Ithaca rallies for (illegal) immigrants

ITHACA — Standing just five feet tall, Cornell student and Mexican immigrant Tania Penafort seemed dwarfed by the large “No Human Is Illegal” banner hanging Monday in the Bernie Milton Pavilion at the Immigrant Rights Rally on The Commons.

Yet she stood in front of it and spoke, along with several others, including Ithaca Mayor Carolyn Peterson, about the plight of immigrants, illegal and otherwise, in America.

The rally, held in conjunction with national immigrant rights rallies, was organized by a local coalition of groups, including the Latino Civic Association of Tompkins County, Immigrant Rights Center, Catholic Charities of Tompkins-Tioga Counties, Ithaca Asian-American Association and the Farmworker Advocacy Coalition.

“Republicans in Congress can't decide whom to pander to - the corporations, or the xenophobes,” said Dan Lamb, a representative of Congressman Maurice Hinchey.

“It's this group that passed this harsh [Sensenbrenner] bill,” he said. “Creating a police state is no substitute for immigration reform.”

Hinchey advocates creating paths to citizenship for immigrants and giving more resources, like funding to hire lawyers and caseworkers to meet the backlog of immigration cases, to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Lamb said.

The mention of DHS drew some boos from the crowd.

By making it illegal to assist immigrants, the Sensenbrenner Bill criminalizes organizations that provide essential services to people of all backgrounds, explained Rene Funke, co-director of the Samaritan Center of Catholic Charities of Tompkins-Tioga Counties.

In her speech, Funke said Catholic Charities of Tompkins-Tioga Counties would continue their work even if the Sensenbrenner Bill is passed.

Mary Jo Dudley, director of the Cornell Migrant Program spoke about the estimated 40,000 to 60,000 farm workers in New York state.

“It is estimated that 75 percent of these farm workers are unauthorized to work in the United States,” she said.

“The farm workers are keeping agriculture alive in New York state. This is one place where farmers and farm workers agree that something must be done about this situation.”

Under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Dudley later explained, the United States subsidized domestic corn production and put Mexican corn farmers out of business.

“Many people who were subsistence corn farmers can no longer live on corn, so they come here,” she said. “The immigrant problem is connected to our policies.”

I don't believe the Sensenbrenner bill made it illegal to give humanitarian aid to anyone. Sounds like a deliberate misinterpretation of the bill, to me.

I think that I've seen this picture before...wasn't it from one of the antiwar rallies last year?

I remember because the ugly girl with the copious armpit hair reminded of why I could never, ever be a feminist!

Hey folks, just saw these 2 posts at SteinReport.com, under the article dated May 02, 2006 "Tancredo Says Protests Triggering Backlash"...here is the 1st post:

"As a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1990-1994, I can honestly tell you what is coming. If what you have seen so far has frightened you, the next phase of what you are about to see will frighten you literally to death - into oblivion.

I've seen the hatred for the United States. As a member of various military intelligence battalions during the 1990's I've heard my share of planned takeovers of all lands within the continental United States of America!!

One such group is La Raza and their pressure to seize our border states for the creation of a "New Mestizo Nation" called Aztlan.

If you truly want this country spared, I have developed a form letter for you and as many other people as you can get to send it to Senators Tancredo and Lott, as well as to your own Congressmen and Senators.

Our Congress and Senate need an ultimatum from the people. Visit the following link which will take you to my forum post. The post is the letter I am asking MILLIONS to send in!

This isn't like any other letter you have seen. This is the ultimatum which should give your representatives nightmares at night for not heeding the desires of the people sooner.

I look forward to seeing your letter hitting their desks or email boxes!!

Pro Patri Vigilans!

Death to Aztlan!!

So, what do you folks think of this comment at SteinReport.com? Here is the 2nd post:

"I can not believe what is happening to our country.
I work in an underserved area as a physician and I know first hand the attitude of many illegal immigrants in this country. They have no respect for this nation and it's people. Please America, stop this. Our government seems to not care about us. Please stand up!

In Los Angeles, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide
(which total 1,200 to 1,500) target illegal aliens. Up to two-thirds
of all fugitive felony warrants (17,000) are for illegal aliens.

A confidential California Department of Justice study reported in
1995 that 60 percent of the 20,000-strong 18th Street Gang in southern
California is illegal; police officers say the proportion is actually much greater. The bloody gang collaborates with the Mexican Mafia,
the dominant force in California prisons, on complex drug-distribution
(contd)
