How North Vietnam Won The War
By Grunt.com
Grunt.com | April 26, 2004

What did the North Vietnamese leadership think of the American antiwar movement? What was the purpose of the Tet Offensive? How could the U.S. have been more successful in fighting the Vietnam War? Bui Tin, a former colonel in the North Vietnamese army, answers these questions in the following excerpts from an interview conducted by Stephen Young, a Minnesota attorney and human-rights activist [in The Wall Street Journal, 3 August 1995]. Bui Tin, who served on the general staff of North Vietnam's army, received the unconditional surrender of South Vietnam on April 30, 1975. He later became editor of the People's Daily, the official newspaper of Vietnam. He now lives in Paris, where he immigrated after becoming disillusioned with the fruits of Vietnamese communism.

Question: How did Hanoi intend to defeat the Americans?

Answer: By fighting a long war which would break their will to help South Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh said,

"We don't need to win military victories, we only need to hit them until they give up and get out."

Q: Was the American antiwar movement important to Hanoi's victory?

A: It was essential to our strategy. Support of the war from our rear was completely secure while the American rear was vulnerable. Every day our leadership would listen to world news over the radio at 9 a.m. to follow the growth of the American antiwar movement. Visits to Hanoi by people like Jane Fonda, and former Attorney General Ramsey Clark and ministers gave us confidence that we should hold on in the face of battlefield reverses. We were elated when Jane Fonda, wearing a red Vietnamese dress, said at a press conference that she was ashamed of American actions in the war and that she would struggle along with us.

Q: Did the Politburo pay attention to these visits?

A: Keenly.

Q: Why?

A: Those people represented the conscience of America. The conscience of America was part of its war-making capability, and we were turning that power in our favor. America lost because of its democracy; through dissent and protest it lost the ability to mobilize a will to win.

You make me smile. I appreciate your confidence. I really believe that this is the central message of the Dems this time. I am hoping the American people get this message. Listen well, consider what it means and then completely and humiliatingly reject it. I believe the Swifties poked a hole in them, but they cannot be left to be the only ones carrying this water.

"Heck, O'Reilly hasn't even read Unfit for Command, he's as cutting edge as PBS!!"

That is a defining issue of O'Reilly for me.

...NJ pick 6 lottery yesterday, I'd be a millionaire right now ..I didn't ..What's their point ?

This is code intended for the WV Dem-registering, ballot-stuffing, cigarette-distributing, bus-driving-the-old-folks-all-around-town operatives to "get out the vote" this time, or they'll be blaming them again next election cycle.

"Actually those of us that live here in SD are very knowledgeable with respect to politics. "

Thanks for explaining about SD politics! I think many of us who live in other states sometimes scratch our heads in bewilderment over politics in SD, Mass., NY, etc. And we fail to appreciate all of the dynamics going on in your part of the country!

"What will be the next torpedo for the Kerry?"

Kerry and his wife just filmed a Dr. Phil TV show in which they are supposed to be claiming that "Bush lied" about healthcare in America.

That episode airs in October.

No one points out that in viet nam we had thousands of casualties and still lost but here it's a whole different ball game thanks to Tommie Franks an GW.

"Hate to be so pessimistic, but I live in NM."

Weren't there something like 2000 overvotes in 2000? Wouldn't Bush have won otherwise? Can't remember the details.

Daschle talking about breakdown in intelligence ... and how did that happen? Remember Sen. Church, Sen. Toricelli? Jimmy Carter?

I hope Thune and others hit Little Tommy Daschle with the Senate's role concerning the intelligence problems. They could start by saying "you know, maybe if some of the Senators on the intelligence committee were showing up for the committee meetings, GWB would have had some decent intelligence available early in his term and not just Clinton leftovers. You were Majority Leader for part of that period, Senator. Why weren't you paying attention?"

"Read that while the steel unions are supporting Kerry, the rank and file are totally supporting Bush and have said so."

The last poll of unions that I saw combined *all* unions, including government and teachers unions, and had a split vote of something like 47% JFK to 38% GWB, which is an OUTSTANDING performance for our side in that demographic.

Although you don't list the Sunday morning Chris Matthews show on your list, I'd like to make the following comment:

Joe Klein, the Time magazine reporter, completely went off the deep end as far as objectivity went when he accused the President of flip flopping on an issue. He didn't just try to make a point. He started waving both arms from side to side while hollering "FLIP FLOP Flip FLOP" in a manner reminiscent of the Republicans at their convention.

Is it possible to ever take his 'objective' viewpoint seriously again.

I suggest we might want to let NBC and Time know about this with a flood of complaints.

how many no-bid contracts did Halliburton get from the toon?

I'm not sure how many, but it was several billion dollars worth of no-bid work in Bosnia and Kosovo.

Amazingly, one of Kerry's top campaign aides/supporters receives $500K a year to lobby for Halliburton. I believe that was mentioned by Rush last week.

(I should note that the way Congress & govt works most large companies feel obligated to have a lobbying firm(s) with GOP and Dem connections. That way the company can minimize risk of govt inquisition or harmful regulations against them from either party.)

Do you think there might be a reason why the MSM pick Sen. CHUCK HEGEL time after time as the spokesperson for the Republican point of view?

When was the last time you saw the Senate majority leader Frist or another Republican who supports the President. No, they always go to the ones who disagree.

This is blatant weighting of the issues on the side of the Dems and liberals in my opinion.

This thread needs to be separated by networks since some of these shows are on simultaneously. I couldn't find the discussion about Face the Nation. (or Maybe I'm just not fully awake...)
