United States Marine Corps drill instructor yells at a recruit after wakeup attention detail in Parris Island, South Carolina, January 6, 2005.
The U.S. Army, fresh off missing its latest annual recruiting goal, has launched an unprecedented effort to coax former troops to
sign up again for active-duty military service, officials said on Tuesday. (Shannon Stapleton/Reuters)

WHAT DO YOU MEAN, YOU DON'T LIKE SANDFLEAS? THOSE ARE MARINE SANDFLEAS, AND YOU WILL GIVE THEM ALL THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE! I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOU SCRATCHING THEM IN FORMATION AGAIN! DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?
(Personal note: My training was Army, but my BIL was stationed down at Cherry Point for a while and I was a journalist for a small military paper... so I got a tour of Parris Island besides the normal stuff.
(If I had to trust the life of my daughter or grandchild in the hand of a total stranger, I would do so with a United States Marine Drill Instructor. They are truly the finest of the Corps. Their training is intense and only the best get through. Off duty, they are the kindest and most considerate men and women. And it is no kindness to half-train an 18-year-old and send them into the furnace of battle. Ask our jihadi enemies that.)

One other note: Marine DIs do not swear. They are much more inventive these days.

Did you ever have to give a bug a funeral?
Sarge got busted with that, way back in the day, it was a lovely eulogy...

That's the PC version. The original soundtrack went more like this:
I feel pretty,
Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty and witty and gay!
And I pity
Any girl who isn't me today.
Another perfectly good word hijacked, what was wrong with the Gay '90s (1890)?

No, but my brother (a Force Recon Marine) did. His ant funeral was much admired by his drill sergeant. It was conducted so well that this tenderhearted soul in the Smoky Hat, moved by emotion, was compelled to ask my brother "What sex was the ant?" And so my brother had to exhume the unfortunate invertebrate to verify the sex. He got it wrong, and had to triple check.
My own experience was in pushing Fort Gordon, Georgia, away. I was a smart recruit. I learned from the experiences of others.
Have fun over in the Big Sandbox, Old Sarge.

The Marines slightly exceeded recruiting goals for FY 2005.

I too, was Army and had fisticuffs with the heavy weight champ of Quantico. Back then I had neither fear nor good sense. While I managed to break his nose and knock out a few of his teeth, he knocked me totally out. I was in the hospital for three days. I knew I was in big trouble when he spit his teeth out and smiled. If I'd have had a gun, I'd have shot... myself. It would have been less painful. I never messed with a jarhead after that large can of whoopass. He made me feel... french.

I agree whole heartedly with your comment, though I'm sure that there are members in every branch of the service that would be as trustworthy. That being said, Marine D.I.s tend to be at the top of my list as well.
