Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

I am in complete despair. I can hardly believe that the worst case scenario for hurricanes and the Gulf coast is about to unfold. We are about to lose an entire precious US city.

The doomsday scenario was fun to play with on the computer models. There's nothing fun about this. Hell is about to be unleashed.

Anyone who doesn't like MRE's never had to eat C-rations! ;-)

Absolutely right. I'll take MRE's anyday of the week.

No, is a nightmare in reverse, the real horror will be when we wake tomorrow.

REcon is in the storm right now. he may have seen a Recon report and mistaken the 140 in it as 140MPH when it may actually be 140KT. Just a speculation.

Last report was 160 MPH, and there has been no recon data since then to change the report to 140.

Quit spinning. He made an outrageous statement and got called for it. I read it before it got yanked.

He should be ashamed for saying such drivel.

The City of New Orleans
by Steve Goodman

Riding on the City of New Orleans,
Illinois Central Monday morning rail
Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders,
Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail.
All along the southbound odyssey
The train pulls out at Kankakee
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields.
Passin' trains that have no names,
Freight yards full of old black men
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.

CHORUS:
Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Dealin' card games with the old men in the club car.
Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score.
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor.
And the sons of pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel.
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel.

CHORUS

Nighttime on The City of New Orleans,
Changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee.
Half way home, we'll be there by morning
Through the Mississippi darkness
Rolling down to the sea.
And all the towns and people seem
To fade into a bad dream
And the steel rails still ain't heard the news.
The conductor sings his song again,
The passengers will please refrain
This train's got the disappearing railroad blues.

Good night, America, how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Anyone who doesn't like MRE's never had to eat C-rations! ;-)

Heh. I remember that. Remember 'Eunice King Kitchens' and that evil cake that took an entire canteen of water to wash it down?

MREs are a delicacy. The only thing that C's had going for them is the ability to use the B-2 cans as stoves, if you had some C4 or some Trioxane.

Red beans and rice? Yum!

Now that you mention it, I have some in my freezer that need to be defrosted, and tomorrow is Monday. Red Beans are the easiest Cajun dish to make. The only thing that doesn't require a roux.
