Obviously, the only appropriate thing to do is to put on a dirty nightgown, dance the oogieboogie, chant "We love God and Jesus is his prophet" and burn down the university.

Crapp like these cartoons are very poor taste, of course. However, I don't see anything in the Constitution outlawing poor taste. My opinion is when someone does something this outrageous, they are begging for attention--maybe their 15 minutes of fame.
If everyone would just ignore this nonsense, it would soon stop. I sure hope the press doesn't make a big deal out of it.
Done is done--ignore it.

"... how to balance First Amendment rights while maintaining good taste ..." Which is similar to wading through mud without getting your clothes dirty. Face it, you either have free speech, or you don't. Whatever limits you put on it, "good taste" or not, are simply the camel's nose under the tent.
Personally, I really dislike "Dick Tracy," but I don't have to read it.
Images and ideas in "poor taste" are the burning paper bag on the front steps. Be careful how you react.

Okay, I'm a Christian, and as I read the descriptions of the cartoons, I find them not so much offensive as just plain stupid.

I just love it when non-Christians speak the name of Jesus. They have no idea what they're doing.

"One cartoon, a parody of the famous painting of dogs playing poker, is an equal opportunity offender. It shows leaders of four religious groups (Muhammad, Buddha, Jesus and Vishnu) playing poker with the devil in a battle for souls."< Little do they know, some churches actually pass that view off as serious theology!

He made a great point. You haven't seen a single Christian country recall their ambassadors over this. You haven't seen a single person die. The cartoonist doesn't have a million dollar bounty on his head. He made a very good point, IMO just not the one he thought he was making.
To: High Cotton
Somehow I doubt they printed the mohamed cartoons.
