Giuliani's Golden Ticket? [California Polls]
Claremont Institute ^ | 02/21/07 | Michael Brandon McClellan

Posted on 02/21/2007 11:03:00 AM PST by BunnySlippers

In a move to increase its relevance in the presidential selection process, the Golden State is set to jump up its primary from June of 2008 to February 5th, less than a year away.

This may benefit New York's presidential aspirants, and especially its Republican one.

Last week I noted Giuliani's electric support at the California Republican Party convention. A recent poll has resoundingly brought forth the same message. This morning, the Wall Street Journal's John Fund notes the following numbers:

With California moving its presidential primary to Feb. 5 of next year, what Golden State voters think about White House politics has actually begun to matter. A new poll of likely primary voters by San Diego-based Datamar, Inc. shows the two current frontrunners to be Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani. The poll shows Ms. Clinton with 34% of the vote, leading Barack Obama's 24% and John Edwards' 16%. Given Ms. Clinton's enormous name ID advantage, her lead is not compelling. On the GOP side, pundits were startled to see former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani with 41% support, John McCain with only 17% and Mitt Romney trailing with 11%.

It is early, and a great deal can happen in a year, but those are stunning numbers for the former Mayor. If present trends in California continue, the Golden State's primary move may just be Giuliani's golden ticket to the nomination.

If he were to win there he wouldn't need too much more to wrap it up.

The WOT is the only issue that can matter at this point, all others are moot if we lose this one... G Man understands this and understands VICTORY, not cowardice.

I strongly agree, and I believe many other conservatives do too which is why Giuliani is posting such big numbers at this point.

Well, you could go to the Census numbers, figure in the growth of the population in the country, and extrapolate them for yourself. I don't care if you think I am wrong or not, I am merely saying that the Democrats stand to gain far more new voters than Republicans, who have been sitting and doing nothing to motivate their base.

I don't need your advice on "keeping powder dry". I have been through enough elections to know when an impending disaster is looming. Rudy Giuliani equates right now to Democrat George McGovern in 1972. The 2008 GOP nominee (whoever it is!) has been set up to fail miserably.

As for Hillary, I grasp her negatives quite well, thank you, but we all know how the Clinton Slime Machine works. That said, you should spend your time working to elect GOP senators and congresspersons, rather than giving unwanted lessons to veterans in political wars.

I can guarantee you that red state voters won't stay home and allow Hillary to win. They will crawl over glass to keep her from winning, and Rudy will get the I's.

Your argument is flawed.

You haven't been reading the same single-issue anti-Rudy posts that I have, then. They claim to prefer a President that they can fight than one of our party who will serve what they see as a liberal agenda.

Only time will tell if they reconsider.

The biggest political mistake Bubba ever made was putting her in charge of the health care task force. She couldn't sell a bottle of water to a man dying of thirst.

It's juvenile crap like this that tempts me to vote for Rudy. You can oppose Rudy all you like but leave garbage like this out. Stuff like this gets big chuckles over at the Democratic Union but I would hope the Free Republic is classier than that.

I just think the number of people who will crawl over broken glass to vote against her are much larger than those who'll do the same to vote for her.

Wow, if that's all it takes to swing your vote, you must have some really strong convictions. :-)

Rudy definatley puts NY in play, and frankly having lived in Cali (though only briefly) I think he definately has a chance to put Cali in Play. He may not, but I think Dems will have to spend far more time in their "solid" stated fighting and have far less left to work on swing states.

Remember EVERYONE KNOWS WHO HITLERY IS!!! And she cannot get over 30-40% approval or under 50% negatives.... She's an incredibly weak national candidate.. She's not going to be able to "redefine" herself.... Everyone knows who she is, and a lot of leftists aren't too happy with her right now.

I think Rudy V Hitlery and you see a very very very different voting pattern than you have in the last 16-20 years.

Rudy while not perfect, from a practicle standpoint is much more problematic for the Dems... They can't paint him as an "extremist".... He's going to definately put NY into play, big time. And as long as the Dems keep this "bet on defeat" nonsense going on, it gives a HUGE deliniator between G man and Hitlery...

And while the Main Stream Press will not tell you, most americans, want VICTORY, not undermining and traitorism.

Opposition to Giuliani cannot be reduced to "single issue" voters. There are a number of issues besides abortion, including:

Partial Birth Abortion
Embryonic Stem Cell Research
Euthanasia (What IS Rudy's position on this one?)
Gun control
Amnesty/Safe havens for illegal border invaders
Homosexual Civil Unions and/or marriage
School choice (vouchers)
Personal character issues
History of selections and appointments (Bernie Kerik)
Business practices and conflicts of interest

We don't seem to get a straight answer from Giuliani's campaign or supporters.

By the time the primaries roll around, Rudy will be divorcing his latest wife and trolling for one more.

BTW, how'd his first marriage work out? Getting an annullment from his second cousin was it? After 14 years? Ah yes, the Roman Catholic vote.
