Teens charged after rifle exchange (more zero tolerance at school?)
Finger Lakes Times ^ | Wednesday, January 11, 2006 | By DENISE M. CHAMPAGNE

OVID NY— Two teenagers were charged Tuesday after allegedly having a rifle in the parking lot of South Seneca Central Junior/Senior High School at 7263 Main St.

District Superintendent Janie Nusser said a student came on campus with a rifle in her car to give it to the rifle’s owner who was another student. She said they made the transfer in the school parking lot in violation of board policy and state law.

“I think when students saw the rifle, they were concerned and reported it to adults and we immediately called law enforcement,” Nusser said.

“I think what heightened people’s concerns was the student that was the owner of the gun had been involved in an argument with another student just prior to the transfer. At this time in the investigation, we do not see a connection between the two incidents.”

Nusser said the incident happened at the end of the school day and reports of a lockdown are untrue.

“It’s an ongoing investigation, so for me to give you much information would be premature,” she said.

Nusser would not name the students, but Seneca County sheriff’s deputies charged Jeffrey R. Warne, 17, of 7904 Route 89, Interlaken, and Jessica L. Prindle-Ike, 16, of 8494 Mill St., Lodi, with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Deputies said the .22-caliber rifle was not pointed at anyone during the incident.

The teens were ticketed and are to appear Jan. 30 in Ovid Town Court.

Maybe there's more to this story, but looks to me as if this is simply hysteria.

Except that it's against the law to have a gun on school property.

I don't know. I have heard some absurd situations like someone suspended for a butter knife on the floor of their car after their family hadmoved the weekend before. That IS absurd.

I don't want unsupervised teens with a gun around my kid. It seems like a clear violation of school policy to me.

I used to shoot .22 target rifle at a range IN the High School.

Teens charged after rifle exchange

From the headline, I thought that they had been shooting at each other.

Where I went to HS it was weird if you did not have a rifle in your rear window of your truck

Like it or not, it seems to me that everybody knows that you can't take firearms to school. It may or may not be a stupid law, but there it is.

Besides, what if this was a case of some gangbangers passing firearms in the parking lot? We'd be less upset by an arrest in that case.

If you have kids in school, do make sure they know that it's illegal to take firearms to school, even in the car trunk.

Can school policy trump a constitutional right to bear arms?

When you enter a school yard and leave the USA what country do you enter? the NEA?

But.... Didn't that cause all the students in your school to become homicidal monsters? I mean, just being in the presence of a gun should make a thinking human being shudder with fear! ;-)

So did I. But that was back in the late 1950s. We don't do that any more. That might be stupid, but I also don't want the local young Crips passing guns in the parking lot of the High School near me.

Common sense, I guess, has to prevail.

Does that right (which I fully support) extend to minors? I'm unclear on that.

It was the 70's for me. They still have rifle teams associated with JROTC here in NM, but use precision air rifles (no lead remediation problems, no hearing protection needed, and the range can be a classroom with a cinderblock wall as a backstop in case they miss the pellet trap)

Scholastic shooting programs are the only youth sport that has never had a case of participant or spectator violence documented.

Your point about criminals and gang bangers is completely valid though.

If it doesn't (no language in the bill of rights restricts rights to non-minors but restricts power of the state) what would keep the Libs from raising the legal age to say 65 or 100?

LOL. Try openly carrying your loaded AR-15 to the mall tonight.

Can mall policy trump a constitional right to bear arms?

Get back to me with the results, OK?
