Archives Staff Was Suspicious of Berger
Washington Post ^ | July 22, 2004 | John F. Harris and Susan Schmidt

Last Oct. 2, former Clinton national security adviser Samuel R. "Sandy" Berger stayed huddled over papers at the National Archives until 8 p.m.

What he did not know as he labored through that long Thursday was that the same Archives employees who were solicitously retrieving documents for him were also watching their important visitor with a suspicious eye.

After Berger's previous visit, in September, Archives officials believed documents were missing. This time, they specially coded the papers to more easily tell whether some went missing, said government officials and legal sources familiar with the case.

The notion of one of Washington's most respected foreign policy figures being subjected to treatment that had at least a faint odor of a sting operation is a strange one. But the peculiarities -- and conflicting versions of events and possible motives -- were just then beginning in a case that this week bucked Berger out of an esteemed position as a leader of the Democratic government-in-waiting that had assembled around presidential nominee John F. Kerry.

As his attorneys tell it, Berger had no idea in October that documents were missing from the Archives, or that archivists suspected him in the disappearance. It was not until two days later, on Saturday, Oct. 4, that he was contacted by Archives employees who said that they were concerned about missing files, from his September and October visits. This call -- in Berger's version of the chronology, which is disputed in essential respects by a government official with knowledge of the investigation -- was made with a tone of concern, but not accusation.

You know it could really be just routine for these people, they've donned the kneepads so many times 'for the cause' that it's just natural to them to cover the Clintons' at all cost.

Surely he wouldn't do this for himself. HillandBill is at the center of this once again. I'm sure Berger is considering all those who've gone before him who are either 6ft under or in jail. I suppose Webster Hubbel is still rolling over.

Sloppy? Yeah - that what we want in our leadership - sloppy.

Sloppy with the law, sloppy with our classified documents, sloppy with our national security, sloppy with our lives.

There were so many, who knows?!

If people only knew who was running this country while Bill Clinton fiddled they would be shocked!

I try and watch as much lib media as I can. I'm pretty embedded, although Nightline is almost impossible to take.

Tonight was a preview of the 9/11 commission report. Not only did they bring in Dick Clarke, but they had the 9/11 widows on again, all the old players and recruits from the height of the 9/11 commission buzz days of 2003/2004. They put them up there like we hadn't already found out what a sham they were.

Actually they did have a bit of a sorrowful tone, like gee, our whole little plan's probably not gonna wash, but we're sorta stuck going through the motions of portraying the fiction that Bush ignored terrorism while Clinton was singularly focused upon it. I couldn't even look at Clarke when he was talking. I kinda felt bad for him, clinging sadly as he was to his dissapearing shred of credibility with a certain Joe Wilson-esque desperation.

I hope that Bergergate goes right to the matter and exposes these "fictitions" and the tactics of the fictators. Wilson, Berger, Clarke, Clinton, and then Kerry - the dominoes are falling.

I'm having flashbacks to hot summer afternoons watching Sam Ervin and the Watergate hearings.

No problems.

Have to sign off now, but this story will live for a long time yet. I just hope the same prognosis holds true for Sandy Berger.

I'm hoping and praying Berger comes clean and spills the beans on BC.

Clinton people KNEW that AQ was in the United States and did NOTHING. They didn't even follow their OWN recommendations. It's why Ashcroft mentioned in his 9/11 testimony that it's important to read the report because it was clear the recommendations were not followed. He said they would be hard recommendations to implement and there would be criticism and he knew that because he's in that position now post 9/11.

This was mentioned but what Ashcroft also said is that none of this was breifed to hime during the handover!!

Sorry if someone has already suggested this, but rather than the conventional speculation that this was leaked by the Clintons to sink Kerry's campaign, could perhaps this be a Kennedy/Kerry strike to sink the Clintons? Surely rumors filtered back to them since Oct. that Berger had been busted, so Kerry knew that if he didn't get this out now, it might pop up as an Oct. surprise that burns him. So not only does he get the dirty mess out of the way now(damage control), but he potentially can also 'Sister Souljah' the Clintons, if he plays it right.

But then again, it is Kerry, and he is just as slimy, so I doubt he'll be able to take advantage of this. But I am not buying for a minute any hogwash that the Kerry campaign didn't know about this before the story broke.

I suspect Sandy Burgled some prior drafts with incriminating handwritten notes.

These incriminating notes might have related to the reported Sudanese offer to hand over Bin Laden, which Berger subsequently denied.

Doesn't that "daughter" look a little old for those two to "own"? Sorry, but I don't trust anyone who associates with the Clintons. I wouldn't trust those children with them for anything in this world, period.

What the hell would some punk from Arkansas, with no experience, know about NATIONAL SECURITY?! I will NEVER forgive or forget anyone associated with the Clintons for getting us in this mess.

BTW, how would Hillary Clinton get ahead in the RAT party unless she got "her people" in high places in the government? Yes, most of them are "friends" of the Clintons just waiting for her to get elected President to get back in power.

Same here. That has been the only thing I believe that has held the Justice Department at bay. No one willing or able to do the right thing.

Maybe one day Monica will thank Linda Tripp for saving her life.

Monica is too ignorant to know that the only reason that she is alive today is because of Linda Tripp.

I still think the Clintons picked Edwards as their stalking horse and "gave" him people.

Possibly, but I find it very interesting that Clark was at that MoveOn-sponsored conference at the end of October with Hillary, Berger and Joe Wilson, (re my post # 169 above). They seem kind of chummy with Clark, which makes me think he may have been the stalking horse.

What a great report of what you witnessed. Believe me, we all appreciate the sacrifice you made so we could all be informed.

I secod the nomination of burrian as official Freeper monitor of Nightline (unless you think you can't take it on a steady basis)

In addition to your notes, your assessment that Clarke is in the thick of it is spot on. He's the author of the drafts that were taken.

Thanks for that post of goings on of October 2003 (I'll withhold comment on Hagel's disgraceful participation at such an event at this time. I want to think he's a fool and useful tool rather than a bad guy).

The other cast of characters are of course firmly in the bad guy category.

Can someone tell me what authorization he had to go in there?
I mean, call me dumb or something, but the burgler doesn't work for anyone officially, does he?
No clinton admin now, and for sure doesn't work for GW, so how is he allowed access to secure buildings?
What authority, (no controlling legal authority, LOL)
Even as advisor to Kerry, I wouldn't think his previous clearances stay in effect after that term?
Please clarify this for me.

What in the holy hell? Why would they be calling Clinton insiders, instead of calling the FBI?

It's all part of the good ol' boy network.

Before this is over we're going to find out how far reaching across party lines that network is.

I expect any day now to hear from a Republican (probably a Senator) about what a wonderful, honest man "Sandy" is....Don't forget, there's still a matter of about 900 missing FBI files....on Republicans.
