Ahmadinejad Vows News Soon on Atomic Work
-Full Story-

Iran's president promised on Sunday Iranians would soon hear more news about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, which the West believes is a covert effort to build atomic bombs despite Tehran's denials.

"The Iranian nation will soon hear fresh news about our country's nuclear transition," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying.

He did not give details about any announcements or when the news would be released but Ahmadinejad is due to hold a news conference on Tuesday.

U.S. diplomatic and consular facilities in Germany are increasing their security posture. We are taking these steps in response to a heightened threat situation. ARTICLE SNIPPET: “CBNNews.com - GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Armed assailants set off explosives at a private school in northern Gaza early Saturday, damaging the building but causing no casualties, Palestinian security officials said.

There was no claim of responsibility.

The attack took place around 5 a.m., several hours before the start of the school day.

The attackers overpowered security guards, then set off bombs in several areas of the American International School, security officials said.

One of Gaza’s best private schools, the American International School was founded in 1995 and has more than 600 students.”

U.S. Embassy Kabul issued the following Warden Message on April 20, 2007:

Avian Influenza Update

The Afghanistan Ministry of Agriculture’s Veterinarian Diagnostic Laboratory confirmed three positive cases of H5N1 Avian Influenza (AI) strain in the Karte Char (4)/Seh area of Kabul City on April 17, 2007. Following the confirmation of these cases, the Afghan Ministries of Agriculture and Public Health took appropriate measures. The major pattern of bird deaths/infections in Afghanistan appears to be primarily centered on the bird markets.

The Embassy continues to work closely with Afghanistan authorities and locally-based international health organizations to monitor events and will share information with the American Community as it becomes available.

We remind all American citizens of previous recommendations issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). You should avoid contact with live poultry and wild birds, and avoid visiting commercial or backyard poultry farms and live poultry markets. You can also minimize risk by practicing safe handling procedures for all poultry products, including thoroughly cooking food and decontaminating cutting boards and kitchen utensils. Well-cooked eggs and poultry products are safe to consume (temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius kill the virus). You should also be cautious about consuming salad dressings and sauces that contain raw egg products.

* Note that birds die regularly from many diseases, and that a fallen bird may or may not have AI. Report unusual numbers of bird deaths to either the Provincial Veterinarian or the Central Government’s Ministry of Agriculture’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Azizullah Osmani (0700-272-523). If you can, either bury the bird or seal it in a plastic bag and deliver it to the Department of Veterinary Services’ Central Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Kabul’s Darulaman neighborhood. When disposing of a bird by either manner, wear gloves; do not touch the bird, its feathers, or its fluids with bare skin; and thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.

HAVANA (Reuters) - The highest ranking Chinese government official to visit Cuba in more than a year met with acting president Raul Castro on Friday, as part of a trip to strengthen ties between the communist allies, officials said.

Wu Guanzheng, a member of the Standing Committee of China’s Communist Party Politburo, arrived on Thursday for a four-day visit, but it was not clear whether he would also meet with ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who handed temporarily over power to his brother after surgery more than eight months ago.

Cuban officials insist Fidel Castro is well on the way to recovery and is gradually getting involved in leading the country again.

China last year became Cuba’s second biggest trading partner after Venezuela, with two-way trade doubling to almost $1.8 billion, mostly due to China’s exports of machinery, vehicles and consumer goods financed with Chinese credit.

Wu is the most senior official from China to visit Cuba since Lou Gan, another Politburo member, visited in December 2005 and Chinese President Hu Jintao in November 2004.

Wu praised Cuba for being the first country in Latin America to recognize China’s communist government, in 1960. Relations between Beijing and Havana took off after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Terrorist attack expected in Philippines

AUSTRALIA and the United States have warned of an impending major terrorist attack in the southern Philippines, where Al Qaeda-linked militants recently beheaded seven Christian hostages.

In an advisory to its citizens circulated late yesterday, the US embassy said the attack could take place anywhere on Mindanao, the country’s main southern island.

“The embassy has information that a terrorist group may be planning to carry out bombing attacks in central Mindanao over the next several days,” the travel notice said.

It asked Americans to “carefully consider plans” to visit the area, keep a low profile and avoid going to public places, including a national sports festival scheduled in Koronadal city from April 22 to 28.

Australia also warned its citizens against travelling to Mindanao and the adjoining islands of Basilan, Jolo and Tawi-Tawi, where Al Qaeda-linked militants are operating.

“Recent credible information indicates terrorists may be in the advanced stage of attack planning,” it said. “The attacks may be imminent and could occur at any time, anywhere in Mindanao.”
