Governor Perry has made a huge mistake in signing an executive order which mandates that all sixth-grade girls entering public schools by the fall of 2008 must be vaccinated for Human Papilloma Virus with Gardasil a product of Merck Pharmaceuticals.
A public debate in the Legislature should have preceded such a drastic move, all ……. careful consideration.
Parents are being told, "We do not expect nor believe that you will stay abstinent until marriage."
The decision to get young girls vaccinated for HPV is not an easy…. In less than a year since approval, 82 cases of serious adverse events following HPV vaccinations of Gardasil have been reported. These incidents should have been discussed thoroughly in open forum in the Legislature before any mandate was even considered.

Parents need to evaluate all aspects of the HPV vaccine.. there are no long-term studies yet on the way these sixth graders might be affected in future years when [they] have their own babies. HPV vaccine only covers 4 of 30 types of HPV which account for 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts. That still leaves 30% of cervical cancers and 10% of genital warts … not covered.
A definite drawback to Gardasil is that girls must get three full doses of the vaccine for it to be effective. How many families are going to understand the urgency of making sure their girls get three full doses over a six months' period of time?

Opting out means sending a form to the State, have it returned, and have it notarized, then giving it to the school.
They only 'allow' you to opt out for religious or moral reasons. A simple "No thanks" won't fly.
It's like you have to justify your kid not having something government has no right to force on you in the first place.
"Opting out" just sounds easy.
There shouldn't be a law requiring it at all. But there is. EO's suck. Of course, some people love 'em, depending on the topic at hand. If one truly believes the vaccine is dangerous, then the process shouldn't be much of a hindrance.
Perry's EO is illegal, and and illegal act has no force in law.
Why should I have to go through ANY 'process' because he wants to play King of Texas?
I remember when I was very young; we received polio vaccines at school which I hated; but I don't remember that they were mandated or not.
That it is to prevent some types of cancer.
How hard is that? And if you simply opt out, you don't even have to do that.
I don't agree with Perry's action on this, but the typical Freeper harping, handwringing, and hysteria over each outrage de jour is ridiculous. Plug-n-play misery, oh how you have been abandoned to wander in the wilderness and die.

Same as any other disease. If your kid is old enough to ask specific questions about disease transmission vectors, she's probably old enough to know about the birds and the bees.
Well suppose I don't think it's time that my little girl gets "that talk".
"That talk" -- as if it's a one-shot deal -- is part of the problem. Any kid who's old enough to ask the question is old enough for an honest answer. No more information than necessary, and age-appropriate, but honest.
Classic joke: Kid asks Dad, "Daddy, what's sex?" Dad then gives him "The Talk," in detail and three-part harmony. The kid, wide-eyed, looks at Dad, blinks, and after a period of stunned silence says, "okay, but I don't think I can fit all of that in this little blank on the form."

It is just another disease, though more lethal than most. Your logic is ridiculous if you think that HPV is a judgment, and that the folks who get it somehow deserve it. Or delusional if you believe that probable immunity from the most prevalent forms of HPV will turn every nice little girl into a slutty mattress-back.
I can only imagine the fits of apoplexy you'll go into when and if medical science comes up with an HIV vaccine.

The Texas order has an opt-out option. So opt out. If you're happy with your daughter becoming a victim or a carrier rather than getting a stick in the arm, that is not my call.
yeah...it's a little more complicated...first of all it will not prevent all HPV infections, secondly it will prevent the four genotypes of HPV for an unkonw length of time, thirdly it will not prevent 70% of ALL cervical cancers...only those that are caused by the 4 genotypes that are vaccinated for and only in the cases that there is a genetic predisposition for viral caused cervical cancer...
the women will still have to get pap smears in order to detect cervical cancer... so what's the benefit.
Why isn't governor "nice hair" mandating the influenza or pneumovax vaccine which cause exponentially more deaths than cervical cancer..... ???
I mean if this is for disease prevention that causes deaths...then by all means he should line up every person for the pneumovax and influenza vaccine...

...you were lucky that you didn't get the first batch of attenuated viral vaccine for polio... read up on what happened to some of the first that got that vaccine...never be the first to get a drug...or the last...
To bad that is not something I can check on the states opt out affidavit.
Once again Gov. Perry's skull confirms the archetectual strength of the dome by showing how it can support a large amount of weight on top (hair & ego) while containing nothing supportive underneath....

Perry plans to screw all of Texas...he's just starting with the young girls first...
I voted for Perry because I was not given a viable option (Kinky? Grandma?) but I object to this and I think he has made a huge mistake. I am not saying the vaccine is necessarily a bad thing but we needed discussion and we got NONE.
