WASHINGTON (AFP) - Some 30 percent of Americans cannot say in what year the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington took place, according to a poll published in the Washington Post newspaper.
While the country is preparing to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives and shocked the world, 95 percent of Americans questioned in the poll were able to remember the month and the day of the attacks, according to Wednesday's edition of the newspaper.
But when asked what year, 30 percent could not give a correct answer.
Of that group, six percent gave an earlier year, eight percent gave a later year, and 16 percent admitted they had no idea whatsoever.
This memory black hole is essentially the problem of the older crowd: 48 percent of those who did not know were between the ages of 55 and 64, and 47 percent were older than 65, according to the poll.
The Post telephone survey was carried out July 21-24 among 1,002 randomly selected adults. The margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.
These are the AGED people.
The bad news is that they DO vote. Good lors, these people live in retirement communities where the Democrats sign them all up to vote and give them rides to the polls and then 'suggest' how they should vote to get a ride home.
"So, where is my home deary?"
That's the group that answered, "Si" to every question.
"It is the same year that New York was featured on the Quarter in the States Quarter series."
Are you saying that if Illinois would have been featured that year the Sears Tower and John Hancock buildings wouldn't be standing?

But there can be a big diff between being impaired and being ignorant :)
It must have been the pressure of polling cuz I just can't believe the alternative that as many as 30% of people can forget something so major in the space of just 6 years

It seems that on almost any question imaginable there will be at least 30% hard-core idiots. That probably represents the core of ignorance that is ineducable, i.e., hard-core Democrats.
I was 32 at the time, living in El Segundo, CA. Right next to LAX Airport. I couldn't find my watch, my clock was on the floor, buried under clothes. I turned on the tv because I knew the morning news would have the time on the screen. I thought I was watching a movie preview...considering how many times I've seen those towers in movies (Ghostbusters, Daylight, Working Girl).
I was in shock, sad, mad, enraged, wanted a hotline to President Bush to clear a plane for me to take out whoever did it...I cried for a week straight, every time I saw an American flag, or heard the National Anthem (one local station played it at 6:00am, 12 noon and 5pm everyday). Damn, I'm starting to lose it now, just thinking about it...five years later...
And then it hit me. It hit me that it was never EVER so quiet in my neighborhood. No planes were running (the President had grounded them). If I recall, one of those planes was due to come here to Los Angeles. It was eerily quiet. Not too many cars on the street. Not many at the pub next door to my apartment.
One of the weirdest days, worst days, most focusing days I have ever experienced in my life. I always say that two things shaped me politically: the 2000 Election recount and aftermath, and 9/11/2001.

I also remember having the craziest thoughts. It looked like the world was ending, but suddenly I wanted a baby. That baby was conceived on October 11 and born July 5 of 2002. He is both the sweetest and most stubborn child. When he's happy he's wonderful, but his temper is something else.
