Holy cow! It took until 1999 for the NYPD to start using hollowpoints!? Amazing...

"They also are readily available on the black market."
"Anyone with a gun permit can buy the hollow-points in a gun shop."
I am completely confused by this article.
You have to have a gun permit to buy them legally and violent felons don't have gun permits...therefore, violent felons are not buying the hollow points from the legal market.
Simple logic escapes New York. But again, these cop "organizations" are nothing more than liberal groups acting as self appointed spokesmen. LAPD has the same problem.

"Our mission is to stop violent felons," said Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch. "There is no reason for anyone else to have that ability." So then I can expect two of your hollow-point armed officers to come and maintain a 24x7 watch over my life and property? ;)

Some never see a proposed regulation that they don't like. This cannot be regulated. One could buy old-fashioned 38 special lead round-nosed bullets, flatten the nose, deep criss cross the nose, and have bullets that deliver more energy shallow like hollow points. With full metal jacketed rounds the tips can be sawed off. Criminals are the problem, not the guns, knifes, and crow bars they use.

Hornady XTP's rock.
That being said, this author is an idiot. Didn't stop to think that anyone with a drill press and some re-loading equipment can make all the "hollow point" bullts out of FMJ that they want.

Good thinking there Lynchie. Prevent law-abiding citizens from purchasing hollowpoints while allowing criminals to buy them from the trunk of a car.

Um...excuse me? I would like that ability also. Why should I have to waste 3 or four shots when it should only take one. One shot one kill.

1. They are against armor piercing bullets, round nose types
2. they are against expandable ones
Go freaging figure. It's always the same thing. What kills kills and is meant for that. What part of the 2nd amendment they do not understand? There is no P.C. bullet except no bullets, I guess.

Yeah... Better that the bad guys have FMJ bullets to go through body armor.
Just curious, but is mental retardation a requirement for holding a management position within the NYPD?

Cops favor using the hollow-point bullets because they are less likely to pass through a target and ricochet into a fellow cop or bystander. Which is why they are a favored choice for home defense use as well.
