Dallas to promote "Gay-friendly tourism"
Washington Post ^ | January 7, 2007

Dallas, long known as a Baptist stronghold and home of Stetson-wearing business types, is touting a new image: gay travel destination. The city has joined other locations, such as Philadelphia and Fort Lauderdale, in actively reaching out to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender visitors.

"Our secret is out," says a page at www.dallascvb.com, the city's official tourism Web site. The page lists venues of special appeal to gay travelers, including Oak Lawn, a neighborhood with a predominantly gay population, bars, museums and more than 20 gay-friendly hotels.

Oh, for goodness sake, just how many gays are there in Texas?

Dallas has always been a gay mecca, nothing new here.

That's what I always thought too. I guess the Washington Post has just now figured it out. Must be a slow 'news' day around there.

No, gay-friendly means being forced to give your approval, support and special cival rights for people whose lifestyles don't happen to jive with yours.

Doing business with a person or group of people doesn't necessarily mean you "approve" of anything but their money.

maybe y'all can displace some of the pukes from Kalifornia, Oregon and Washington who are trying to ruin our beautiful, conservative state.

Or at least get them confined to the Sun Valley/Ketchum area and away from ordinary people.

Dallas County elected an openly lesbian sheriff, and many of the county wide offices went democrat.

It is more of a factor that the new Sheriff was Hispanic and Democrat than that she is a lesbian that got her elected, IMHO. Don't believe this would ever happen in Tarrant, in spite of the supposed trend hyped by the local leftist rags.

Dallas (along with Austin) is a social anomaly. Go north, south, east or west, and you find environments exponentially more conservative. Farmer's Branch is the exception - a virtual oasis in a desert of liberal squalor. Let's hope they have the fortitude to steel themselves against the onslaught of racist thugs who are invading their town.

Which Baptist Church moved to Denton?

THANK YOU for the words to "Big D" I only remembered the chorus from when I was a kid growing up in Big D.

"True, but if I recall correctly, as Mayo's heading off base after he graduates, he runs across Foley doing the same spiel with a new class, and the kid in the new class is from Texas."

I don't doubt it for a second. Gunny Foley wouldn't be the type of man to show favoritism among new recruits. He would insult everyone equally! As I wrote earlier, a great movie and a great performance by Louis Gossett, Jr. as Foley.

Prestonwood Baptist moved from Richardson to west Plano (Denton County) a few years ago. They recently started a satellite campus even further north in Prosper (Collin County).

In Officer and a Gentlemen, it was Oklahoma.

In "Full Metal Jacket," the "Steers and Queers" line was used for Texas.

"Only steers and queers come from Texas, Private Cowboy."

Have heart, it's a great place. Don't let one news story and a thread full of knee-jerk reactions sour you on Dallas.

You are so right. My husband loves it there and I will be joining him this fall. The few times I have been there it really seems like a neat place..What city does not have a population of gays?....For me it was more of an eye roll, oh brother reaction with a sarcastic comment.

I know Foley uses the line again with the new class at the end. I thought it was Texas that time. Now that I'm looking into it, maybe not. Oh, well.

Maybe you should look into some of those tour packages to Dallas.

LOL!

Nah, I've been happily married to a lovely woman for 29 years. We travel extensively, but a tour of gay culture spots in Texas will never be on our to-do list. :-)

Raiders, eh? Hehehehehehe...as a former Floridian, I'm a Bucs fan. They haven't done so well since '03, when they won the Super Bowl...remember that game? I'm sure Gannon does; he's probably still having nightmares about #55 coming throught the line to cream him!

Anyway, enough gloating. Neither of our teams did squat this year.

Yeah, if we could clear all the libs out of the Treasure Valley, McCall, Pokey, Couer D'Alene, etc, round 'em up and send 'em to Sun Valley, we could then build a hunge prison fence around the area and call it the Lib Zone. Then we'd assign the 116th to patrol the perimeter and shoot anyone trying to escape. Kinda like Escape from New York, but for libs.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
