Aug. 28, 2004 — MOSCOW (Reuters) - Explosives have been found in the wreckage of the second of two jets which crashed almost simultaneously this week, Russia's FSB security service said on Saturday.

"Additional examination of the fragments of the Tu-134 aircraft which crashed Tuesday ... has revealed traces of hexogen," an FSB spokesman said by telephone.

The FSB said Friday that hexogen, more widely known as RDX, had been found in the wreckage of the other plane which crashed Tuesday in southern Russia.

What are a people who do not have the firepower to strike back supposed to do?

Sawing the heads off Russian conscripts and mailing the videos to their parents didn't work, bombing civilian apartment blocks in Moscow didn't work, taking an entire theatre of civilians hostage didn't work, now they are trying this.

Maybe they can attack a hospital... wait, the Chechins already did.

One cannot condone terrorist acts. On the other hand how does a nation that has been ravaged by it's larger neighbor fight back?

By declaring independence and shooting the neighbor's soldiers. If one has to resort to "terrorism" then your cause is not just.

If you don't have enough people ready to honorably defend your independence, then you are not ready for independence.

I have no problem with them following Ghandi, they can also set themselves on fire if they are that distressed. I do not agree that striking aircraft makes sense. Are you with them on this? I have not followed the uprising, I understand the US does not support Russia and their heavy hand, but I don't know what is at stake. In the case of terrorism, I have a blanket answer. You kill innocents, you should die and go to Hell. If they want to protest Russia intervention, they should protest against the Russian military. Maybe I would have some sympathy for them then. Maybe so would the world. Maybe they should vote with their feet and move to a more Islamic state? When you are against overwhelming forces, you hunker down and bring the fight to another time. (Is that not what Muhammad did?)

The Russians have killed thousands of Chechen civilians.

Many of whom were muslim terrorists, and most of the rest of whom were supporters of or sympathizers with terrorists.

The Russians are fighting one more front in the war on worldwide Islamic terror. It's a seamless germent from the Philippines to Nigeria to New York. Only the naive continue to view the Chechen "front" in the WOT as an isolated war against "separatists." These Chechen ladies blew themselves up for Allah, not for a "free Grozney." Their goal is not a free Chechnya, it's to make Chechnya part of the worldwide islamic caliphate.

Yes, Chechnya had de facto independence after the Soviet breakup, but they used Chechnya as a base to foment revolution in neighboring provinces. That is why they got crushed. This is simply part of the 1400 year old Islamic jihad.

I looked up hexogen on GuruNet and came across this item on a Russian website called Terror-99. Kinda obscure, but interesting because of this paragraph.

"On March 5, 2002 I first made public the fact that there were indications of the theft of 5 tonnes of hexogen slabs from this same army unit No. 92 919. But they were not investigated at all. These named examples and others demonstrate that Russian officials are, as previously, performing actions in clear contravention of Russian law in investigating the facts stated by myself."

I wonder how much hexogen it takes to bring down an aircraft and if the chemical detectors in the airports would pick it up?

We already have our answer. They 'should' join the Worldwide Islamic Jihad, and get some training/financing from OBL. How many Checens were figthing for OBL in Afghanistan? How many are at Gitmo right now?

The Checens have made thier choice and it was a poor one.

Yep Chadgores description in number 9 above is printable version. Hexogen in the form of Cyclonite has been around since prior to second world war. Basically C3H6N6O6 for all those playing the home game of anarchist are us.

It's right up there equal to C-4 in relative equivalency factors and brisance. Multiple sources possible as to where it came from.

I think the tampon bomb is the big threat on commercial aircraft these days........

I agree with you. I am surprised by how little press this story received in the US Media. It was obvious from the beginning it was a terrorist plot. The planes took off from the same airport and each crashed within an hour of each other. What are the odds of something like that happening by accident? The answer is one in a million at best.

I wonder how many pounds a female jihadist can put "up there?" Enough, I guess. You need a non metallic cap though, right? I'm guessing the bombs were pre-primed with identical timers. No smoking fuse this time. Or perhaps they lit them in the lav? Preset timers takes away the "second thoughts" factor, and the Richard Reid "screwup factor."

Ya know my personal policy on "how too threads"..... It's still too easy to get caps thru a security system. Too many ways w/o caps also.....

Stay safe !

What type of explosive was used by the shoe bomber?

I vaguely recall a mixture of two items, perhaps an explosive with some kind of detonator mixed. The stories at the time said what he had was very unstable.

each crashed within an hour of each other.

I think problems were "indicated" within three or four minutes of each other, not an hour.
