Lieberman Might Back Republican in 2008

Jan 28 12:15 PM US/Eastern

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee in 2000 who won re-election as an independent last year, says he is open to supporting any party's White House nominee in 2008.

"I'm going to do what most independents and a lot of Democrats and Republicans in America do, which is to take a look at all the candidates and then in the end, regardless of party, decide who I think will be best for the future of our country," Lieberman said Sunday.

"So I'm open to supporting a Democrat, Republican or even an Independent, if there's a strong one. Stay tuned," said the three-term lawmaker who caucuses with Senate Democrats.

Lieberman is an ally of GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a 2008 hopeful, and supports President Bush's new Iraq strategy. Lieberman won re-election as an independent last fall when Democrats backed an anti-war candidate who won the party primary.

Speaking of which politician he may support in 2008, Lieberman said, "Obviously, the positions that some candidates have taken in Iraq troubles me. Obviously, I will be looking at what positions they take in the larger war against Islamist terrorism."

He added, "I am genuinely an independent. I agree more often than not with Democrats on domestic policy. I agree more often than not with Republicans on foreign and defense policy."

The senator said he wanted to select someone "I believe is best for the future of our country. ... Party is important, but more important is the national interest. And that's the basis that I will decide whom to support for president."

Lieberman spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

What I would like to hear is that Lieberman switches over to the Republican party.

Joe is playing his hand for all it's worth and I'll give him credit for not running back to the rat fold after they tried to dump him.

I wouldn't want him as a Republican but I do like him in his role as quasi-'Independent' and as a thorn in the side of the traitors in the senate. At least we know where he stands on national security.

That's one more vote for us. There's no telling how important that may be in the future.

Yes, Joe has a good sense about a strong military, and fighting the WOT. Now, if he would get some good sense in regards to taxes, spending, gun control, abortion, prayer in school, and our border, then I'd belly up to the bar with him.

Is he going to support a Republican, or is he going to support Rudy or McCain?

It would change the SENATE leadership. I wish he would at least be offered a good committee chairmanship to change and caucus w the Republicans

Much better to have the Dems control the Senate, right?

RINOs from state like Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, or Massachusetts are far better than the liberal Democrats now representing those states. They're useful for organizing the Senate and on various issues.

RINOs from conservative states such as Hagel, McCain, Brownback, and Graham need to be defeated in the primaries by more conservative candidates.

Yes, then the people would expect the Republicans to do something. But the Republicans would fail because of a few RINOs. When the Republicans had the Majority it was because of a few Rinos who would hold out and keep things from happening. Now there are DINOs in places like Southern Indiana, Kentucky, parts of Ohio and Virginia. Let the Demorats deal with the DINOs now. Remember the Dems had 100 hours to get r done. I don't think they will get much done. If they do get something done, I imagine that they will shoot them self in the foot. Anyway, we might be able to get control back in the next two years.

To get something done though, we have to convince Conservatives that the most important election is the primary. We need to run the RINOs off our Elephant Turf during the Primary Elections.

Brownback votes with us nearly all of the time, how is he a RINO? Besides, with the shift in Kansas politics, it's either him or a D.

Brownback has joined with Hagel and the Democrats in backing the resolution that opposes the surge of troops into Iraq.

Some folks have a thinking deficit or they are so punitive - they are destructive.

Won't happen. A nice ploy for negotiations within the Democrat party, but he won't support the GOP any more than he ever seriously considered making that trip to the Oval Office to tell President Clinton, "Sir, for the good of the nation, it's time to go."
