Ad Calls for Wal-Mart to Change Principles

One of Wal-Mart's most vocal union-funded critics took out a full-page ad in The New York Times on Tuesday calling on the company to live up to the "moral responsibilities" of being the world's largest private employer by improving wages and health insurance.

Wal-Mart Watch urged the retailer to enter a voluntary deal to improve its business practices, calling it "a handshake with Sam" in reference to Wal-Mart's late founder Sam Walton. That deal would involve seven voluntary commitments, including ensuring quality, affordable health insurance and paying a "family-sustaining wage".

The ad, which the group said cost about $150,000, is the latest volley in a war of words between unions and Wal-Mart that has heated up since last year, when Wal-Mart Watch and another group, WakeUpWalMart.com, were set up by separate unions to wage political-style campaigns against the retailer.

Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. dismissed the ad and said it has no plans to respond to the union group.

The Unions are attempting to get unionized businesses competitive by raising Wal-Marts rates to equal them.

labor unions are leading the political assault to overwhelm the individualistic traditions that made our nation great and to impose socialistic planning and regulation. labor unions are socialisms shock troops.

WHO bankrolls Wal-Mart Watch ?

Do you think if we took out a few full page ads, whoever it is might be persuaded to take their schtick to Mars?

we bankroll the government and I think they employ far more people than Walmart.

I'm more worried what our gubmint does to me than Walmart.

Another 2-bit pro-union diatribe run in a paper that loves unions. God, they are beyond parody.

SOROS would never do that.

It is easier for him to work to undermine the US while living in the US (although having all his finnancial companies registered OUTSIDE the US)

and having the US "news" media identify him as a spreader of "democracy" around the world.

The Walmart bashing from the Communist unions is getting old.

My sister worked at walmart in Michigan. She had healtcare and a retirement plan she was never offered in her previous health care job.

When she moved to Florida last month they had a job for her waiting, and gave her a raise the first day.

Anyone willing to work and show up does quite well at walmart, lazy union slugs however don't have the other 99% of workers willing to protect, and support them.

I'll back the unions on this demand when union leadership lives up to its "moral responsibilities" and stops lining its pockets from the union dues coffers, and pushes all union members to put in a full day's work for a day's pay.

That's not going to happen any time soon.

My local Walmart has openings for 35 cashiers starting at $6.90/hr. Overnight stockers at $6.70/hr. A Walmart employee in the electronics department said they had a fair number of applicants who were hired. They didn't stick around when they discovered they actually had to *work* to keep the job. Too many people expect to be hired and get paid for just showing up in a timely fashion. Many have no interest in actually performing valuable labor in exchange for their compensation. City government employees are among the most slothful of the bunch.

Unions are good. Just look what they did to GM!

And it's just a matter of time before GM defaults on its pension obligations and turns them over to the good old US taxpayer.

I agree, but the low starting rates are only paid during training and trial periods. They sort out those that are worth nothing at all during that time. Those of value advance quite quickly.

I ,for one, am sick and tired of all the carping about Wal-Mart.

You don't HAVE to work there if you don't want to.

Many of the employees are semi-retired or "retired". They have other sources of income. But, some don't have enough to keep up with $3+ gallon gas. Some just missed the activity of being out of the house every day. They have other sources of "health insurance" and they don't need anything from Wal-Mart. It is voluntary on their part. Also, alot of Wal-Mart employees can only work part time due to kids, etc. Some are so poorly educated they cannot work successfully in a smaller Mom-Pop atmosphere. They can be kept busy stocking shelves at Wal-Mart and are off welfare.

The prices at Wal-Mart are a direct reflection of the fact that it is NOT a union store. For the local UNION grocery store to sell me a roll of Viva paper towels for $2.79 each and for Wal-Mart to charge me $1.79 is a perfect example. This isn't a "different product" made especially for Wal-Mart like some appliances in some stores. This is an everyday item. Laundry soap is about half price at Wal-Mart.

The unions have lost their power with their shenanigans. Watch clostly the actions of the SEIU with their high membership of illegal intruder crimmigrants. They have a dog in this fight, don't think otherwise. When Wal-Mart gives up it's independence and gets hammered by the unions, it will be a death knell.

Wal-Mart pays alot of property taxes and sales taxes in whatever county they exist. Washoe County, Nevada didn't want a new Wal-Mart in their lower county. Wal-Mart built right across the line in Douglas County. Now all those sales and property taxes go to Douglas County. 2 Wal-Marts closed in Washoe County. Finally, one new one opened near the 395 bypass. Being penny-wise and pound foolish is the usual action of the politician. They are often heavily influenced by the unions. Follow the money.

Lots of retirees in this country cannot afford to shop in the union grocery stores. Alot of military families cannot afford it either. I live on $929 a month social security. Wal-Mart lets me have a choice.

Leave them alone.

If they close their stores and leave everyone unemployed, you will bitch about that, also.

I can never understand why people who work as cashiers and clerks are never allowed to sit down periodically. It's not just at Walmart....Most department stores have that policy.

That has to be bad on someone's back because the floors in most of those kind of stores are cement or ceramic tile or marble.

I imagine management sits whenever they are tired.

That's NOT going to happen in YOUR lifetime---and I don't even know how old you are!!!!

The unions are facing a major problem when the auto union contracts run out this summer. The fur is going to fly.
I hope when the dust settles that NO ONE is getting paid to NOT WORK---being on "STAND-BY". It is obscene.
