Infant Girl Left In Hot Car Dies

A baby was found dead inside a car Thursday after her father went to pick her up at her daycare and workers there told him she had never arrived, authorities said.

Gabriel Saavedra rushed out to his car at Storybook Nursery School and found his tiny daughter, Kayli, still strapped in her infant seat from that morning, police said.

Emergency workers said the girl, who would have been 5 months old on Saturday, was declared dead on the scene.

Lets say for example that Mom usually drops the baby off, but she has a meeting and Dad has to do it. He drives to work with the radio on and the baby is sleeping. Doesn't make a peep. He is distracted and forgets to go to the sitter. He just follows his usual rout, parks, locks the car and goes into the building, like he does every other day.

****

But then he remembers that he needs to go pick her up after work? It takes him all flippin' day to remember...Nope, don't buy it...

Yep, people are forgetful. I have driven with coffee on the car. One of my kids got her tax return from the accountant, drove to work and left it scattered along her route.

So people on FR are immune from correction for their ethical and moral lapses? You think that the prevalence of crime is a justification? Might makes right?

Do you know what a hideous death that child suffered? And for what?

But if I ran a daycare, I would call and check why an infant wasn't in on a given day. It's only common sense.

Perhaps the daycare did call. They may have tried to reach the mother. Not enough info to accuse the daycare of not using common sense.

This happened to a guy at my work. His wife (who also works here), usually took the kid to daycare, but on this day, he did as she had a meeting. Mom goes to pick up the baby after work, and the daycare tells her he is not there. SO she calls dad on the cell and asks where the son is. It was then he realized he had forgotten to drop the baby off. He ran to the parking lot, she ran from the daycare (it is in close proximity to our work) to the lot...the police were called. Dad was afraid to open the car door, mom was prone on the pavement screaming. They finaly opened the door..and LUCKILY, the baby was still alive, though he had been trapped in his carseat for 8 hours, It was late fall here, and we had been having an uncommonly cool week, which definitely saved the baby. When the ambulance pulled away, the police would not allow the parents in the back...dad was kneeling on the ground crying his eyes out.

The way I read it is he remembererd to pick her up from daycare in the afternoon, but didn't realize that he never dropped her off in the first place. Absolutely tragic. Prayers to the family.

I don't like day care, but abusive is a bit strong. Some a very good, some stink.

The cost of living in some places is incredibly high. Maybe these are folks doing the best they can. After all, they could have chosen abortion so they didn't have to deal with the kid at all.

Nope, don't buy that either. I had 4 kids (three of them 3-1/2 & younger) and all the other kids would make enough racket not to forget the baby. And believe me, there were plenty of sleepless nights.

My middle daughter once hid the baby under a bed and wouldn't tell anyone where he was. He had been sleeping in one of those plastic rocker seats, on the floor next to her, while she was watching cartoons.

I agree with your scenario. Add sleeplessness and fatigue of a new baby to the mix and it is even more likely.

Oh, for pete's sake!!! I give up!!! I was proposing a common sense safety check.

And no...they didn't call.

There are stories like this every summer.

How many people walked right by that car not noticing the baby in the back.

I never walk through a parking lot at the market or mall without checking cars as I pass by. I wish more people would do this - kind of a silent patrol - I check for dogs too.

My car has a feature that the air bag can be turned off if you are transporting something/someone in the front seat who might suffer injury.

These Consumer Groups who go over bad toys, equipment for kids, car seats.... they never look beyond the immediate thing. An alarm for a child in a back seat would be wonderful.

I agree with the person who queried the day care too. Why didn't they call when the child didn't arrive?

I have driven to work many times and am surprised when I arrive at my destination - I wonder if I had been hypnotized covering the same ground each day - and anything different might have gone unnoticed.

This is so sad, even so, we are all human and make mistakes.

Daycares expect the parents to call them if the child isn't going to be dropped off--tho I think your common sense idea is a great one. Typically, a center can handle making a few phone calls every morning to check if a child hasn't come in.

My guess, and who knows the truth, is that this was not a moral error, he did not decide to bake his child, he made an egregious mistake.

It is not an ethical error.

Day care did not kill this child, he could have been dropping the baby at Grandmother's house.

I know the death was hideous, I am not retarded. And the death was for no reason, it served no purpose and my best guess knowing what I know is that is did not occur from malice, evil or intent.

It was a tragic error. The kind of error that parents make and children suffer from. If you are so full of hubris that you assume you would never make a serious error that would result in someone's death or injury, I think you are in serious error.

Every parent who has a child is at risk of a lapse that results in harm to a child. Most try their damnest not to have it happen but it does. And it is tragic.

What kind of man (or woman, for that matter) would put a five-month-old in daycare?

Sorry, I got in on this thread a little late....

I have a friend who put their newborn in daycare at the age of 6 WEEKS!

The excuse is that the family cannot exist without the second income provided by the mother. In this case, the mom simply did not want to stay "homebound" - she wanted to be "out and about and around people" as she put it.

No, I don't have children, but I have told my husband that if we do decide to have children, I - and NO ONE ELSE will raise them and that I will not be working outside of the home.

true, but any real responsible parent doesn't forget their kid is in the back seat.

You don't buy what I just said? About my personal experience with leaviing a baby in a restaurant? Or about this father?
