Poll: Bias Against Mormon, Muslim in White House
The Record, Bergen County, NJ
August 17- Most traditional barriers to religion in presidential elections have toppled, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found. In particular, the survey showed that anti-Semitism and anti- Catholicism are fading as voter taboos.
But uneasiness about some religions persists. Thirty-seven percent of those questioned said they would not vote for a Mormon presidential candidate and 54 percent said no to the prospect of a Muslim in the White House.
In addition, 21 percent said they could not vote for an evangelical Christian. Only 15 percent replied that they would not vote for a Jewish presidential candidate. Just 10 percent of those polled were unwilling to cast ballots for a Catholic chief executive.
"This clearly shows that the old Protestant/Catholic/Jewish distinction has largely eroded in American politics," said David Campbell, a professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame.
The nationwide survey of 1,321 adults was conducted June 24-27. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, poll director Susan Pinkus said.
With no likely Muslim candidate on the presidential horizon, the poll numbers present the greatest threat to a potential contender from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (as the Mormon Church is formally known). Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is a Mormon who is exploring a run for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.
"It is something he will have to address," said Merle Black, a professor of politics at Emory University. "It will be a challenge. It doesn't necessarily kill him as a candidate, but he may have to talk in more detail than he ever has before about his faith
Only 54% against a Muslim in the WH? I don't believe that number. There's something biased about this poll.
I would expect that to be about 75%.
I'd have to be certified as insane before I'd ever vote a Muslim into the presidency. (Would you prefer Wahabi, Mahdi, or Mujahedeen?)
Understatement of the year.
That's because they only polled 46% Democrats, obviously....
Are you John McCain?
How long do you think before the Democrats have their star "peaceful Muslim" politician?
Obviously, in the given climate, no one wants a Muslim in the White House.
And the Mormons don't deserve to get it either. I mean, they already have Heaven all to themselves, except for Saddam Hussein, of course, who Satan dumped there because Saddam was seriously ticking Satan off.
why is it that we always get so worked up over MSM dumbass Polls? I mean come on people its just out of that 30 year old playbook of the left
Only on weekends and holidays. :>)
Other times I'm Genghis Khan.
"Muslim in White House"
If a majority of this country elected a mooselimb to the WH, hmmmmmmm..........
That thought makes me afraid of what I might do in that case.
What I figured..........
I believe both Michigan and Massachusetts have tried out Romneys and they've done all right. In terms of politics, they tend to be conservative. In terms of principles, the tend to be extremely pro-American and patriotic.
I could vote for a Mormon.
But I couldn't vote for someone whose religion, as agreed to by renowned Islamic theologians, requires the end of democracies.
"Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll"
Pretty much all I needed to know.
don't they already? isn't barak obama muslim by birth? that's how it works, isn't it?....;)
Oooh bubba, don't vote for one of those EEEVIL evangelicals!
Those Bible-thumpers are DANGEROUS!
/sarc
At least Mormons aren't trying to blow themselves up on airplanes at 37,000 feet with 400+passengers or smashing suicide bombs into buildings.
