Would you be in favor of Amnesty if the borders were truly secure?

The defeat of the amnesty bill is indeed a great day for America. The noble concept of a "Government by the people, for the people" has worked exactly the way our founding fathers intended. Our public serpents have heard the voice of their constituents and acted according to their wishes by defeating this train wreck of a bill.

In the absence of an actual intellectual argument, proponents of amnesty relied on the lowest common denominator of civil public discourse...when you have no facts to back you up, just call your opponent names like doodyhead, racist, bigot, redneck or nativist.

Apparently the elitist left wingers who were eager for new Democratic voters and the elitist Wall Street Journal right wingers who were frothing at the mouth at the idea of a cheap labor pool were shocked. They were used to having their way while the unwashed masses were busy paying attention to Paris Hilton, American Idol or Anna Nicole Smith.

Americans told them in no uncertain terms: We are not stupid. We are performing our civic duty by paying attention to our government. The message is so simple that even a retard can understand it...PROVE TO US THAT YOU CAN ENFORCE THE EXISTING LAWS BEFORE PASSING NEW LAWS THAT YOU CAN'T POSSIBLY ENFORCE.

They claimed that "we haven't read the bill and don't understand it. There are too many moving parts." No. We've read the bill. They haven't. Sure there were some good parts: ending chain migration, increasing the number of visas available for highly skilled employees.

This is certainly not over.

Speaking strictly for myself, I have nothing personally against people trying to come to America to better their lives. Besides the felony crime of breaking into a sovereign nation illegally, the only other "crime" many of these illegals have committed is mowing our lawn, landscaping our yard and picking our fruit. We don't hate anyone.

My parents were first generation LEGAL immigrants. Many of your parents, grandparents and great grandparents came here for the same reason.

We all understand that. What people like Bob Menendez and Mel Martinez don't understand is that when people came here at the turn of the last century there was no welfare state. Come one, come all. If you fail, don't look to the Gubmint to bail you out and provide social services at the taxpayers expense. We are in a different world.

So I am curious and our elected public serpents who were shocked by the outcry from their constituents are too. President Bush is a "lame duck" supposedly. He certainly won't accomplish any new legislative initiatives. However, he still has the power as President to see to it that existing laws are enforced. That means build the fence that was authorized and funded in October of 2006.

Then come back to us and talk about Comprehensive Immigration Reform. If the border were truly secure, would you be in favor of a similar bill?

“They can never be legal voting citizens...”

If we had a complete border fence, adequately patrolled and maintained, and all illegal immigration had effectively ended, I would have no problem with some sort of amnesty program that allowed the illegal immigrants already in this country to gain permanent residency and legal citizenship in the same manner as legal immigrants, as long as the legal applicants took precedence in the process. I’d include some provision that illegal immigrants who took part in this amnesty would forfeit the right to bring over any relatives for at least 10 years after they gained citizenship.

Amnesty means these folks get to be legal:

Last February, federal agents removed box after box from Haque’s accounting business, Ahbrar CPA, on Lorain Avenue in Cleveland. The seizure of those documents, investigators say, are what lead to the new charges. Haque and the 13 others are charged with creating false documentation for immigration purposes, money laundering, falsifying payroll records, filing false tax returns, mail and wire fraud and more. Four of those charged Wednesday, including Haque, were also charged last April. He along with his wife, brother and a long list of employees from the Cleveland area are now part of that growing list facing charges.

Odd that you think that not providing amnesty to 12 million illegal aliens is a buzzsaw. Who are you?

Who am I?

I'm Batman!

PS: You are mixing and matching comments from two separate posts. I am not in favor of amnesty.

The word Amnesty should be burned at the stake. NEVER EVER ALLOW IT.

Legal immigration is the way to go. Also, we have guest worker programs that should be for workers of the world not just Mexico. There are about 4 billion poor people who would love the opportunity of coming here to earn a decent living and if given the opportunity would probable play by the rules.l

HAd the U.N. been worth a d@mn we would have been educating and teaching poor countries how to survive, feed and clothe themselves. Instead, money went to two-bit dictators for favors for votes in the U.N.

Look what a mess the UK is in today due to immigration legal or otherwise.

It’s like asking a homeowner to forgive a criminal trespasser who broke into their home because they were poor.

It's more like the dim-witted caretaker opened the front gate while the owner was away, and trespassers entered, tentatively at first. They knew they did not have permission, but no one did anything about it, and they began to feel more at home, even doing little chores around the place. Until one day when the owners returned, and reclaimed their rights.

They are not thieves, and were in a sense lured in by the belief that the powers that be really wanted them, but they were wrong, because in this country, the powers that be are not on Wall Street or on Capitol Hill, but reside in our people. Now the owners have returned.

I would have a problem with it. Allowing them to stay here until such a time as they have gained permanent residency is rewarding them for breaking the law.

While the concept might seem "fair" I think the entire question is a moot point because the border will not be secured.

As stated up at post #15: "Even the Iron Curtain couldn't secure a border, and they were trying a lot harder than we ever would"

It just ain't gonna happen, so hold the line. There will be time enough for counting, when the dealing's done.

In the end, we will have to accept some kind of amnesty. I do not believe the American people have the heart to deport all those who came here illegally, even if our government ever developed the will to do so...which is highly unlikely.

IF the borders were secure, and we had an legal immigration/guest worker program that worked, I could accept giving legal status to the people who came here illegally on a case by case basis. I would not like it, but I could accept it.

It is important to remember that we won this battle because we were on the same side with the majority of the American people. Our Senators, President, and the MKM can go on and on saying this bill was defeated by a ‘tiny but vocal’ minority...but that is not the case. There were powerful forces pressuring the Senators to pass this bill. They would not have voted against it unless they were convinced that a sizable majority of the people were against the bill.

I think we are going to have to pick our battles. We can win the one on border security. We can push hard to end illegal immigration. But we are not going to beat the ‘Dream’ Act...because most people believe that children are responsible for their parent’s decision to live illegally in the U.S.

Oh, they KNOW it, they just IGNORE it.

I marvel that my illiterate Grandfathers [one of 7 with another 6 born in the US] and one with 5 came to this country and made a life for their families. They were PEASANTS from Sicily and despite the prejudices of the time they thrived and made a good life for their families without GOVERNMENT handouts.

We will never see the likes of that generation again in this pampered, spoiled and selfish society.

Explain first why you think that receiving a bunch of responses that indicate that people here do not favor amnesty for the 12-20 million who are here now, you claim you have run into a buzzsaw? Your response indicates to me that people are reacting too strongly, emotionally, and not rationally, not like a hero in an Eric Arthur Blair novel.

That, if true, indicates to me that someone has read an author, but not understood him.
