(CBS/AP) Washington is abuzz this morning with questions about Senator Edward Kennedy's son, Congressman Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., and whether he got special treatment after wrecking his car on Capitol Hill.
Kennedy remained in his office until after 10 p.m., but when he left, he said, "I never asked for any preferential treatment." Asked whether he received it, he said "that's up for the police to decide."
As CBS News correspondent Joie Chen reports, Kennedy says he'd taken a prescription anti-nausea drug that can cause drowsiness, but consumed no alcohol, before crashing his car near the Capitol.
In a statement, Kennedy said the attending physician for Congress had prescribed Phenergan to treat Kennedy's gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines.
Kennedy said that after working Wednesday evening he went home and took "prescribed" amounts of Phenergan and Ambien, another drug that he sometimes takes to fall asleep.
In his statement, Kennedy said he was apparently disoriented from the drugs when he got up a little before 3 a.m. Thursday and drove to the Capitol thinking he needed to be present for a vote.
"Following the last series of votes on Wednesday evening, I returned to my home on Capitol Hill and took the prescribed amount of Phenergan and Ambien," Kennedy said. "Some time around 2:45 a.m., I drove the few blocks to the Capitol Complex believing I needed to vote. Apparently, I was disoriented from the medication."

That would be good. LOL.
Which Kennedy was it that killed a friend, and paralyzed a girl from the neck down in a Jeep accident? Was it this one? My mind is "disoriented" but I think that it happened about 20 years ago or so.
LOL! Didn't know that, but AMAZINGLY convenient. These folks are so crafty. (It helps that his Uncle has about 100 people on staff who are paid by the taxpayers to stick it to the pharmaceutical industry 24/7, of course.) I suppose it's too much to ask for poor Little Paddy to submit to a blood test today to prove what compromised his judgement so severely. Can ambien be detected in the system the day after?
I will have to investigate. I had no idea. He must be on a real binge lately.
I honestly wonder why I bother following the rules.
Exactly
Apparently, he was able to remember those stories in his disoriented state.
I lost all respect for MADD during the Rodney King fiasco. Not a peep from them about King driving recklessly while under the influence of something. Only criticism of the police who tried to stop him.
How different that whole thing might have been if someone's two year old had been killed.
DWT: Driving while Traitor
I'd be suprised if he's charged for anything
Unless they are up to no good. Cheating on spouses or doing illegal activity at 3:00 AM
That was one of Ethel & Bobby's: either Joe or Bobby Jr. It was the one that had the heroin problem as I recall. (It was more trendy to be a victim of heroin addiction back then than being a victim of pharmaceutical industry chicanery.) Alas, I too am a victim of disorientation: I mixed aspirin with my One-a-Day this AM, so I cannot be held responsible for confusing Kennedy ne'er-do-wells.
I'm sure that this is to play off of the recent stories of Ambien causing sleep eating, walking and such in recent weeks.
"The most prescribed sleep medication in the United States may be linked to episodes of sleepwalking and related strange and dangerous behaviors, experts say -- including incidents of nocturnal eating, phone conversations, shoplifting and even driving -- of which the subject has no memory."

The Kennedy's are all pathelogical liars. And drunks
I saw a copy of that here on FR...does anyone know where it is?
These idiots make a mockery out of our judicial system.
Of course he gets special treatment! Special favors for a Kennedy wrecking his car are an American institution!
The K-Klan just happens to have a "family compound" to serve as their out-of-state party playground in Palm Beach County. I'm sure we can count on the ever-scrupulous DA there to start issuing subpoenas to doctors this afternoon.
