May 24 is the 144th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar (145th in leap years). There are 221 days remaining.

Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and
seemingly useless data.

Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks.

We have links, lots of them.

From the Radixionary

Saccharomyces exiguus

Saccharomyces exiguus is the wild yeast used to make classic San Francisco sourdough bread. this spore grows/lives in the wild, and only in a specific region, (the S.F. bay area) due to climate, weather conditions, geography, and more.

Today's Pancakes Wednesday field trip will take us to The Village, Outer Space, Chicago, Australia, New York, Boston, St. Louis, Arizona Maybe, and California!

Happy Birthday

 1819 Queen Victoria

The longest reigning monarch in UK history

Victoria Day

 Today's Pancakes theme is Pancakes.

Also Pancakes on Wednesdays has a few questions.

 ???  ???  ???  ???

???  ???  ???  ???

Remember, here at

We use the Socratic Method

What is the Socratic method?

It is about questions.

Questions and answers.

We ask questions that nobody else seems to think of.

We pause now for this brief commercial interruption.

Next week on Pancakes on Wednesdays

What does "is" mean?"

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program!

Watch your Ps and Qs

There will be a quiz at the conclusion of this thread.

Is it true that a number ending in 5 cannot be a perfect square unless the digit in the ten's column is a 2?

What ever happened to the first 5 TomKows?

So many Canteen rumors have been spread about the TomKows1-5

Some say that the TomKows were raised by wolves deep in the Caucus Mountains where the family tradition of selling Burkas was first perfected. Others have surmised that the TomKows were the secret purchasers of the Chicago Cubs back in 1909 and that it has been their expertise and management style which has made that team such a success during the last 97 years.

The Chicago Cubs.

  You are Number Six

The Prisoner was one of the most original dramas ever aired on television. Brainchild of producer and star Patrick McGoohan, the series portrays a top-secret government agent who resigns his position only to be immediately abducted and whisked away to an enigmatic, isolated seaside community known only as "The Village." Confined in this resort-like, yet  sinister town, Number 6 (the new "identity" given to him by his captors) soon learns that no one can be trusted, and that those in charge (whose governmental and political affiliations are unknown) will take extreme measures to break him and learn the reasons behind his resignation.

Originally aired in 1967, the 17-episode series begins with Number 6's arrival in The Village, and ends with a two-part finale which many would claim raises more questions than it answers. During the course of the series, Number 6 struggles both to learn the identity of his captors and  to escape from the isolated Village, cut off from the rest of the world by mountains and sea.

Each episode features a new "Number 2" (right-hand man to the unseen Number 1), who brings with him to the Village new ideas and methods for breaking the unyielding Number 6. Servant to the current Number 2 is the mysterious butler, a silent dwarfish man who is the only series regular other than McGoohan.

With its unique mix of action, drama, science fiction and the surreal, and with a message even more relevant today than when it originally aired, The Prisoner is a television classic of the rarest kind.

Who is Number One?

That is correct. The Chicago White Sox are the number one team in MLB!

About a hundred dollars

I'd pay about a hundred dollars just to see TomKow6's face right about now.

In 1934, the U.S. printed its LARGEST DENOMINATION OF PAPER MONEY ever. That was a $100,000 bill. . . featuring a picture of former President WOODROW WILSON!!!

On this Day

1543 - Nicolaus Copernicus published proof of a sun-centered solar system.

A conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in 1504 was observed to differ by 10 days from the predictions of tables based on Ptolemy's work. This, combined with Copernicus' abhorrence of the equant drove him to develop an improved model. Influenced by the work of Regiomontanus (thus also Aristarchus) and neoplatonism (which viewed the Sun as the Godhead and source of all knowledge) he produced his own model. He withheld publication due to his conservative nature and fear of ridicule but was eventually persuaded by Rheticus. Allegedly he received the first copy of his work De revolutionibus orbium (On the revolution of the heavenly spheres) on his deathbed in 1543.

And in typical Pancakes on Wednesday form we  now segue
into this obscurely related fact and feature.

THE WITCH OF AGNESI

Maria Agnesi was born in 1718, the daughter of an Italian mathematics professor at the University of Bologna. She was a child prodigy and the apple of her father's eye......

The Witch of Agnesi. A woman who seized the world's attention with brilliant mathematical work and then gave it all up for a half-century of self-sacrifice. That's not the stuff most witches are made of.........

On this Day

1764 - Bostonian lawyer James Otis denounced "taxation without representation" and called for the colonies to unite in demonstrating their opposition to Britain’s new tax measures.

On this Day

1844 - Samuel F.B. Morse formally opened America's first telegraph line. The first message was sent from Washington, DC, to Baltimore, MD. The message was "What hath God wrought?"

On this Day

1930 - Amy Johnson became the first woman to fly from England to Australia.

Pancakes on Wednesdays  wonders if she flew on Qantas

On this Day

1962 - The officials of the National Football League ruled that halftime of regular season games would be cut to 15 minutes.

In 2005 the NFL ruled that all commercial breaks between game plays must be no longer thanTa Da...15 minutes!

