Russia to meet pledge on air defense system deliveries to Iran

MOSCOW, Feb. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Russia will meet its pledge on deliveries of air defense systems to Iran, a senior official said on Thursday.

Moscow cut a 1 billion-U.S. dollar deal with Tehran in November to supply it with Tor-M1 short-range missiles. Russian officials said these missiles are air defense systems used only to bring down aircraft and guided missiles at low altitudes but cannot strike ground targets.

"As you know, we have a contract on the delivery of anti-aircraft missile systems to Iran. There is no reason not to fulfill this contract," Mikhail Dmitriev, director of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.

Under the deal, Russia will supply up to 30 systems which will be used to defend the most important state and military facilities, above all nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Bushehr, Teheran and in the country's east, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has said the contract was concluded "in strict compliance with Russian laws and Russia's international obligations."

Dmitriev said the Middle East region remains a big regional market where Russia enjoys considerable possibilities for arms export. "We have long enjoyed good partnership relations with the United Arab Emirates, Syria and Egypt," he said.

Russians must hurry up, to deliver those air defence systems on time - before American or Israeli air-raids start (sarcasm)

See this is what I mean. They are no justification for this behavior other than making the US job harder. Doesnt matter, a massive cruise missle strike will saturate their defenses and the system will be destroyed.

.......supply it with Tor-M1 short-range missiles.....

I wonder if they're as accurate as those Russian "scuds" were back in the days of Desert Storm.........

Russia better not ship in boats, otherwise I have some weird feeling that the cargo may either be stolen or the ship scuttled.

In other news one of the ohio subs which was converted to a huge cruis missle battery is back in active server it alone can carry more than 150 tomahawks which are conventional/nuclear capable. So that along with our guidles missle boats and air launched cruis missles from b-52,b1-b's, and B-2 would equal a lot of cruise missle no way any air defense comand and control can survive that. http://www.news.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=22240

As usual, it's most instructive to watch what the Russians do, not what they say.

They pay lip service to "diplomatic solutions," but at heart they love the dictators and terrorists.

It really feels like they are less angered by Chechens murdering their children than the fact that they aren't killing Americans instead.

Russia is most definitely NOT our friend. At least their government. Putin is putting his country closer and closer to the old days of the Soviet Guard and we do nothing but talk and act like Russia is our friend. Is their anything we export to them that would hurt them significantly, cuz there should seriously be an embargo, immediately.

Yep. But - as you can see - the facts are not interesting for that airbrain.

That was a Chinese source, which means, that those facts DON'T EXIST.

OMG, now I must be expecting some peremptory revenge.
Probably some "news" about a Polish shoplifter detained in Chicago. Or something like that
