My Two Cents on New Orleans and Katrina (Vanity)

Posted on 09/02/2005 6:18:46 PM PDT by carrier-aviator

I've been reading, listening, and watching the events on the Gulf Coast unfold all week. I need to vent.

GLOBAL WARMING: The lefties, especially that lunatic Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. are blaming the President for not sending the Kyoto Accord to the Senate. Al Gore initialed the document in 1996, and carried it back to the U.S. Clinton never sent it to the Senate though, as the Senators, by a vote of 95-0, told him it would be dead on arrival if he did. So, why is Bush blamed for emulating the actions of the esteemed, impeached, fornicating ex-democrat President?

Help me out here. The global warming theorists have long said the following: "the greenhouse gases will warm the atmosphere, melting the ice caps, COOLING the oceans, causing great climate change" (remember that idiotic movie, "The Day After Tomorrow," from last year where the earth, essentially froze, because of this?). Yet Kennedy and the other enviro-kooks say it was an overly warm ocean and Gulf of Mexico that fueled Katrina. Which is it? Cool oceans or warm oceans? If we follow the long-held theories of these nuts, then global warming will cool the oceans and REDUCE hurricane intensity.

THE CHRONOLOGY: The Hurricane battered the Gulf Coast on Monday morning and afternoon. New Orleans escaped the worst of it. No significant flooding. No need for massive federal help (if any place needed the help at that point it was Mississippi). CNN proclaimed that NOLA had "dodged a bullet." It wasn't 'til Tuesday that the levee burst.

RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CITY AND STATE: The foul-mouthed democrat mayor ordered evacuation. He, more than anyone, knew that some of the city's residents didn't have the means to get out. So, what did he do? He opened the Superdome to a small fraction of them. He could've rented busses to haul them all to safety, but he didn't. I guess he expected President Bush to do that. He could have provided food, water, toilet paper, and port-a-potties to the Superdome. But, he didn't. I guess the racist President Bush prevented the mayor from issuing that order. The inept democrat governor could have had the National Guard standing by, but she didn't. I guess the security of a city 1000 miles from Washington is the responsibility of the federal government and of President Bush personally.

THE SUPER DOME: I have read of murders, rapes, sex, drugs, and theft there (not to mention feces everywhere). I presume this is the fault of the President, as well?

THE RACIAL ISSUE: When I first heard that politicians were mentioning the "racial aspect," I thought, "Wow, someone has the guts to point out that all the looters are black." But, no, that wasn't the racial issue that was mentioned. It was the fact that the evil President Bush knew that blacks were suffering, causing him to purposely delay the provision of aid. Of course, if the black mayor truly cared for his people he would have ensured they had been hauled to safety. The lefty establishment whined that "the poor and the blacks were disproportionately affected." Rocket science there...the population is 67% black, so, of course blacks were disproportionately affected. If a natural disaster had struck Fargo, ND, I guarantee that white people would have been disproportionately affected. One other note I heard on the radio: one reason why so many residents in NOLA are poor and carless is because most of that black population consists of single mothers and their children. If you don't want to be poor, and in a situation where you can't react to unexpected events, don't have children out of wedlock.

LOOTING: We haven't seen Law Enforcement shoot at looters since the riots of the late 60s. Of course, the reason is racial. Almost ALL looting in the U.S. since that era has been by blacks. But, society dares not establish order and protect property by shooting blacks. It would be racist. Yeah right.

THE LEVEE: The left is howling that evil President Bush cut levee funding by some $70 million during his presidency. Well, he didn't cut anything. He reduced the rate of growth. Of course, it is the city of New Orleans that depends on the levees. How much did it spend? How much did the state spend? NOLA has 700,000 people. To have made up for that $70 million shortfall the city government could have taxed each of its residents an average of $20 per resident per year for the five years of the Bush presidency. Or it could have raised the tourist or booze or gambling tax. But, it, evidently, chose to depend totally on the feds. Is there NO responsibility at the local level?

BEING READY: "Bush was unprepared," is the cry of the left. Should he have had helicopters, and cargo planes on the tarmac at the NOLA airport (only to be blown apart by the wind)? Should he have had equipment and tents and supplies pre-positioned, only to be blown away by the wind? Rescuers MUST stay away from the scene, and when the NATURAL phenomenon has passed, they can then approach the damaged area. USAF jets could land no closer than 150 miles from NOLA, then they had to take their aid and supplies overland some 150 miles over battered roads, and over the few remaining bridges to NOLA. This takes time. Of course, in the instant world of 24/7 news, anything but instant reaction is deemed inadequate. The news people know this but don't say it. And the lefties know it too, yet decry Bush's supposed ineptitude (for political gain, of course).

Alright, I'm done. Comments?

