Boomerang will edit 'Tom and Jerry'

LONDON (UPI) -- The Boomerang cartoon TV network is editing some scenes from classic "Tom and Jerry" cartoons where the cat and mouse are smoking cigarettes.

The decision was announced after British media watchdog, Ofcom, investigated a viewer's complaint that the cartoons from the 1940s and 1050s were not appropriate for young viewers, the BBC reported Monday.

Boomerang will only edit the cartoons where smoking appears to be "condoned, acceptable or glamorized," the BBC said.

"We note that in Tom and Jerry smoking usually appears in a stylized manner," Ofcom said in a statement.

However, it said, "the level of editorial justification required for the inclusion of smoking in such cartoons is necessarily high."

I shouldn't be surprised. They've been redubbing them for awhile now, and not just for sound quality.

How the heck do you redub a cartoon where no one talks?

Bye Bye Hitler, Tojo, Mammy, and now Smoking. Thank goodness the thought police are there to protect my children, rather than letting me inform them of the history of our culture and why things changed.

I'll bet the Itchy and Scratchy characters would be a big hit with muslims.

Let's see, this adds on to what they've already edited out: Tom in blackface with big lips, African savages and Mammy Two-Shoes.

Up next: the numerous scenes where Tom, Jerry or someone else is drunk.

Is this happening in Britain only, or America too?

I heard about this yesterday. It's okay to bash each other with frying pans, but smoking would send the wrong message. Besides, who cares if Tom smokes? He's the bad guy, remember? And everybody knows that cats are EEEEE-VIL (except for Walt Disney, in most of his/their movies).

Yea, and forget about viewing the roadrunner, too much violence.

And what about the three stooges?

Most 40's and 50's cartoons have long since been hacked apart for reasons of political correctness. What gets broadcast doesn't much resemble the originals, which used to be shown uncut as late as the mid-70's.

Anybody whose "cartoon upbringing" happened after that is far more likely as an adult to put on a Pink Power Ranger suit and go to work for the Al Gore "Save the Planet" Team. ;)

Well, this story hasn't gotten any better since yesterday. With all of the revisionist editing of cartoons going on, pretty soon, all that will be left of them will be the Warner Brothers Logo at the beginning and the words "That's All Folks" at end. The Daffy Duck voice over going "tha-dea, tha-dea tha-dea That's All Folk's" will be cut for fear of offending people who stutter!!

God, I hate PC!!

The owner (Mammy whatever) would talk occasionally. They got rid of the stereotypical voice fairly quickly -- or at least the last time I saw her in one.

Oh the injustice of it all! How are kids gonna ever learn that smoking is cool? Especially when one first starts and there's a lot of coughing and stuff, that's when these images are so neceassryy.

First they came for Barney Rubble as spokeperson for Winston's and I didn't complain. Then they came for Tom and Jerry and I still didn't complain enough. When they finally came for Joe Camel it was too late. The whole world had discovered the only thing that was stupid was to continue smoking despite the fact that it kills you more often than not.

And soon, we'll move on to Einsteins pipe, churchill's cigar, FDR's cigarette holder and on and on and on. They got the thin edge of the wedge in and now they'll hammer it until it's in allthe way.

Tom's the bad guy? We always root for Tom. Although, I'm thinking our cat should stop watching Tom and Jerry, since she tries to play with mice (even invites them in) instead of actually killing them.
