Hi, and this is my first posting—on the day of the Supreme Court victory no less!! First of all, I thank the webmaster and all of the FreeRepublic bloggers for their work and insight.
Ishmael. Don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but Ishmael could be a reference to Daniel Quinn’s book of the same name. A strange volume (narrated by a talking gorilla no less) containing Quinn’s theory of the start of modern civilization, actually a long essay of dissatisfaction with society as it exists today.

Ishmael, a book by Daniel Quinn? The theme seems to be a rant (by a gorilla) about the condition of civilization as compared to the ‘utopian’ version of society pre-ten thousand years ago.

Hi, trying to post this, as I may be the first to make this connection: Ishmael is the name of a book by Daniel Quinn, a weird tale narrated by a Gorilla consisting of a literate rant against present-day civilization. Can this be the reference made by Cho?

Largely overlooked in the Virginia Tech Massacre story is the fact that if “Cho” had decided not to carry out his rampage, he would have graduated next month with a degree in English Literature. How’s that for academic standards

“I’m still puzzled by the coincidental appearance of a Palestinian student taking video and audio of the actual massacre. In his own words, he ran towards the gunfire, not away from it, then became a media star for a day because of it.

Wow. First time I’ve heard of this.”

Tinfoil for sale. Tinfoil for sale. 2 for 1. Tinfoil for sale.

BTW, there’s another video now, not of the shots but of rescue carrying out victims, shot by two Swedes. And another from an Asian professor showing people running. Are they part of the plot as well?

Welcome to the group! There’s been a fairly extensive discussion of the Quinn book upthread a bit. Nevertheless, thanks for joining the ‘brainstorming’ session.

Take heart. While nopardons may not agree with you, Charles Krauthammer does.

Don’t be so quick on the no islamic possiblities. This guy probably didn’t think this all up on his own. He was coaxed or brain washed. He has Ishmael tatooed on him in addition to the return address on his envelope. If the truth is allowed to be known, we may see more than we bargained for.

True, sadly all too true.

You'd think that people who post to FR would have more common sense and "smarts", but obviously they don't.

I’ve been bringing that up to everyone I know. Read his “McBeef” play. And explain to me how this guy got to his senior year in college. It defies belief.

You said — “Twenty years ago, I was a freshman biology student at a major university and I switched my major because I couldn’t handle all the doom and gloom about Non-Sustainable Population Growth. The conclusion was always that we were doomed and it was all our own fault. Human population must decline according to the professor.”

Well, one of the things we should do with our kids is to teach them to *not believe* whatever the professors say. I mean, I did okay in college, basically because on all those things (like you’re saying) I simply did not believe what they were saying. However, I did learn to “study” it — like I would be studying some aberrant behavior. You learn what going on and the theories on this aberrant behavior (or thinking) that they’re teaching, but it doesn’t mean it’s valid.

It’s like this — with one thing I’m familiar with — non-Christian cults (for example). You learn what they think and exactly what their beliefs are, but you don’t “believe them.” In fact you may know their aberrant religion better than some of the members themselves — but that doesn’t make you a member.

That’s how kids need to go through college with this stuff — understand that it’s mostly aberrant thinking and behavior and learn *about it* — but don’t “learn it” in the sense of accepting it. Learn it as if you’re studying a serial killer and his thinking processes (that’s about what it’s like, I would say).

So, I did just fine — I learned it and I knew it was a bunch of garbage. I got the grade, I knew about their aberrant thinking and I was fine. I guess I was an “undercover agent”... :-)

Regards,
Star Traveler

I forgot to mention that the book that originally inspired the Friends of Ishmael - Ishmael by Daniel Quinn - won the Turner Tomorrow Award’s half-million-dollar first prize...

As in Ted Turner.

I still say the envelope looks like Ishmiel rather than Ishmael. Looks to me like there’s a dot over the fifth letter. If so, he picked a name that’s as nonsensical as the address.
