Local Vet Recalls Time on Kerry's Swiftboat (Mike Medeiros)

Medeiros is on active duty in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant -- he's helping to train National Guard units on their way to Iraq at Ft. Bliss, Texas -- and cannot directly endorse any candidates.

But he and his crew mates showed up on stage with Kerry last month at the Democratic Convention in Boston.

Kerry's boat happened to hit the shore right in front of an enemy soldier holding a grenade launcher. The soldier started running, maybe to get enough distance to be able to fire his weapon at the boat, Medeiros said.

Kerry's forward gunner managed to hit the guerrilla, who appeared to be a teenager, according to reports on the incident. Although he was hit in the leg, the guerrilla kept running with his weapon, which could have done serious damage to the boat and the sailors on board.

Medeiros remembers Kerry jumping off the boat to give chase.

"I saw him running down this trail after this guy, and I followed him," Medeiros said. "Just as I rounded a corner behind him, (Kerry) shot the guy."

The family was solidly Democrat. Medeiros' grandfather kept a photo of Franklin D. Roosevelt in the basement. Medeiros' father inherited the photo and hung it in the garage.

The crew of PCF-94 drifted apart after the war, but met up again years later to help one of Kerry's Senate re-election campaigns, Medeiros said.

"We all said, 'If you run for president we'll campaign with you,' " Medeiros said. "We've all become pretty fast and close friends."

I'm posting this not to trash Medeiros--he is still serving his country--but because he's quoted on the record this month about the current controversy.

The article says Medeiros was staunchly for the Vietnam war, but later came to agree with Kerry's anti-Vietnam war activities.

As even some of the Swift boat Vets for Truth have said. Even the worst soldiers can't help but do something good once in a while. The thing about Kerry, as with Bush and any other politician, is trends, and a basic principle from which their decisions are based. I commend Senator Kerry for what good he did in Vietnam, but I believe he IS unfit for command.

This is a joke, right? Appearing on stage at the Dem convention wasn't an endorsement? Right -- and pigs fly.

For the last thirty six years this guy has really had a steep career path. He is still a staff sergeant, and remains on active duty?

A carton of cigarettes could buy his loyalty in all probability.

Ouch. Harsh, but fair.

It was a more "sensitive" war.

he's a reservist that has been activated most likely. I doubt that he has been on active duty for 36 years now.

See page 83 of Unfit For Command. Michael Medeiros tells of an agreement with Kerry, the night before the silver star episode, to beach the boats if fired upon. Larry Lee, a crewman and gunner recalls a discussion of " probable medals ". Bronze stars for landers and Navy commendation medals for others. See earlier thread about Alston being on Kerry's boat or not. Picture of 2-28-69 regarding silver medal presentation. Sandusky and Thorsen are wearing medals. Can not tell from picture if others are wearing any medals. Everyone buy the book !

These guys all got medals in connection with this event. That may be why they back Kerry to the hilt: if it is found that the medals were the result of false or exaggerated reports, they all suffer the same loss of face.

And WHERE are we sposed to buy the book? I called my nearby Bookstar and was told "it doesn't come out til September." I disputed that but she remained steady. I then called B&N and they said they're getting theirs on Monday or Tuesday so I put one on hold. Liberals are sooooo freakin' annoying!

First I've heard of anyone named Larry Lee. I thought ALL his crew members had come out for sKerry except for Gardner. Interesting....

I really don't think that contradicts what the Swifties say. They don't dispute that any of that happened, just that it deserved a medal. O'Neill says Kerry had a boat armed to the teeth and manned with lots of personnel, against a lone teenager. No disparity of force, no medal.
