Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

have found (in my cyber travels) that what happens over there (generically speaking) affects over here (specifically speaking).

Yeah, that's true - one thing I'd love to do is to prove a link between AQ and the IRA, I'm convinced there is because the IRA are a massive international terrorist group - I believe it rivals the AQ network in size.

I'd have to wrack my brain and research it (don't have time to do it now), but I remember 2 or more years ago (and I believe it was Ireland) a suicider blew up prematurely. It seemed to me at the time (speculation) that there might have been a suggestion of a jihad connection.

Hmmm.. I don't recall that one.. but there was a AQ operative convicted of plotting to blow up an airline from an Irish airport late last year:

I suggested Sinn Fein/IRA links, one sympathetic idiot came looking for proof, I had a link, but it wasn't really conclusive.

"Exposed: US embassy is top terror risk"
Sunday Independent, Ireland ^ | Sun, Aug 08 04 | JIM CUSACK
Posted on 08/08/2004 6:08:21 AM PDT by Happygal

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "THE Government has appointed extra Garda Special Branch officers to protect the US and Israeli embassies in Dublin following warnings that they are among the most vulnerable to terrorist attacks in Europe.

The US embassy, which installed a blast wall and a reinforced steel and concrete entrance after the September 11 attacks, was assessed as the most vulnerable US embassy last year after threats were issued by Al-Qaeda to attack "smaller, softer targets."

The risk assessment of attack in Dublin was carried out by army specialists before Ireland's EU presidency. The security of US embassies across Europe was also looked at."

Top (UK Muslim) cop Muslims warning
The Sun ^ | 7-Aug-2006 | the Sun

Posted on 08/08/2006 6:26:23 PM PDT by Cronos

Warning ... Mr Ghaffur

BRITAIN’S top Asian cop yesterday called for an independent judicial review into the radicalisation of young Muslims.

Met Police assistant commissioner Tarique Ghaffur said the action was needed in the wake of the 7/7 bombings.

He said Islamophobia in Western society had created a “generation of angry young people” vulnerable to extremism.

In a speech to cops in Manchester he said tighter anti-terror laws had indirectly discriminated against Muslims.

He added: “We must think long and hard about the causal factors of anger and resentment.”

His remarks came as an opinion poll showed 24 per cent of UK Muslims think the 7/7 London attacks were justified.

And four in ten told the Channel 4 survey they think UK-born Muslims will launch a similar attack. A third want Sharia law in the UK.

What Hizbullah does shows that all the humiliation endured by us and the Islamic world stems from our own impotence. If [the Muslims] were men enough to enter the arena, their spit and threats would be enough to put the others in their place. As [the Muslims] continue to keep silent, [America and Israel] became so insolent, to the point that this wretched woman comes and talks about a New Middle East. This means a Middle East that is subservient to America, follows its orders unconditionally. This is the Middle East they desire, but, Allah willing, they will take this desire to the grave."

August 22 : Does Iran Have Something in Store
Wall Street Journal ^ | Tuesday, August 8, 2006 4:30 p.m. EDT | BERNARD LEWIS

Posted on 08/08/2006 3:52:16 PM PDT by Excellence

In Islam, as in Judaism and Christianity, there are certain beliefs concerning the cosmic struggle at the end of time--Gog and Magog, anti-Christ, Armageddon, and for Shiite Muslims, the long awaited return of the Hidden Imam, ending in the final victory of the forces of good over evil, however these may be defined. Mr. Ahmadinejad and his followers clearly believe that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is indeed well advanced. It may even have a date, indicated by several references by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the U.S. about nuclear development by Aug. 22. This was at first reported as "by the end of August," but Mr. Ahmadinejad's statement was more precise. What is the significance of Aug. 22? This year, Aug. 22 corresponds, in the Islamic calendar, to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to "the farthest mosque," usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven and back (c.f., Koran XVII.1). This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind.

Muhammeds Monsters link was not available, but the Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam looks fascinating.

Blogger takes aim at news media and makes a direct hit

Snip: "My main take is that political correctness has kept a lot of the hard truth from being spread by the mainstream media," says Johnson, 53, a professional musician in Los Angeles who spends most of his time maintaining his blog.

