Rejected: FDR at the gates of Hell

Rejected
FDR at the gates of Hell

A stranger stood at the Gates of hell
And the Devil himself answered the bell.
He looked him over from head to toe
And said: My friend, I'd like to know
What you have done in the line of sin
To entitle you to come within?

Then Franklin D, with his usual guile
Stepped forth with his toothy smile and said:

"When I took charge in '33
A nations faith was mine," said he
"I promised them this and I promised them that
And I calmed them down with a fireside chat.
I spent their money in fishing trips
And fished from the decks of their battleships.

I gave them jobs in the WPA
Then raised their taxes and took it away.
I raised their wages and closed their shops
I killed their pigs and buried their crops
I double-crossed both old and young
And still the folks my praises sung. I taxed it so high they couldn't drink.
I furnished 'em money with Government loans
When they missed a payment I took their homes.
When I wanted to punish the folks, you know
I'd put my wife on the radio.

I paid them to let their farms lie still
And imported foodstuffs from Brazil.
I curtailed crops when I felt real mean
And shipped in crops from the Argentine.

When they started to worry, stew and fret
I got them to chant the alphabet
With the AAA and the NLB
The WPA and the CCC.

With these many units I got their goats
And still I crammed it down their throats.
My workers worked with the speed of snails
While the taxpayers chewed their fingernails.

When the organization needed dough
I closed their plants with the CIO.
I ruined jobs, I ruined health
And I put the screws on the rich man's wealth.

And some who couldn't stand the gaff
Would call on me and how I'd laugh.
When they got too strong on certain things
I'd pack and head for "Ole Warm Springs."
I ruined their country, their homes and then
I placed the blame on "Nine Old Men."

Now Franklin talked both long and loud
And the devil stood and his head he bowed.
At last he said: "Lets make it clear
You'll have to move, you can't stay here
For once you mingle with this mob,
I'll have to find another job."

My Dad used to recite this to me while cutting my hair. He had come from a strong Democrat family, helped FDR get elected and was the first one to break from them in the 1940 election.

The '40 election was for FDR's third term, a break with George Washington's tradition of serving only two terms. That gave a great many Democrats pause, but didn't prevent Roosevelt's reelection.

His fourth term was a mistake of major proportions. FDR was too ill to have run again. I was in Naval Aviation, and when FDR died, I felt like the world had come to an end. I didn't think Harry S Truman had the necessary attributes to be Commander-in-Chief. HST was a testy fellow from the old Pendergast machine in Kansas City, but he did his presidential job, and did it well.

My grandfather, a good man - bless his heart, hated FDR with a raging purple passion. Out of respect for him when my son and I visited D.C. years ago on a class trip I refused to go to the FDR memorial.

Ok guys. You are going to have to explain FDR to us youngins. In fact, I wasn't born for 20 more years after FDR died.

It sounds like your grandfather and my father would've been good friends. We live close enough to DC that I've visited three times. I've always avoided the FDR Memorial out of respect for the memory of my father as well.

By the way, he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps the week after Pearl Harbor. When I drove off to college, he gave me his flight pants and told me to always pack them during winter driving-- they might save my life. I've been offered top dollar from collectors, but have never had the heart to part with them.

How true. So sad many can't see the truth.

My Dad could not stand him either. He always told me that FDR started this country down the road to socialism. And as with many topics he was exactly right. I miss him.

My grandfather, a good man - bless his heart, hated FDR with a raging purple passion.

So did my Father and Mother.

I wish I could remember which family member told me this story. My Dad was a farmer. "He was out plowing the field with a team of horses. A friend came by and informed him that FDR had been elected to a 3rd term. One of the horses just laid down and died."

What people miss about Rove is he is a "clear thinker." This means he does not think in slogans and carefully balances and reviews a subject as to its genesis, importance and consequence before he applies his political percepts.

Not many can do this. Most people opine on anything and everything without much thought as to what the actual subject is about. The RATS are especially good at thinking by slogans--this is why Rove has been so successful in achieving and maintaining power in spite of an unpopular war and envious masses.

Harry S Truman... did his presidential job, and did it well.

Sorry, Okie, I'll have to halfway disagree. Truman handled the close of WWII well, but wussed out in Korea, and put us bayonet to bayonet against Chicom regulars, lost us the war and gave us the atomic Kims.

My grandfather was another who hated FDR -- glad to meet some more multi-generational Conservative families here. The big media of that day was SO pro-FDR -- the movies especially glorified him the way third-world countries glorify dictators.

There was always more opposition to FDR than leftist mythologists want you to believe. Sure, in 1936 he won a landslide -- but there were always 40-45 percent voting against him -- still big margins, but you get the impression that only about 10 percent were unhappy with him.

Just like today, the ignorant and their manipulators bought the Rat line. And they tried to bully opponents into silence. They still use the same playbook.

I need a shower. FDR had his flaws (most of which were checked by check and balances, do we have great system of what?) , but he was a great president, overall. Just ask Ronald Reagan.

It is interesting that even during WW2, Roosevelt got a mere 53% of the vote when he ran the 4th and final time. He did get over 400 electoral votes though.

Been to the FDRR memorial in DC? It is an impressive site to visit but I couldnt help thinking how little substance there was to the man after reading so many of his quotes. All he did was point out the obvious. "Too many people ar suffering from this depression," or words to that effect. Duh.

Been to the FDRR memorial in DC?

Nope, haven't made that one, TNC. But I have been to his home in Hyde Park, NY. It was tough listening to the propaganda, but I have been to a home of every US President who has one to visit (almost all of them do -- other than the most recent ones who don't have any open yet, McKinley is the only one with no surviving residence.) So it was part of a historical obligation, not an act of homage.

I have to admit I thought a few nasty thoughts involving property desecration that I never carried out!

Funny how they omitted this FDR quote from the memorial:

"The lessons of history, confirmed by the evidence immediately before me, show conclusively that continued dependence upon relief induces a spiritual disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole our relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit. It is inimical to the dictates of a sound policy. It is in violation of the traditions of America. Work must be found for able-bodied but destitute workers.

The Federal Government must and shall quit this business of relief."