Great comments. But I would have also added that someone in New Orleans closed the airport Sunday morning, when I think there still could have been six to eight hours of possible flying time to get tourists out of the city. That was not the president's decision, and I didn't hear any Louisiana officials complaining about it back then. I've been hearing since hurricane Betsy in 1965 that New Orleans was an accident waiting to happen, and that this day would come sooner or later. There is plenty of blame to go around, but fury has nothing to do with compassion and fingerpointing doesn't feed or clothe anyone.

So brilliant I'd even let you fly hi-tech airplanes off large naval vessels.

Big deal, a monkey could do that.

Getting them back ON to the large naval vessels is what matters...

You give 'even the dumbest of Democrat voters' waaaaaay too much credit. I doubt if *any* Democrat is voted out of office in future elections.

I'm reading a NO blog and am amazed at the number of people there, and in other parts of the country, who think Nagin is a hero. They don't seem to be holding him responsible for anything. So his ruse of throwing blame to deflect his own seems to be working. I predict he'll be re-elected.

Oh, the blog is at www.neworleans.metblogs.com

I worked for SBC for 30 years, and went through a couple of hurricanes. The company sent the trucks(and us) out of harms way until the blow was over. Sometimes we were back in town while the wind was still blowing 60 -70mph. We all had full tanks of gas and a control center situation to start rebuilding. During Alecia, we were actually replacing drops and such with winds and rain still blowing very hard. The point is, every business has a contingency plan BEFORE the storm. Thats why the lights get back on quickly, and dial tone is provided as fast as humanly possible. The oil companies do the same with their rigs and their refineries. It's about service and money. We can't bill them if they don't have service. The government is much different. You will pay taxes anyway.

The Government, OTOH, is just overpaid morons waiting for the next election to legitimize their ongoing thievery. The Mayor, City councilman, School Board official, ANYBODY, even the bus barn supervisor, could have ordered the buses to travel west for 100 miles then turn around and come back. The city could have commandeered them to pick up the old and sick, but even leaving empty would have been better than losing 500 buses at 130k a pop. You don't need the president to commandeer school buses. IN fact a point that must be stressed is, it is illegal for the Feds to force anything on a state without them approving. That's IN THE CONSTITUTION! Of course school officials wouldn't know that.

The Bus thing is just one aspect of the problems I see here. These guys have disaster simulations all the time. The plan is there already. Why wasn't it carried out? BUSH CAN'T JUST BARGE IN AND TAKE OVER A STATE. He doesn't have the authority. The telling thing here was the fact that they knew at least 48hrs ahead of time it was a category 4 or 5 and NO was rigged for 3 or under. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MANDATORY EVACUATION 2 DAYS BEFORE THE STORM HIT. They could have asked for voluntary evac even before that. This "blame Bush at all cost" is pi$$ing me off big time. If it turns out the La governor asked for help, and Bush drug his feet, that would be different. But you can see from the get go, La officials layed down and waited for the sugar tit from DC to do THEIR jobs for them.

THE CHRONOLOGY: The Hurricane battered the Gulf Coast on Monday morning
What I miss in your chronology is the timing of the decision to evacuate. And didn't Bush recommend the decision to evacuate to the mayor of NO?

And if so, what would the caterwaulers have said about Bush's "arrogant" decision to push an unnecessary evacuation if in fact the levee had happened to hold, as obviously it nearly did?! Whatever Big Journalism says about Republicans is a second guess. And as this clearly shows Big Journalism and the Democratic Party are joined at the hip; there is only a distinction between them, not a difference.

Democrats are second guessers rather than leaders. They no longer even nominate leaders for president!

Lousy, second guessing critics. Every man Jack of them.

It's the dirty little secret of socialism: its acolytes condemn the present "distribution of wealth but propose a program which will merely average out present misery while precluding the development of future wealth. All socialists ever do is second guess people who try to accomplish things. They are in it to aggrandize themselves, arrogating the credit for things that other people did.

I'll admit that I am getting O'Reilly a day late because I live in England; however, it was interesting to note that through a little investigating, it's been noted that the governor of LA did nothing to be proactive to get the troops there before the hurricane hit. The president released funds and permission for help two days before Katrina. So, in my estimation if anyone is to have rocks thrown at them, it should be the governor of Louisiana and the mayor of NO, not the president.

The governor, from what I understand, had five days before the hurricane to do something, but instead she froze and did nothing.

That's one thing that bugs me - whatever happened to our C-5 cargo planes?! They were built to be capable of landing on a short, unprepared field.

IIRC the AF soon decided that that mission was too much wear and tear on the airframes - but it certainly seemed like this was an emergency. Maybe they coulda landed one on an expressway somewhere - and, if it couldn't take off again, just guarded it in place 'til we could tow it.
