There seems to be a "better then you" attitude at the heart of this thread and I wonder if that is a path we really want to go down.

It is just good-natured rivalry talk (both rank and service).

Service-folk tend towards the competitive (to say the least)

Not better, just deserving of some reconginition. These men performed one of the greatest honors possible and that is defending our freedom, they deserve to be thanked, dosen't mean that your are any less of a person if you chose not to join, unless you are a draft dodger, but that is a different topic.
