The one lesson the scenes of looting in New Orleans have hammered home is that the Founding Fathers knew what they were doing when they enacted the Second Amendment to the Constitution. They knew from experience that there is only a thin veneer between a civilized society and utter anarchy.
How many of us live in a city or town where we know that but for the precence of the police, we would be looking at the same type of lawlessness playing itself out on our televisions this week?
I for one am going to go out and purchase a shotgun. I'll be damned if I'm going to let some punk threaten my family and rob me a gun or knifepoint.
Seems to me that the best hurricane relief we can provide to the good folks of New Orleans and Biloxi, is a gun and some ammunition to guard what's left of their homes and business.
So thank you Founding Fathers for your foresight. We have looked into the belly of the beast, and it's not a pretty sight!

Or maybe they are criminals looking at the disaster as an opportunity to take high price items they didn't earn which IS the case.
To: Decombobulator
Maybe they're only stealing jewelery, etc so that they can trade it for food and other basic necessities. That is theft. Trade your labor or something you own for food and necessities. Stealing the private property of others is wrong.

"It's easy to criticize the looters when you're safe and sound in your home, and not hungry or thirsty. If you were dying of thirst and had a family who was starving you'd probably loot a store too."
Yes, because I need a new flat screen tv to survive.
Oh, and jewelry. Don't forget about the jewelry. It's small, valuable, easy to carry, and high in protein, or so I've heard.
The situational ethics displayed on this board are disgusting.

Police officers came by a short time later and stopped at the drug store which had been forced open by someone driving a fork lift truck but did little to stop the looters who were taking food from the store.

Also, If all of the stores were empty prior to the storm because people were buying up all of the supplies, why is the looting so rampant?

Forgedbotit. The MSM are in a full, "when in danger, when in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout" panic mode. A suggestion such as yours will flip them out.
Who do you give the weapons to? The victims and wannabe perps are totally intermixed. Such a scenario would arm as many, if not more perps, as upright citizens. Who is to be responsible for handing out the weapons to untrained and unknown persons? I can already hear the MSM screaming that racists are getting weapons to subdue poor starving Blacks.
I would wager there are some sicko hate America domestic Islamist Nazis who are firing on the rescuers doing all they can to exacerbate this horrible disaster.

These thugs aren't stealing food and water. They are stealing TV's, jewels, and the like. They are also hindering relief efforts.
And no, I wouldn't loot a store in that situation, but I may be stopping a few looters with a 12 gauge and .45.

Haha too funny. If they could think ahead that well they would have been bright enough to evacuate.

Mormons, (of which I am not one) love them or hate them. But, all Americans would be well advised to emulate the measures all Mormons take for having longterm emergency essential food, water and survival supplies on hand.

Actually beer makes sense since the water is undrinkable.

Looting for food and water from closed stores can be acceptable when there is no other way eg: charities, pantries, etc. Looting and robbery/car jacking jewelry stores and tv's is totally unacceptable. and one warning disregarded deserves center of mass disposal, you dont give a$$wipes a second chance when anarchy becomes the norm.

On the surface your idea has merit. There are, however, some problems with it. I would not want one of my firearms going into the hands of someone I don't know. Is this person qualified to handle the firearm? Does he or she have some sort of criminal background or mental problem that would make him or her a menace to those around them?
If those "law-abiding homeowners" are good citizens they should have already owned the firearms with which to protect their families, their property, and themselves. In this post-9/11 world everyone should be in a self-defense frame of mind. In my gun safe are a number of semi-automatic long guns, along with sufficient ammunition. The ammunition is not boxed, but is in bandoleers on stripper clips, ready to be stripped into magazines in an instant. Better safe than sorry.

You bet...and I would leave an IOU or at the very least keep track of what my family took...and make sure that as soon as we were on our feet we would begin paying back the debt...that we owed to the person who saved our lives by not killing us for taking food and water or clothing etc
But drugs to get high on....Valium,Oxycontin,Demerol, and VIAGRA?...give me a break...
50" Plasma TVs,....car stereos?....not to mention killing a police officer who tried to stop such theft?...
nope...shoot the looters..and the looting will stop...
Private property the right to it and to be safe and secure in our property and possessions is the heart of American's freedom..
Shoot the looters, hang their corpses from lamposts and place signs around their necks..."GOOD LOOOTER"
Funny how the anti personal defense, anti war,pro aborts, and right to die folks are so worried about scum bags lives

Managers of stores selling firearms and/or ammo should lock away all that merchandise as soon as it's apparent that a mega-storm is going to hit.
