Nuclear Blast on TV's '24' Causes Fallout for Fox (PC crybaby alert)
ABC News ^ | 1/15/07

"How much longer? I hear someone," says the nervous terrorist with a heavy Middle Eastern accent, just before U.S. agents storm a warehouse where a nuclear device is being assembled. Confusion reigns, drama builds, the device is detonated and a mushroom cloud looms over Los Angeles. Such is primetime television in the age of terrorism, or as some critics charge, has "24" gone too far?

"It's the closest television comes to roller coasters," said David Bianculli, television critic for the New York Daily News. "It works well dramatically, and as far as feeding fears, that's what '24' is all about."

Sut Jhally, co-producer and co-director of the film "Hijacking Catastrophe," says the dramatic action in the show creates a dangerous climate in which the public loses some of its perspective on what's real and what's not. Of course that may be a minority opinion given the show's enormous popularity.

I think it's on either ABC or CBS but I'm not sure. In Canada I pick it up on a local station and the Sci-Fi channel repeats it later in the week.

I seem to remember a certain political ad by a certain political candidate of a certain political party back in 1964 wehre a little girl was picking daisies when an atomic bomb went off. Oh, but that ad was shown only once (that was paid for)so that makes it ok.

There was President Logan in between. And when Logan went down presumably the VP went in like Ford, and Palmer won the next election. That's my take.

possibly, but what is interesting is that the show is not bowing down to the 'PC' game and it is very relevant to our situation.

Arabs? Kal Penn is of Hindu Indian descent and his character is intended to be Pakistani. It isn't about Arabs (MASH and Make Room for Daddy had Arab characters) it's about Muslims.

What was MASH supposed to reinforce, that Arabs were cross-dressers?

Television shows like '24' also reinforce stereotypes about Arabs

Stereotypes often arise out of inconvenient facts. Since the end of Northern Ireland's "troubles" show me a terrorist who isn't a Muslim.

They don't "take tickets" but transit cops randomly will ask people for their ticket. That's how it works in Houston anyway.

Good morning.
"...Jack had lost his edge after being tortured in a Chinese prison for two years..."

There's nothing like a mushroom cloud rising over Valencia to hone that edge again, judging by the last thing Jack says.

To me, good buddy Achmed and his betrayal of his American friends was what the show was all about.

Didnt they have a nuclear cruise missile explode in one of the earlier seasons? More fake news.

Wayne's weeniness dovetails nicely with Obama/Osama's empty suit. Anyone who's watched the past seasons of 24 and know that Wayne was previously his brother's advisor will probably smile at the parallels to Obama's similar "credentials" for president.

Logan was the VP under the first President Palmer.

Actually, wasn't the VP under Palmer I the one who tried to invoke the 25th amendment against him and then had to resign when David won in the end? I think Logan must have been appointed after that.

ALSO -- just remembered that the VP under Logan last season was blown up in an airplane, so we don't know who the replacement veep was.

The Basques are still at it, but they're strictly a regional operation. Here in North America there's also the eco-freaks but it's low-grade stuff; they go after specific targets rather than the general public.
