Which leaves five possibilities:

1) We are looking at the worlds first balding 45 year old married, white, Belgian parent terrorist.

2) The web page is a complete fake.

3) The posts are fakes (art?)

4) The Hotmail account was hijacked by someone wanting an untraceable relay (skript kiddies do this all the time).

5) The headers to the usenet postings were forged (also fairly easy to do) and this poor sap just happened to be the unlucky fall guy.

In any case, I doubt that Mr. Gobin has anything to do with any terrorist groups.

Too many people here think they're experts on aviation and yet probably couldn't tell a 737 from an A320 and a 767 from an A300.

Well, I know I could - having flown in just about all of them. But, that really has almost zero bearing in the current discussion since we are probably talking about Tupelovs... ;0)

Every time a plane crashes, no matter where it is, the majority of people here assume it is terrorism. Then later when it is shown to be human error, mechanical problems, or other non-terrorist related causes, some here will insist it is a government conspiracy and that it had to be terrorism.

So? Does this really cause you any hardship? Why make it so personal? I can't understand that at all...

Whether or not it is the truth, the Russian government will blame this on Chechen rebels, and the rest of the world is likely to shrug and move on. So I agree with you that nobody is going to get all worked up 9/11 style.

Soooo, If I understand what you are saying: The transponder could be shut off, the plane could still be in the air and flying, destination unknown, and the quality of radar in Europe is such that they might re-locate it, if it is still flying, because it is very difficult to get a radar return off just the plane?

Can you flesh this idea out just a little more?

Is there any chance the plane could still be in the air and heading for Athens? I get really confused with time zones, but I know Athens is 10 hours ahead of me here in Calif. I don't know the time split to Moscow from here, and I don't know the flying time (approx) to Athens from where the plane took off.

What I am asking here is: Could this plane be flying to Athens and be able to avoid being picked up by radar?

I dunno about the rest of the headers but I can tell you with all certainity the e-mail address is false. No one uses there e-mail address on usenet unless you want to sign up for 1000 pieces of spam a day.

Tin-foil hat time: I remember reading in assorted articles, papers and analysis that the "Next 9/11" would occur ~60 days prior to the election and that it would be preceeded by attacks in Europe. Anyone else remember this (I didn't think to book-mark them unfortunately).

It's certainly considerable. What I find interesting on the map is the distance between the 2 crash points. The time both planes dropped off radar is within minutes of each other, which would suggest a timed device of some kind.

All that we've confirmed so far is they have 2 confirmed crash sites.
