Wife and two daughters of senior editor James Kim found in Oregon; search is still on for James Kim, who left the car on foot two days ago.

The wife and daughters of missing CNET senior editor James Kim have been found alive and airlifted to a local hospital, authorities announced at a press conference in Merlin, Ore., Monday afternoon.

James Kim left the car on snowshoes two days ago to seek help and has not been found, the official said. The search for him continues.

According to the official speaking at the news conference, the conditions of Kati, Penelope and Sabine are not yet known. More details are expected at a press conference at 5 p.m. PST, which CNET will stream live.

Kati Kim reportedly flagged down a helicopter rented by families of the missing persons.

After searches in Oregon's Curry and Douglas counties, new information on missing CNET senior editor James Kim and his family narrowed the search back to the Bear Camp area in Josephine County, according to reports Monday.

A cell phone tower received a signal from one of the family's cell phones at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday near Glendale, but officials say the signal is only an indicator the family could have been within 26 miles of Glendale at that time, according to a report in The Oregonian.

They're not saying what the other item is because they haven't gotten their hands on it yet. It's down in the gorge bottom and they're going to have to lower someone down there tomorrow with ropes to get it.

They can see it, but can't get to it yet.

Yeah, I agree it's a stunner.

He may have gone off to die. After all, he said he would be back in just a few hours.

They are searching the 5 mile point as though he never got further.

I always wonder why skywriting aircraft aren't used during searches; possibly to give directions/give hope to the "lost" person(s) below. Skywriting that James' wife and girls have been found and are doing great might give him a "second wind."

That really bothered me that they seemed to just know he had gone 5 miles - not 4 miles, not 6 miles - and have been saying that since early this morning.

I wonder if they are seeing a body?

How deep is this gorge? Does anyone know?

I'm so confused on where the car was found. They've said over and over that it was near the Bear Camp Viewpoint turnout, or actually in it.

Ok...There's more than one viewpoint, and they were not there...they were two miles down a FS goat road.

I had coordinates 42.63056N, -123.83611W, decimally. Then you or someone gave me 42 40' 40.12"N 124 04' 31.65"W, which is closer to Marial and Illahe.

No. That is where I was directed to take a detour years ago..much to my chagrin...

Then, later articles today, which very well may be wrong, have been saying they were 15 miles from Bear Camp Road. Is only a small part of that Merlin-Galice-Agness road called Bear Camp Road?

Nope. the whole road is just that: Bear Camp road.
And the BC road starts miles up river from Galice.

I thought the whole road could be called Bear Camp Road. By my initial calculations, they would have been 15-16 miles west of I-5, ON Bear Camp Road. Does that make sense?

the road from Merlin to Galice is the Galice road, at least to us locals. see above.

Also, where is the the Graves Creek bridge in relation to all this?

No where near any of this, disregard totally....

Is what would be called the "Bear Camp area" or just "Bear Camp" at the far western end of this road, before it becomes Hwy 575 and hits 101, then goes down to Gold Beach? TIA

No. It referees only to the road, not the area. the area is usually called that god forsaken wilderness that will kill you off of Bear Camp road.

Yes, as though they know he is right there. Which prompted my earlier question of why is he not answering to their calls?

And the info in my post 594 tells me that this guy had a lot on his mind.

It's a natural inclination for lost hikers to go down a river thinking that it has to lead to "civilization." Unfortunately, that inclination is often incorrect and also dangerous. The best alternative, if one knows someone is looking for them, is to stay in a visible place and make known your whereabouts. I don't say this to cause any criticism of Mr. Kim or what is now the situation in his case, but I've seen several cases even recently where lost folks have followed rivers only to be in a worse situation. My continuing prayers for James Kim.

By my initial calculations, they would have been 15-16 miles west of I-5

Ironic thing is he could have walked the 15-16 miles if he had stayed on the road (at least before he became weakened after so many days in the car), and it is probably fewer miles to the first human contact.

On the road names, I have noticed in my neck of the woods that the forest service roads often have one or two verbal names and one or more numbered names depending on whose system is being used. It is very confusing.

Sure seems that people commonly refer to the whole length as "Bear Camp Road".

I live not more than 40 miles (approx) away from at 1500 feet elevation and it's been around 28 every night. It's 34 right now.

I can't help but wish he could have lit one fire during the day, on the road. Maybe everything was too wet from show, but the smoke surely would have attracted someone's attention. Or maybe that's wishful thinking.

The thing is, if you're just one ridge away you won't see the smoke. I have noticed that while driving through the mountain passes and seeing wood stove smoke. It tends to settle in one little area and doesn't rise above the ridges. Now, tire smoke would be much more contrasty and might have a chance of being seen from an aircraft, if someone was looking.

Nat'l Weather Service website shows a low of 35-45 in the coastal range and a high tomorrow of 50-60. Click around and it gives a variety of forecasts, I guess that office has developed their website enough to factor in elevation and other factors for pretty specific locations.
