Seriously, I have lost my ability to post calmly on these threads.
I am better off staying away.
I refuse to get baited.

socalpol attended a counter protest today in either downtown SD or on 6th St. near Balboa Park.
She told me the ugly details in FR mail.
I can only hope San Diegans get MAD.

Of course the organizers are calling for the use of American flags. They saw the backlash and know they won't get far with those whose states aren't facing critical problems YET (oh, but you will soon enough, folks!)

But they're going to find out people aren't as stupid as they might think. The initial protest have already happened. That bell can't be un-rung.

NO AMNESTY.

"My father was born in Mexico," said marcher Mary Gonzales. "He came here. He became a citizen and joined the army. He fought in the war. And I am proud to have become an American citizen, and I want everyone to be able to have the right to do that."

Don't think we have room for everyone.

Our politicians are going to cave on this issue. IMHO, we can shut up and take it, have a war or make Mexico's invasion backfire. Mexicans in America should be taught how little Mexican power holders care for them. The U.S. needs to overthrow Mexico by using those it sent to invade us. We should take it over and make two new states. North and South Mexico.

I guess we know where the Bush family stands on the subject, now don't we?

Yes. It's quite clear.

THE "NEW AMERICAN"

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. The only reason they seem to go the illegal route is because they can`t afford the money it takes to go legal, I really don`t think it is the learning the English part that prevents them.

You're not from a border state, are you. New York doesn't have CLUE what's going on in Texas.

Many of these illegals will pay thousands of dollars to a "mule" to bring them across safely. Once here, they sign up with their fake IDs and SS cards (again, costing hundreds of dollars) to get all the benefits they can grab. And then they demand the schools, businesses and government offices provide Spanish speakers, because they have no interest in learning English.

Many, many, many do NOT want to come just to get a job. They come just to get the free benefits. Having an anchor baby just cements their ability to stay.

And who pays for all these housing subsidies, free breakfast and lunch programs, free education for the children, free medical care for the whole family (and since they don't pay for it, the emergency rooms are overcrowded with the most minor problems), free food, free legal counsel, free prescription drugs, free _____________?

Even those who do get work will usually be paid "under the table," so they aren't paying taxes. Yes, they may pump some money into the economy, but it's negligible compared to the enormous drain on the taxpayers. And those who DO pay taxes got their jobs with false documents, yet another crime.

And speaking of crime...although less than 1% of the population, 30% of prisoners in the federal penal system are illegals. In border states, the percentage of illegals in the state prison systems is staggering. And that's just the ones who are caught and prosecuted.

It's not just a "compassion" issue. It's a safety issue, a national sovereignty issue, an allegiance issue, a rule-of-law issue, a property-rights issue, an ethics issue, an economic issue, etc.

I realize you don't support the in-your-face propaganda evidenced in some of the marches. But really, law-breaking is law-breaking. We cannot, must not, reward this behavior.

And the businesses who profit from these low-paid workers MUST, MUST be prosecuted. The laws are on the book, but they are not enforced. There is no disincentive to the businesses, and a giant benefit: profit margins. This has to stop, immediately. The law must be enforced and the penalties so staggering that businesses will cease hiring illegals. A $200 fine is laughable to a company like Tyson Foods -- not that they've ever paid it. Seizing their assets and throwing them in jail for a year or two might make a difference in their attitude.

It'll be interesting to see the tone in today's demonstrations, now that the PR spin doctors (and John McCain) have advised the crowds to act more "American" to gain sympathy.

You ever been to Mexico? I mean really into the enterior outside of the show and tell places?

It is a third world hell hole for the most part and to annex it as you suggest would be the gretest drain on this economy in history. They would ALL be citizes then, and legal, and they would all immediately qualify for welfare.

We would lower our own standard of living by half (or more) trying to fund it, and we would ensure the democratic party was in power for generations.

Sorry, the medicine you propose is much worse than the current ill.

We can enforce our laws. If we immediately became firm with the firms hiring the illegals, and began wholesale deporting hundreds of thousands, the rest would go home on their own...at leat most of them. You would be left with the criminal element who we need to route out anyway.

In addition, if the program said in essence...if you are here illeally and volunteer to report at a border station or INS office for deportation, you will be sent home, but we will accept you immigration application from Mexico in line with everyone else when you apply. However, if you do not, and we catch you, then we will incarcerate you for a time and you will be forcibly depoted thereafter with DNA identification retained and you will NEVER be eligible for immiration to the US.

We will take a hit to the n economy...but we have taken hits before. That is better than letting the invasion and illegality continue.

Those are my thoughts.

those two groups are not going to be deported under any circumstances - we have to face some realities here. what are you going to do, orphan their american citizen children? force them to sell their homes?

all I am saying is, if a decent compromise could be offered - that had some real border security and employer sanctions, legalizing those two segments as part of a deal would be OK with me.

remember, the US still needs legal immigration because we have declining birth rates and have had a 30 year abortion frenzy.

Okay, let's say we do legalize 20 million illegals. Please tell me how we keep them from bringing over their immediate family members like every other legal citizen can, or do you propose we bring them in as well?

What you are asking me to sign on to, is making legal between 15 and 30 million people, then signing off on them bringing in anywhere from 40 to 80 million more.

There's no way in hell I'm buying off on that scenario. You can forget it right now.

Illegal immigrants need to go home and take their children with them. There is a fairly stong debate about whether those kids are actually citizens or not. They've been treated that way, but as I understand it the 14th isn't as clear on that topic as some have been lead to believe.

I did not bring those parents and children here. I am not responsible for whatever hardships they face as they get their arses kicked over our southern border.

Those illegal aliens can be free from the penalites of our immigration laws, when they abide by them.

I didn't create this mess. They did.

I think you're right on point with your comments. We don't want Mexico. Mexico should right it's own ship of state. Besides, I wouldn't want to deny the Mexican citizens their own nation any more than I would want them to deny us ours.

20 million? no, nowhere near that number have US citizen children and their own homes. those are the only two segments I would put on the path to legal status - as part of a deal that offered border security and employer sanctions. none of this "you've been here for 5 years, show us your pay stubs, and you're in" nonsense.

the folks you want to flow back - are single males who come here only to work and send money back, who engage in crimes, who live 30-40 men to a 4 room house. those are the ones we want to dis-incentivize to remain.
