Study: Sun's Changes to Blame for Part of Global Warming
LiveScience ^ | Sept. 30, 2005 | Robert Roy Britt

Increased output from the Sun might be to blame for 10 to 30 percent of global warming that has been measured in the past 20 years, according to a new report.

Increased emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases still play a role, the scientists say.

But climate models of global warming should be corrected to better account for changes in solar activity, according to Nicola Scafetta and Bruce West of Duke University.

The findings were published online this week by the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Scientists agree the planet is warming. Effects are evident in melting glaciers and reductions in the amount of frozen ground around the planet.

The new study is based in part on Columbia University research from 2003 in which scientists found errors in how data on solar brightness is interpreted. A gap in data, owing to satellites not being deployed after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, were filled by less accurate data from other satellites, Scafetta says.

The Duke analyses examined solar changes over 22 years versus 11 years used in previous studies. The cooling effect of volcanoes and cyclical shifts in ocean currents can have a greater negative impact on the accuracy of shorter data periods.

"The Sun may have minimally contributed about 10 to 30 percent of the 1980-2002 global surface warming," the researchers said in a statement today.

Many questions remain, however. For example, scientists do not have a good grasp of how much Earth absorbs or reflects sunlight.

"We don't know what the Sun will do in the future," Scafetta says. "For now, if our analysis is correct, I think it is important to correct the climate models so that they include reliable sensitivity to solar activity. Once that is done, then it will be possible to better understand what has happened during the past hundred years."

New studies throw cold water on warming theory .....

Two major new studies, as well as temperature readings from precise satellite measurements, have produced strong new evidence the Earth is not warming. The new information has sent global alarmists into confusion and has vindicated prior studies long ignored by the mainstream media.

Nature study shows dramatic Antarctic cooling .....

On January 14, Nature magazine published the results of a comprehensive study, involving all regions of the Antarctic continent, revealing that Antarctica has been cooling, dramatically, for the past 20 years.

Prior reports of an Antarctic meltdown had been largely based on temperature readings on a small peninsula where most Antarctic science stations are located. However, the new study's authors began to suspect warming on the peninsula was a localized phenomenon, caused by a recent change in regional wind and sea patterns, when visits to other parts of the continent showed no sign of warming.

"A lot of people [co-authors] in the paper have been working in the valleys since the mid-'80s, and at first it seemed that lake levels were going up," reported Peter Doran, a University of Chicago at Illinois scientist and lead author of the study.

There is also a circumpolar antarctic current that has about a 60 year cycle that affects Antarctica and the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific oceans due to its connection to all three.

Such a confusing amount of facts for simple minded left-wing wacko's to keep track of. They'd rather it was so simple as to blame us.

"HUMMMM, how do the enviros protest the sun."

By driving a rubber zodiac around it of course. Then it melts and they all fall down.

Send me $100,000,000 and I will conduct global tests to see if the sun heats things.

Here's a link to the same story. There was no easy way to just include the interesting links without stripping out a ton of code and unrelated text.

I thought this was the most interesting link. Scientists Clueless over Sun's Effect on Earth

That Famous Equation and You This is one of the best explanations of Einstein's derivation of relativity and the relation between energy and mass that you're likely to find. It was on the NY Times OpEd page, and it was their most Emailed story when I last looked. I am hoping that someone, with an un blemished posting record, posts it in the editorial sidebar. If I did it, I might be banned for good.

I move for the immediate passage of a Solar Protocol, binding on all nations, restricting the amount of sun each may use daily.

We can punish the more flagrant "warmth hoarders," by banning blacktop.

Hmmm....maybe some of the vanished civilizations doomed themselves by erecting pyramids and other buildings.

And, they're reporting warming on Mars too. I guess those Mars Rovers are burning fossil fuel.