An open letter to the mainstream media

Snip: Lesson #1: In a war, civilians die and civilian property is destroyed. Since the days of Napoleon, armies have routinely drawn support from civilian populations. There is no way to win a war without also devastating a certain amount of the civilian population. The more popular the enemy force, the more devastation is necessary. We didn't simply defeat the Japanese military in World War II -- we absolutely devastated Japan's ability to make war.

Lesson #2: Terrorists are not fools. They recognize that you are unwilling to accept Lesson #1. They therefore melt into the civilian population, knowing that humane forces (read: American and Israeli) will attempt to avoid civilian casualties. If, however, humane forces have no choice but to kill civilians in order to kill terrorists, terrorists can rely on your sympathy.

Lesson #3: Islamists dissemble. You may love the stories Islamists tell, but don't rely on their truthfulness. You made complete fools of yourselves at Qana after listening to the Syrian-run Lebanese government and Hezbollah terrorists. You made fools of yourselves in Jenin in 2002 after listening to Palestinian Arabs complain of a nonexistent massacre by Israeli forces. "War is deceit," Mohammed stated. Take him at his word.

Lesson #4: Don't expect Muslim journalists from the Middle East to objectively report about Israel or America. Verify first. Trust later. Adnan Hajj is Lebanese, yet Reuters had him taking photos of the current conflict. They were shocked -- shocked! -- to learn he had blatantly altered those photos to make Israel's campaign look more brutal. Charles Johnson, who exposed Hajj's falsifications, received a death threat from another Reuters employee, who used the e-mail address "zionistpig": "I look forward to the day when you pigs get your throats cut." I'm willing to give odds the sender is Muslim. Any takers?

Lesson #5: Terrorists can read. When you reveal national security secrets during a time of war, assume that you are probably getting American soldiers and American civilians killed.

Lesson #6: War is not about proportionality. Knitting is about proportionality. War is about winning.

Lesson #7: Hatred is not a synonym for justification. Don't pretend that because Islamists hate us, they are justified in that hatred. Yes, Islamists hate America and Israel. So what? Nazis weren't particularly fond of Jews. Just because one group hates another group doesn't mean the first group is justified in its hatred.

"Worldwide, Islamic Fundamentalists Join the Fray"
21:54 Aug 08, '06 / 14 Av 5766
by Nissan Ratzlav-Katz

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Energized by the ongoing war between Israel and Hizbullah-controlled Lebanon, some Islamic fundamentalist groups claim to dispatch terrorists to Lebanon and to target Jews worldwide.

An Indonesian Muslim group announced Tuesday that it had sent 20 of its members to Lebanon in order to join the Jihad against the Jewish state. The claim, made by the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), was reported by the Associated Press, which warned that it had not been verified.

FPI spokesman Soleh Mahmoud said the 20 men left Indonesia five days ago and are now undergoing training in Lebanon under the supervision of Hizbullah. "They are ready to die to defend Muslims," Mahmoud said.

On Friday, before the FPI announced that it had already sent Muslim fighters to Lebanon, Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Desra Percaya said, "The government understands what they are feeling... anger, disappointment and frustration with Israeli troops acting inhumanly and brutally." He said that while the government could not stop people from joining the war in Lebanon, the seriousness of threats to do so is questionable: "If you want to do something, you want to travel, you do not need to declare it publicly, just say, 'In the name of God' and then go."

Last week, the Australian government announced that it was investigating a claim by another Indonesia-based Islamist group, the Asian Muslim Youth Movement (AMYM), that it had dispatched hundreds of Southeast Asian terrorist bombers to strike Jewish or infrastructure targets in countries such as Israel, the United States, Britain and Australia. A leader of the AMYM, Suaib Bidu, told The Australian newspaper that 217 suicide bombers - financed by wealthy Australian-Indonesian businessmen - had already been dispatched to their target countries, with thousands more prepared to set out. According to the report, more than 3,000 terrorists were to have been inducted on Saturday in the Indonesian city of Pontianak on Kalimantan island."

Inside the Mind of President Ahmadinejad of Iran

There's "irrational" as in "crazy like a fox" and there's "irrational" as in "out of touch with reality." President Ahmadinejad of Iran has said a lot of things lately that have been difficult to explain. Let's have a look at them and consider what possible explanations there are for these statements.

He has stated that the Holocaust never happened, that Israel should be wiped off the map, that he considers Islam at war with the West, and that he believes that due to Iran's importance to the world supply of oil, the West won't dare to oppose Iran in any matter. We'll go through them and then add one more at the end of this post.

