Parents Sue After 14-Year-Old Daughter Died with Birth Control Patch
Life Site News.net ^ | 11.21.05 | Hilary White

When the parents of 14 year-old Alycia Brown of La Crosse Wisconsin found out their daughter was sexually active, they did what the modern culture told them was the right thing to do; they put her on birth control, choosing the popular hormonal patch instead of the Pill. When on May 7, 2004, Alycia died suddenly of blood clots in her lower pelvis Michael and Lorie Brown decided to sue the deadly drug's manufacturer in the hopes of having it taken off the market.

The patch, which releases a dose of contraceptive hormones into a woman's blood stream through the skin, has been responsible for at least 17 deaths in women age 17 to 30 since its release in 2002, according to the US Food and Drug Administration.

In September 2004, a study by the FDA revealed 21 "life-threatening" conditions related to the patch such as blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks. The Browns' lawsuit claims the company intentionally withheld information from its own clinical trials and Food and Drug Administration records suggesting the increased risks.

Thus far, Alycia is the youngest of the patch's victims. Her mother told the La Crosse Tribune that the suit is only partly about collecting damages. "More than anything, I want it taken off the market," she said.

"Maybe I'll be able to save a life, if people know what happened to her."

Earlier this month, Ortho-McNeil agreed to improve the warnings on the labels for the patch to include the information that it had possible fatal side effects. The company admitted that the patch exposes women to about 60 percent more estrogen than those using typical birth-control pills.

So rather than engage in a discussion you decide to lash out and attack right from the get go?

A 14 year old girl is DEAD. Think about that for a minute before you post your pious, calloused, trite remarks. They might invite people to lash out at you. Normal kids want to have sex....remember? Her parents screwed up in raising her right, protecting her, and instilling in her stronger core values. Save the holier-than-thou routine for them, not a dead 14-year-old kid who obviously didn't know any better.

Now go back to work on your profile page. You obviously have waaaaaay too much time on your hands.

I think MamaTexan means she's a very aware parent who keeps her kids close to home and nurtured.

Thank you, Ma'am. That was exactly what I was saying.

Our girls are only a couple years younger than this poor child was. Several years ago, my husband and I decided to raise our children in the country.

Out here, there's loads of opportunity to have 'the talk' with your kids.

From observing nature, they know mating is a part of life and that pregnancy isn't a consequence of sex, it's the purpose of it.

Wow. Have you completely misundderstood my intent, but I can see how that may have occurred. Post # 202 is more reflective of my actual feelings, rather then the play on words with her city, which I made.

Why raise an issue with me that had nothing to do with what I said in the first place?????? >>

I guess it had to do with the title of the thread:

Parents Sue After 14-Year-Old Daughter Died with Birth Control Patch

and you saying on a case-by-case basis.

go figure, eh?

Lots of medications have fatal side effects. I think almost everyone I've seen has fatal side effects.

That's what doctors (and pharmacists) are for. They need to look at an individual's medical history and see if they can safely take a medication. They also need to look at drug interactions.

The risks need to be fully explained to a patient beforehand so that they can make an informed decision.

"Got Type II?"

Nope, but my grandfather did. Guess I got lucky on that one.

you know what to warn your daughters about.

Honey, I can not tell you how tickled I am, to have a daughter...they are a blessin' to one crusty ol' a'hole like me.
And they are a delight to 'handle".

Remember the line in the movie...I believe it was called "Murder at the 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, featuring Clint Eastwood? he said something to the like of"...you crossed the line when you decided to attack my little girl" now you have to die...Mercy, sez the bad guy;...just ran out of it, slime...

Well , I am right there next to Clint's character!

Girls are the best!

Everything has possible fatal side effects. I don't think there is a drug known to man that doesn't list death as possible side effect.

Children that are closely supervised usually don't have the chance to become sexually active.

You can never watch them that closely. I can't count the daughters of strict, watchful parents that succumbed in my day. If you can't trust them out of your sight, it's too late, you lost them.

Might be a course of action if she's having sex with an adult. If it's another 14 year old, you'll find that legally he and his family are no more culpable than she and hers.

Speaking as a male who bedded a lot of girls from strict parents, I can say with authority that the watchful parents weren't the successful parents. The ones that succeeded at foiling me, and those like me, were the ones who raised girls that said no, no matter how far out of sight they were from mommy and daddy. Usually these were girls who enjoyed their parents trust. Overly strict parents raised the easiest daughters. You could more easily tweak their rebellion button.

if the parents helped arrange for the patch, they are partly responsible IMO......

17 deaths?....well, its only girls......just move on, nothing to see here...

its the year 2005 and it still is a basic fact that early sexual activity ALWAYS falls heaviest on the young girls.....

there ARE ....after all is said and done... actual VICTIMS of early sexualization..from the ever blessed pornagraphy to the support of the titty restaurants like "hooters" to our raunchy music and raunchy tv and movies....

maybe little Johnny can get away with it, but little Jill can not....

but to go 10 rounds with people that think drugs and prostitution and pornagraphy and and strip clubs etc etc are AOKAY.....well, I can't today because I'm decorating for Christmas..

but, all actions have reactions....all actiions have consequences, and how else are we to explain why a 14 yro is having sex at all, let alone mommmy and daddy getting her birth control for her...

Do you really think because you are restricted that you don't fight back on some level?

I didn't fight back by sleeping around at 14, lady.

You people that think this kind of behavior is inevitable at 14 are just excusing your own incompetence and cowardice as parents. Period. End of discussion.

I tried the patch for about 2 months and I had nothing but trouble. I would break out in the area the patch was, I had breakthrough bleeding and I ALWAYS felt nauseous. Good thing I stopped when I did.

You’ve got to be joking right? I just happened upon this ignorance spewing from your mouth and seriously cannot believe your that iggnorant!!
I was a 29 year old ADULT who upon my doctors recommendation used this patch. I developed bi-lateral pulmonary embolisms in which I stayed in the hospital 8 days in the pulmonary unit. The other patients were 70-80 years of age.. and medically I was in worse shape than any of them. I nearly died.
This drug WILL KILL YOU!! It isn’t anyone’s fault other than JOHNSON AND JOHNSON/Ortho-McNeil. Don’t open your mouth to something YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. Do your research before posting.. or better yet do us all a favor and.. turn those razor blades on yourself!
