You know, I've noticed that most ill-behaved children have ill-behaved parents.

absolutely. when their nasty little brats misbehave and you look at the parents with that plaintiff, "please do something" look, they just think you're nuts because their kid is such a little darling to them. people raise what they are, and most people suck.

Dead on. I don't hate children, I hate their trailer-trash parents.

So true. I'll take it a step further and add that the main fault of bad parenting is the reluctance to exercise authority consistenly.

Amen.

Modern Baby Boomer parents aren't parents anymore, they want to be their kid's "friends."

I love kids, don't have any of my own, but have loved and cared for many. My conclusion is kids want discipline.

I've had kids destroy my property while their parents explain away their behavior as "Well, he is just trying to express himself."

I tell the parent that (on my property) precious doesn't express himself at my expense. And if he does, parent will pay for the damage.

Also, I discovered, many years ago, a good way to stop a temper tantrum in a store. When the kid is screaming "I WANT THAT TOY," simply drop to the ground, contort your face, and scream "I want a Mercedes, I want a new house, I want a cruise," and scream it to the top of your lungs, just like the kid.

EVERY time I've used that tactic the kid gets embarrassed, shuts up, and ends the tantrum, in fact begs me to quit and leave the toy department.

Of course, that might be because everybody is staring at me/us :)

Incisive observation! Parents beget children who are destined to be like them. If the parents have no regard for other's rights, the children will have no regard for the rights of others.

My wife and I were in a store the other day and there was this little boy who kept shrieking. There was no reason for his behavior. He wasn't crying or in distress of any kind. His parents appeared to be oblivious to his behavior; not to everyone else in the store though. We finally just walked out to give our ears a rest.

"You know, I've noticed that most ill-behaved children have ill-behaved parents."

All kids are ill-behaved once in awhile, even those with the best of parents. I would venture to say that the vast majority of parents do NOT think it's cute, and are desperately trying to curb the bad behavior without causing a major scene.

Granted, there are some really bad kids and some really bad parents, but there are also some grown-ups who think that the world revolves around them and that they are entitled to every experience, whether it be their dinner at Pizza Hut or their 45 minutes on an airplane, going exactly their way.

I once had a woman turn around and F me on a flight because my baby was crying-meanwhile rows of seats in other parts of the plane sat empty but rather than move she opted to scream at me while I desperately tried to quiet and comfort my child. At least kids have the excuse that they are not yet capable of always controlling their behavior. IMO many adults are every bit as ill-behaved as children, what's their excuse?

That's the ticket - it's not the little brats fault - it's mommy and daddy who won't raise their children properly.

Any kid is going to act like a monster if no one stops them - it's human nature. The problem is these parents who will not discipline their kids or teach them how to act in public.

I've asked some of these parents, "What would your mother have done to you if you spoke to her like that?" The answer is usually, "She would have beat the living tar out of me." When I ask the logical follow-up question, "Then why are you not beating the tar out of your little monster?", they usually reply, "I don't believe in spanking a child."

My response to that is, "Then let me do it!"

If what you say is true--which I doubt--then 99% of all parents are bad, and the other 1% of kids are zombies or vegetables. Give me a kid with spirit any day.

When they become older, it is the glory of youth to experiment, to think, to question elders and "revealed" truth, to determine their own way with education passed on to them. Kids are extremely good at detecting hypocrisy. Bless them, they keep all of us on our toes.