Coalition Soldiers Detain, Kill Terrorists, Seize Weapons

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 8, 2006 – U.S. and Iraqi soldiers detained two suspected terrorists, killed four terrorists, and seized weapons in several different operations in Iraq today, U.S. military officials in Iraq reported.
Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers from 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, detained two suspected terrorists and seized a collection of weapons during a cordon-and-search operation southeast of Baghdad at about 6:30 a.m.

The two Iraqi suspects had fake IDs, a grenade, 100 7.62 mm rounds of ammunition, an SKS assault rifle, an AK-47 assault rifle, and terrorist propaganda DVDs in their house. The two were detained for questioning.

Elsewhere, four terrorists were killed after air surveillance from Multinational Division Baghdad’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, observed 13 men burying explosive devices on a rural roadway along the Euphrates River in western Yusufiyah province at about 10:15 a.m.

The men were observed digging five holes and emplacing explosive devices during an hour-long period beginning at about 9:15 a.m. After planting the first explosive device, eight of the 13 men left the scene. Five others were observed digging four more holes and burying explosive devices at intervals along the road, using a blue truck to carry the munitions.

Attack aircraft engaged the truck, destroying it and an estimated four terrorists. One individual had walked away moments prior to the engagement and escaped the explosion.

In other news, an Iraqi civilian died of wounds suffered after triggering an improvised explosive device while driving a tractor in western Anbar province, Iraq, today, U.S. military officials reported.

Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 7th Iraqi Army Division, responded to the attack and transported the victim to a local U.S. Marine outpost, where the victim was evacuated to a coalition medical facility for treatment. The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the medical facility.

The attack occurred in a small town called Bu Hardan, located on the eastern outskirts of the Syrian border town of Husaybah, Iraq.

The coalition forces military unit, which provides security to the Qa’im region, which includes Husaybah, is the Twentynine Palms, Calif.-based 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment.

Iraqi Forces Conduct Raid in Baghdad, Seize Weapons, Detain Terrorists

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 8, 2006 – In separate operations yesterday and Aug. 6, Iraqi security forces captured 22 suspected terrorists and seized various weapons, U.S. military officials in Iraq reported.
Iraqi security forces conducted an early morning raid in eastern Baghdad yesterday, capturing three individuals believed to be involved in punishment and torture cell activities.

As they received sustained automatic weapons and rocket-propelled-grenade fire from several insurgent positions in the Sadr City neighborhood, Iraqi forces and coalition advisers detained three suspected insurgents, conducted intelligence gathering on the objective, and then departed the area. Iraqi forces seized one AK-47 assault rifle and one magazine of AK-47 ammunition.

Coalition air assets provided precision fires in support of the operation, targeting positions from which Iraqi forces received large concentrations of enemy fire, including anti-aircraft fire.

The one coalition soldier wounded during the operation was evacuated immediately to a U.S. military medical facility in Baghdad for emergency surgery. He is currently listed in stable condition. An Iraqi woman was injured on one of the objectives. According to a coalition force adviser, her injury was not life-threatening and Iraqi medics began treating her immediately on the scene.

In another operation, Iraqi policemen and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers found a weapons cache northwest of Baghdad Aug. 6.

Iraqi police and soldiers from 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, requested support from the 463rd Military Police soldiers after being attacked by small-arms fire from multiple directions.

The police and soldiers maneuvered on the enemy and conducted house-to-house searches pending a cordon of the area set by U.S. military policemen. While cordoning off the area, 463rd soldiers found a weapons cache consisting of four rocket-propelled-grenade launchers, 31 RPG rounds, two 82 mm mortar systems, a 14.5 mm machine gun with 100 rounds, and two PKC machine guns. Thirteen suspects were detained during the cordon.

Elsewhere, soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, detained six suspected terrorists and seized a large weapons cache during a raid of the Al Hassana’n Mosque in southwestern Baghdad at about 10:30 p.m. Aug. 6.

The weapons cache consisted of four PKC machine guns, 13 AK-47 assault rifles, two rocket-propelled-grenade launchers, three RPGs, four RPG fuses, five 60 mm mortar rounds, a 60 mm mortar tube, a box of mortar cartridges, a flare gun, various bomb-making materials, and terrorist propaganda. The suspects were detained for questioning.