(It always seems much longer to the Pancakes on Wednesdays crew)

On this Day

1994 - The four men convicted of bombing the New York's World Trade Center were each sentenced to 240 years in prison.

We can thank our Government for helping to end attacks against the World Trade Center so effectively with this innovative method of dealing with TERRORISM!

POW is certain that those scoundrels all had a lot of plans for the next 240 years. Some of their victims had plans as well, but the Court record does not indicate anything such as that despite the certainty of POW.

On this Day

1998 - Philadelphia mayor Ed Rendell proclaimed May 24th "Van Halen Day" in Philadelphia.

Hey StarCMC, you Rock. Now Jump!

Van Halen!

Why has the origin of the California Job Case long been shrouded in mystery? What little has been published on it is incorrect — mostly derived from the realm of hearsay, legend or speculation.

This is a California Job Case.

There are so many commentaries even on the Internet concerning the phrase

" Watch your Ps and Qs."

Recognition of the difference between look alike letters p’s and q’s as well as b’s and d’s can be made by their nicks as they are picked out of their compartments. By the same method, wrong fonts can be detected before they are set.

The origin of that old adage is not pints and quarts and the Saint Pauli Girl or others of her ilk.

Shortly after the first mass printing of the Bible by Gutenberg, printing began to evolve throughout Western Civilization. For generations, Printers set type by hand. Each individual spot includes a special piece, including spaces. (Spaces are referred to as "ens" and "ems" depending on the size of the space, for all of you crossword puzzle lovers.) When a printer sets his type, everything appears backwards to him on those little pieces of metal ordinarily lead. Printers had to always remind their apprentices when they were setting print to "Mind your Ps and Qs" because they look so very similar in the job case.

The California Job Case is also an interesting subject for one reason to FReepers because that is what Dan Rather  was possibly using to get his reports published in print during the actual time that  the 1971 forged documents were supposedly constructed.

Printing + Press =  Freedom

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

One of the most renowned printers in American history.

Can We Rejoice?

READ: Habakkuk 3:17-19

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord . . . . The Lord God is my strength. —Habakkuk 3:18-19

I’ll never forget the question our Bible-study leader asked: “What do you fear would test your faith in God the most?” We were studying Habakkuk 3:17-18, where the prophet said that even if God sent suffering or loss, he would still rejoice.

As a single woman in my twenties, my answer was “I don’t know if I could stand the pain of losing my parents.” But I told God that day that even when they died I would rejoice in Him. I found out too soon that it’s easier said than done.

A month later, Dad learned he had heart disease and didn’t have long to live. He didn’t know Jesus as his Savior, so I begged God not to let him die without coming to know Him. Not only did he die that year, so did Mom, who was a believer. I didn’t know if my prayer for Dad was answered. I couldn’t rejoice; I wondered if God had even heard my prayer.

As I wrestled with Him about my questions, I experienced the Lord as my “refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). I found hope in the truth that God, “the Judge of all the earth,” would do what was right by everyone (Genesis 18:25).

We can rejoice—when we are rejoicing in the Lord, our strong refuge and righteous Judge. Anne Cetas-->

Why must I bear this pain? I cannot tell;
I only know my Lord does all things well.
And so I trust in God, my all in all,
For He will bring me through, whate’er befall.  —Smith

God tries our faith so that we may try His faithfulness. Bible in One Year:   1 Chronicles 22-24; John 8:28-59

Artist/Band: Big & Rich
Lyrics for Song: 8th of November
Lyrics for Album: Comin' To Your City

He said goodbye to his momma
As he left South Dakota
To fight for the Red, White, and Blue
He was 19 in green with a new M-16
Just doin' what he had to do.

He was dropped in the jungle
Where the choppers would rumble
With the smell of napalm in the air
Then the sargeant said, "Look up ahead"

And like a dark, evil cloud
1,200 came down
on him and 29 more
They fought for their lives
But most of them died
In the 173rd Airborne

(Chorus)
On the 8th of November,
The angels were cryin'
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire rainin' down
And the Hell all around
There were few men left standin' that day
Saw the eagle fly,
Through a clear, blue sky
1965, the 8th of November

Now hes 58
And his ponytails grey
But the battle still plays in his head
He limps when he walks,
But hes strong when he talks
About the shrapnel they left in leg

He puts on a grey suit
Over his airborne tattoo
He ties it on one time a year
And remembers the fallen,
As he orders a tall one
And swallows it down with his tears

(Chorus)
On the 8th of November,
The angels were cryin'
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire rainin' down
And the Hell all around
There were few men left standin' that day
Saw the eagle fly,
Through a clear, blue sky
1965, the 8th of November

Saw the eagle fly,
Through a clear, blue sky
1965

(Chorus)
On the 8th of November,
The angels were cryin'
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire rainin' down
And the Hell all around
There were few men left standin' that day

(Chorus)
On the 8th of November,
The angels were cryin'
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire rainin' down
And the Hell all around
There were few men left standin' that day
Saw the eagle fly,
Through a clear, blue sky
1965, the 8th of November

The 8th of November
The 8th of November
