A total class act. Her and President Reagan were a heck of a team.
Welcome back Ivan.

I saw her curtsy by Ronnie's casket and thought it was a loving gesture. Almost from another age.
He had a higher claim than any other leader to have won the Cold War for liberty, and he did it without a shot being fired.
All in all, not bad, not bad at all.
Her friend.
I remember well, bombs falling on Khaddafi's head, and we were backed 110% by the Iron Lady! She has more guts than all the Frogs in France.
