Need help finding name of drug-addicted news anchor

I'm doing a little research on drugs and the media... er... drugs in the media. I seem to recall that, back during the early eighties, there was a female anchor doing a live broadcast for a national network's evening news. Instead of performing amicably, she was high on drugs (cocaine?) Her eyes were dialated, her speech was slurred, and she was replaced right after the first break.
Anyone know who this mystery anchorwoman was and what happened to her?
Wish I could remember more details

I saw the Jessica Savage movie....I believe it was a car accident. Her car flipped over in a river or something and she drowned.

Jessica Savitch drowned when her car flipped into a canal south of New Hope PA in October 1983. I was living there at the time and heard nothing official about any drug use, nor was there anything in the rumor mill.

I just looked her up and it was Jessica Savitch who slurred her way through a news broadcast....happened three weeks before her death. Not trying to bad mouth her....just trying to help out with the info.

Jessica Savitch showed up for a newscast obviously impaired. She claimed it was a prescription drug reaction, but I think it caused her to lose her position. She was big star at the time.

Drugs and the media? I heard thet Matt Lauer was pretty big coke head when he was co-anchoring PM Magazine in Rhode Island during the early 80's.
