NZ Shark Taggers Issue Fresh Warning - "Taranaki Terror" 19ft Great White Shark

Scientists issued a fresh warning about a great white shark seen cruising Taranaki's coast line last night after attempts to tag it with a satellite tracker failed.

Marine scientist Clinton Duffy and former New Plymouth marine biologist Demian Chapman attempted to tag the terror of the deep with pop-off satellite tags to monitor its movements.

However, during the mission Mr Duffy did see a great white at least 4m long dive out of the water near Seal Rock, off Port Taranaki.

It is the latest of several sightings in the past month, of the shark dubbed the Taranaki Terror.

"We stopped for the sunset and as we were watching I saw a huge white shark almost breach, it almost jumped completely clear of the water off Seal Rock," Mr Duffy said.

"EAT them???? Attack, maybe...I find that hard to swallow, if you'll pardon the pun. Has that ever actually happened?"

It has. Remember, sled dogs are not pets, and are always hungery. Even a pet will eat a dead or unconscious owner when it gets hungery.

Pets - the original, home based recycling system.

I'm not arguing with you; in fact, you're taking up my point.

There is a sentiment I'm getting here that people actually want to try to eliminate all predators from the face of the earth to prove man's dominance. THe idea is laughable, and I can't believe I'm arguing against it, but there you go.

Although debating ecological concepts with someone with such an 'atomistic' view of species as your tormentor does not offer a very amusing prospect.

Well, at least someone agrees with me.

No no no no no.

If you read this guy's post, he said that we should not only eliminate ALL sharks from the face of the Earth, but that we should take it further and eliminate all PREDATORS from the face of the Earth. That's what I got from his posts. At least when I got past the name-calling and accusations of being an "eco-twit."

My comparison of shark/baby was not on the end of the shark and baby, but to the person doing the killing. The idea was that we should wipe out everything that does not serve a purpose of a greater good. My first question was what exactly is a greater good that is worth wiping out everything that does not fall into its service. The baby story is an exaggerated example of such a mentality.

"I still don't know why God made sharks ... or grizzly bears."

To control the population of stupid people. Just a guess.

To control the population of slow runners? - just a thought.

Indeed sharks live an extremely complex life, theres a clue here, given that they’ve been on the planet hundreds of millions of years and we know very little about them, such is the complexity of their lives.
Sharks do prefer high fat, blubber, content, but the ‘mistaken identity’ theory is under question by some of the foremost authorities on shark behaviour, as is the ‘test bite’ theory.
Many ‘experts’ have long since advocted the initial strike is not a ‘test bite’, but simply a ‘crippling’ bite, to render prey dead or unable to protect itself, this makes sense given all apex predators behave in this way.
‘Mistaken Idenity’ - Very unlikely, sharks see very well under water. More likely is that for e.g, when a shark attacks a seal, it lies in the water, not rescued and unable to protect itself. That cant be said for humans, we get bitten and scores of helpers appear on the scene, more often than not are helped out of the water, and thankfully, survive. If left in the water, its almost certain they’d be eaten, theres thousands of accounts online to verify this.

Of course, the real problem is people. A race who’s level of ignorance is only surpassed by their stupidity.
It’s a simple equation. The sea is a vast wilderness, spanning over 90% of the worlds surface, it isn’t a playground for the arrogant and stupid. When you enter that world you run a calculated risk, for herein lies monsters. Most surfers accept and acknowledge that risk, in real world times, after all, its very unlikely to ever happen. Respect nature, it’ll be here long after the human race.
