A new report submitted to the Dutch government has sparked controversy by arguing that Islam does not conflict with either human rights or Dutch values. Islam has been a hot topic in the Netherlands since the killing of a controversial film-maker, Theo van Gogh, by a young Muslim in 2004.
In a country traditionally seen as one of the most liberal and tolerant in Europe, Islam and Muslims are now viewed with suspicion.
The report is the fruit of three years' work by the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), a think-tank in The Hague which advises the government. It examines the evolution of thinking about democracy and human rights in a dozen Muslim countries, ranging from Egypt and Iran to Indonesia. Jan Schoonenboom, a member of the council who supervised the research, says it highlights the variety and dynamism of Islamic activism. While there are radical, jihadi trends, there are also more mainstream Islamic movements which are moving, albeit slowly, towards democratisation.
The report has already been roundly attacked.

Until it is practiced.
#7 too funny!
I needed that.
:)
It changed. Somewhere along the time of Arab nationalism (which masked the phenomenon) the radicals started picking up serious oil money and expanding their programs. The Shah was felled by a bunch of Shi'ite nutjobs. And then all of a sudden the crazies were speaking for both branches of the religion.
They will succeed as long as they are not opposed. If there is such a paradigm shift in the West it's pretty tiny on the surface, at least at the moment. Maybe I'm just pessimistic.
I think the Wahhibi movement represents the "Luddites" of the islamic and the moderates (all three of them) are rather modern and on the cusp of change.
If paradigm shifts are violent, this one will prove a real doozy. Funny too that oil money just happened along to provide funding and support for the islamic status quo. Makes me feel like we're pawns in a cosmic game (which I imagine we are).
As I said, I think the march of time always wins, unless the dying paradigm decides to blow the world to smithereens rather than shift to the new paradigm. And for the first time in the history of man, the losing side of a paradigm shift will most likely have that power.
...and it certainly won't when Holland becomes dominant Islam.
Dutch values.
Let me envision them.
Pro-abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, prostitution, atheism.
They have no values so the muslims, firmly entrenched in Dutch society, will eat their lunch!
Watch out America! You're next!
And this is a bad thing? I don't think so.
No, it is simply rationalization by liberals steeped in modernity, who lack what Dutchmen had 400 years ago - namely, cajones.
Hmm. That remind me. How long before some Islamist blows up the dikes? (That may have a double meaning.)
Hmmm...sounds like they traded ballen for Baal

Yeah, it's getting crazier here by the day. But the good thing is that not too many people take this report seriously
.
What I think is increadably blind by the Dutch is that Ms Hirsi Ali was raised as a muslim.
And they would rather listen to themsleves debating the issue than listen to some one who knows.
"There are none so blind as those who will not see."
Dutch people are not.... very politically correct... in my humble experience.. but they are not generally prejudiced, despite their political incorrectness...
There are other Euros who are very careful to be outwardly politically correct... but in fact harbour deep xenophobia.
Youre right, I dont know much about Islam, and I probably should focus less on all the negative critiques and literature written about the religion lately, but its difficult to stay open-minded when there are so many reaffirmations of the negative. I am done making excuses for the people who cheered on American streets when terrorists struck the twin towers killing thousands of innocent men and women. I am done trying to rationalize why the majority of Pakistanis and citizens of other Islamic countries support Osama bin Laden. I am sick of men and women using the name of my God as they blow themselves (and others) up. I am disgusted by the hateful words and writings during the cartoon protests, where non-Muslims were threatened to be beheaded. I am tired of hearing about women being murdered by their own families because they were raped and little girls being forced into marriages where they are routinely beaten and terrorized by their husbands. Im appalled by despicable groups like the Taliban who routinely raped women, cut off their breasts and left them to bleed to death, or how they mutilated children and infants by severing their limbs and leaving them for dead, or how in some countries, Christian children are beheaded on their way home from school.
Maybe Islam in its purest form is a wonderful religion, but until there are large-scale denunciations of the atrocities that happen in the name of the religion by Muslims across the world, it will not be realized. Its unfortunate because I dont believe most Muslims are bad people, but as terrorism continues to escalate, they will be labeled as hateful and bloodthirsty because of the lack of condemnation on their part.
He looks just like His Majesty, Prince Charles The Insipid!
Cha ching! LOL !!
