Activist filmmaker Michael Moore is not coming to Memphis today after all.
State Rep. Kathryn Bowers, chairman of the Shelby County Democratic Party, said Moore's "rally the troops" speech set for today was canceled because Moore was "ill with the flu" and because she was concerned about "security issues" involving a possible Republican Party protest.
However, Moore's Friday night speech at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas was scheduled to go on as planned; and he is still scheduled to speak tonight at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Bowers cited an E-mail sent out Monday by local Republican Party chairman Kemp Conrad as cause for concern. In the E-mail, Conrad called the rally "a hateful and partisan event."
The E-mail asked Republicans to gather in protest outside the Democratic rally, but Conrad said Friday he had called off the protest, deciding it was better to ignore Moore.
The hastily arranged Moore appearance -- one of the few free events on the filmmaker's tour -- was announced Oct. 7.
Even without Moore, Bowers said, the rally will go on as scheduled at 1 p.m. today at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, 2237 S. Parkway East. She said the speakers will include state Rep. Henri Brooks and House Speaker Pro Tem Lois DeBerry. A ticket is no longer required.
Must be Swine Flu (actually the best BBQ in Memphis is found at Leonard's)
He was on Leno last night, they usually tape that show early and then an hour ride to Vegas where he appeared at the campus of UNLV where he was met with a large crowd of protesters.
Since when do churches hold political rallies? Does the separation of church and state no longer exist? I don't have a problem with politicians and activists talking about their faith at churches but most of the time it goes way beyond that. Campaigning for candidates at churches is not just wrong, it's illegal. I thought this was a big issue with the Democrats. So for them it's wrong to have the Ten Commandments on public property but not wrong to campaign at churches?
Moore has the flu? Not likely, but I wish he did anyways, Sars flu, and I hope he dies.
In reality, he probably over ate again, because he was nervous walking into Republican territory.
Should Micheal Moore worry about getting a punch in the face by a patriot? Of course he should!
I'm sure there are quite a few guys and gals out there who accept an asault charge for an opportunity to punch that fat bugger in the mouth. He should really consider moving to another country.
canceled because Moore was "ill with the flu"
I don't know why...
He ate all that pie...
Perhaps he'll die...
Old Burl Ives song.
Tennessee: Loser-Free Zone. :)
Michael Moore with the flu. Now there's a pretty picture, if you just stop and think about it.
Did you see this???
