Bush bypasses Senate to name ambassador
By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer 7 minutes ago
President Bush named Republican fundraiser Sam Fox as U.S. ambassador to Belgium on Wednesday, using a maneuver that allowed him to bypass Congress where Democrats had derailed Fox's nomination.
Democrats had denounced Fox for his 2004 donation to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. The group's TV ads, which claimed that Sen. John Kerry exaggerated his military record in Vietnam, were viewed as a major factor in the Massachusetts Democrat losing the election.
Recognizing Fox did not have the votes to obtain Senate confirmation, Bush withdrew the nomination last month. On Wednesday, with Congress out of town for a spring break, the president used his power to make recess appointments to put Fox in the job without Senate confirmation.
This means Fox can remain ambassador until the end of the next session of Congress, effectively through the end of the Bush presidency.
Bush also used his recess appointment authority to make Andrew Biggs deputy director of Social Security. The president's earlier nomination of Biggs, an outspoken advocate of partially privatizing the government's retirement program, was rejected by Senate Democrats in February.
Fox, a 77-year-old St. Louis businessman, gave $50,000 to the Swift Boat group. He is national chairman of the Jewish Republican Coalition and was dubbed a "ranger" by Bush's 2004 campaign for raising at least $200,000. He is founder and chairman of the Clayton, Mo.-based Harbour Group, which specializes in the takeover of manufacturing companies

I think all the people that didn’t get an up or down vote should be recess appointed now to all open judgeships. Payback for the vote. I wouldn’t give this Congress another shred of paper. Let’s have total stalemate the next 2 years because the only legislation passed would be crap anyway.
If the Senate won’t confirm who he wants, give the dems their worst nightmare instead!
Yeah, it would only last until the end of Congress’s term, but some of these posts only last that long anyways.
And it might teach the dims not to mess with W.....
“Either way, theyre laughably pathetic.”
There is nothing laughable about the state we are in. To dismiss them them as such is wrought with folly. Civil war will come to this country again someday and there is nothing funny about that.
I think that Fox has about ten years left in him, or so it seems. IAC, he can buy a tombstone with “Ambassador to Belgium” carved on it.
There are going to be a lot of panties in a knot.
I love it.
If you really want to put a grin on your face, go see what the DU’ers have to say about it.

I, for one, will say I’m sorry for not having the complete confidence in our President.....
I’m so glad that he is starting to get brave again, this is the reason I support him, but there for a while I was begining to wonder where he had gone...lol....
Welcome Back President Bush!
I very much respect your dedicated service to this country. I know that you were not drafted -- you volunteered. You went to Vietnam. You were wounded. Highly decorated. Senator, you're a hero. And there isnt anybody or anything that's going to take that away from you.
Enlisted in the Naval Reserves after his request for a third, or was it fourth, deferral was denied.
Went to Vietnam??? Three months does not constitute "going" to Vietnam.
Wounded??? ROTFLOL!!!
Hero??? The b-turd is a communist and a traitor to this country and has no constitutional right to be in the US SINate.
If he is highly decorated, it is/was a mistake and should be rectified ASAP.
Hmmmmm, he has only been in office 6 years 2.5 months.
OH NOES!!!!!!!!!!
HE CAVED AGAIN! THAT SPINELESS WIMP!!!!1111!!!!!eleventy!
Apologize for what? I’m just glad that he found them. That’s his job. To find his balls, and use them. Our job is to make sure he takes them out of his pocket every once in a while. Apologize? More like, “Its about time” is all you or anyone else is going to get.
“In his first six years in office, Bush made 167 recess appointments, 101 of which were to full-time positions, according to a January 2007 report by the Congressional Research Service. In his eight years in office, President Clinton made 139 recess appointments, 95 of where were to full-time positions.”
So, kerry is....an idiot. Well Nazi Pelosi shouldn’t have gone on her “Burka Tour 2007.”
Heh
Its pretty funny that Bush did it during Nancy Pelosi’s “Burka Tour 2007”. I guess she should have been back taking care of the dems bidness. She needs to take more trips, along with the disgraceful Murtha, Kerry, and Reid. More things would get done.
Maybe the president could sign an executive order outlawing the speaker from coming back. Have her go down to Aruba and fact-find that missing girl, or figure out the father of the late Anna Nicole’s baby, or find out just how those prisoners in guantanamo are doing. Or instead of visiting dictators, go visit the U.S. military guards that are guarding the human scum that the dictators create. That’s a novel concept. Actually go tell them they are doing a good job. Okay, I’m stretching the realm of possibility.
The President of The United States and Commander-in-Chief is with our troops in California.
He has made a committment to our troops to veto legislation regarding defunding etc.
Meanwhile, Nancy a (CAD)is on spring break in a country that sponors terrorism [Syria].
Nancy, You Calm Down.
